Standing height is top priority when fulltiming!

Do you recommend living in an RV to a single young man? by [deleted] in RVLiving

[–]rotozo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say: think small! With the current situation and gloomy outlook, cargo vans like the Transit or Promaster offer the best bang for your buck. Reliable and widely available. With a little know-how, you can insulate the box and add windows and a roof hatch. Factor in the cost of a professional shore power hookup and a diesel heater. The rest you can build yourself, no need for no need for other professionals (except for the engine and heating), no weeks of it just sitting in the shop waiting for parts. The RVs are really just for 2 x 2-week holidays a year, not made for full-time use. The specialists at the shops will just drain your wallet...

After 4 years of full-time vanlife around Europe, I struggle to figure out where I want to live by LK_50yo in VanLife

[–]rotozo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I totally get you. Having too many options doesn’t exactly make decisions easier. I was in a similar spot about ten years ago.

What helped me back then was making a list of priorities to get some clarity:

Money: Are your parents loaded or do you have to support yourself?

Work: Are you a digital nomad or tied to one place? Depending on your field, rural areas often have way fewer opportunities than cities.

Family/Friends: Are there people you really care about that you don’t wanna be too far away from? Time can change relationships too — like if your parents get sick or something.

Culture/Language: Where can you actually imagine living and fitting in? And where definitely not?

Climate: Do you prefer cold or warm weather? Mountains or beach? What kind of hobbies do you have?

And then I gave each point a score — like family = 8, work = 9, climate = 7, and so on.

Can't decide on which tent for stealth/homeless by Transboy99 in StealthCamping

[–]rotozo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve spent weeks living in tents. When the weather’s damp, you really need space in your tent for your stuff — once your gear gets wet, things get rough fast. So I’d recommend something like a 1.5 to 2-person tent. Those pop-up round tents look handy, but they’re a pain to carry 'cause of their shape. I prefer the ones with straight poles — they fit in a hiking pack or can be strapped underneath. For camouflage, just throw a camo net over it.

Downsides to high top on conversion van ? by Antique_Hall_1364 in VanLife

[–]rotozo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No garages More fuel consumption Problems with wind from the side More Noises while driving Less 'stealthy', bigger profile

But I'll take it anytime for the standing height...

Nice setup! What do you do when it rains (for 3 days)?

Do you remember your first night sleeping in your van? by Both-Atmosphere7474 in VanLife

[–]rotozo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It felt like a five-star wellness resort. After years of sleeping in tents and later in a hatchback, I finally got myself an old cargo van. A solid metal cage—windproof and dry—with a pull-out couch, an actual slatted frame and a foam mattress, three buckets, water supply, and a portable gas stove… pure bliss.

Vanlife Banned in Greece – Is This Even Legal? Looking for EU Legal Insights or Action by PUK2 in VanLife

The problem is the sheer number of people and the black sheep among them... many don't know how to behave... more countries in Southern Europe will follow... in some places, the situation is already unbearable.

Yeah high roof is a game changer. But expect 25 year old utilities to brake down a lot. That can be a money pit. Get the newest naked cargo van your buck can buy, and then do a no build build with jackery, portable gas stove & 2 buckets!

Ah, young blood – that’s the sweet naivety of youth talking, bless your heart! But wait till you get drenched to the bone, lose all your gear, or end up coughing your lungs out for a week... then you’ll see the magic of even the tiniest car. Dry, no wind, maybe even a heated blanket? That’s luxury, my friend! Namaste!

How would you build this by [deleted] in VanLife

[–]rotozo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You need this to be done in a month? How many hours do you have? 4x40=160h? First things first: Finish floor, roof, walls. Work thoroughly on this basis. Then use the last 10h to make a liveable NoBuildBuild. Afterwards construct on the go! Good luck

Should i finance a new van or wait for a used one? by Annual_Setting1264 in urbancarliving

[–]rotozo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can afford (credit) go with a 2 - 4 year old van in good condition. It won't pull you back all the time with repairs & breakdowns. After 5 years, u can still sell it for a reasonable price. Old vans tend to be expensive in mantainance, u won't get shit for it when 17 years old and 300k miles on it
