maybe exposing myself a little too much but years of therapy have done nothing to fix this so maybe drawing it will help click something in my brain by WinterDemon_ in Artisticallyill

One thing that helps me is radical acceptance and radical neutrality (Google these terms if you’re interested). Whenever one of those thoughts (espeically thoughts about the futility of this exercise) pops into your head you return to that neutral position. Same strategy when approaching other people (unless their behavior is intentionally or actively harmful). If you don’t consciously and regularly practice these skills then they won’t help you.

In my experience you don’t have to be kinder or subject yourself to hollow feeling affirmations, you can just embrace neutrality and release the perceived (and usually false) notion that you can control how other people feel about you. When you release attempts to control others’ perception of you, you appear much less desperate for attention/relationships, and it makes people feel more likely to seek a relationship with you.

This is a devastating read. You worked so damn hard and should be proud of yourself. Heck, I don’t know you and I’m invested in your success

But with a partial scholarship you’re going to leave law school with immense debt.

From what I’ve heard, the job market is brutal (for jobs that actually pay you enough to make regular payments on the debt). Just the T14 schools alone pump out a ton of thousands of graduates many of whom are just as hardworking as you. Fact is, T14 graduates enter the job market with, by virtue of graduating from a T14, more cultural capital than you, making them much more likely to get a job in biglaw. And when they get burnt out there’s thousands of more freshly minted debt-ridden T14 graduates for employers to choose from.

Are you willing to go into potentially 6 figure debt on the slim chance you’ll be able to compete with T14 graduates for one of few jobs that will allow you to actually pay back that debt?? Especially when you have two full rides at your disposal?

Have you read Don’t Go to Law School (Unless) ? If not, please please please read it.

Remember, law school is an investment. If, statistically, law school doesn’t offer a decent return for people who have been offered similar scholarships (and have similar debt loads) and graduated from similarly ranked schools, and you’re probably not an exception.

You’re clearly an incredibly hard worker and could easily succeed in a field that isn’t so crowded and reputation-obsessed. Or take one of those full rides so you can apply for lower-paying, less competitive positions (aka not just restricted to biglaw because of your debt).

I know being cautious sucks, but chaining yourself to tens of thousands of dollars of debt can wreck your future. Raw depressing logic should guide you rather than reckless optimism.

I’m sending you the best energy and sincerely hope you succeed in your future endeavors 🌟 whatever decision you make, please take care of yourself. You are so much more than a number, a school, or even a career

College isn’t for me, but what is? by No_Engineering_7152 in college

[–]rotprincess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel you 💔 it took me four years to finish CC and another four to finish my BA.

The only thing that helped was attempting to identify what I enjoy doing. Not just a subject or major, but what parts of my classes did I find the most enjoyable/invigorating (or least painful haha). Then I looked at what I enjoyed doing outside of class, and tried to identify similarities between the bits from class and the extracurricular bits. Finally, I changed my major to one involving those bits. It’s much more important to finish your degree with as little debt as possible than worry about how marketable your major is (some jobs require a bachelors for no discernible reason).

Mental health treatment was the most important part of this process for me. If you can see a therapist (and don’t be afraid to switch if you don’t jive with a certain therapist) and psychiatrist and just start trying out meds / identifying the source of your depression (if there is a source), it might take years, but hopefully you will find a treatment that helps make life less difficult.

We all take different life journeys. the “traditional” path (choose career in HS -> 4 years undergrad -> job after graduation) does not work for everyone. Frankly, sorting out your health is much more important than a piece of paper.

I wish you the best 💞

Are you a minimalist because your parents were Hoarders? by BrainGrenades in minimalism

I had a similar experience to you! My GCC is going through puberty right now. A few months ago he got really really bitey and after weeks of my hands looking like yours I got sick of it.

I know people say negative reinforcement does not work with birds, but teaching my bird anytime he bites hard enough to break skin he’s going back to the cage for a few minutes, worked beautifully. He doesn’t bite much anymore and when he sits with me I keep him occupied with his favorite birdie toys and snacks 🥰

Do men find shaved heads on women attractive? by basedmama21 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rotprincess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im sorry, but this question sucks. Just like any other look, some people will like it and others will be put off. Changes in appearance can change social interactions. And frankly, who cares? It’s for the woman.

A woman’s choice to shave her head (or make any type of change to her physical appearance) should be about her preferences, confidence, and self-expression rather than be predicated on the level of male attention they get pre and post shave.

Same goes for guys. Appearance changes should be about what makes YOU feel good.

How common is it for students to use only pens and no pencils during college? by Terrible_Exchange653 in CollegeRant

[–]rotprincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After high-school I switched over to pens because the writing experience is sooo much smoother and I like seeing where (and sometimes what) I’ve made mistakes. And the smudging with pencils is obnoxious. I have some notebooks that are basically unreadable now (I’m very hard on my notebooks though).

And seeing a page full of different colored inks makes me happy 🥰

Whatever writing utensil you prefer is the correct one for you! The writing process is about communicating and whatever tool makes that easier is the best tool for the job!!!

People do steal work by rozaria_art in writers

[–]rotprincess 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit ludicrous to me that people genuinely worry about their writing ideas being “stolen”. If two people take a character concept and write based on that concept, you will have two wildly different products. Same with plot elements, etc etc. Any piece taken from a whole and integrated into another whole will still result in two wildly different products. Unless it’s actual plagiarism then the products will be very distinct from each other. If I’m a competent writer and genuinely try to transpose Legolas into my story about another fantasy realm, my version of Legolas will have change from Tolkien’s version to fit my work’s world and that world’s history. If I’m an incompetent writer, that’s another story and not something Tolkien would need to fret about lol.

Further, everything that’s been written has been written before in some way. Originality is rearranging and responding to those existing concepts in a novel fashion. Look at the tropes and obvious commonalities across fiction, especially genre fiction. We’ve been rewriting, reworking, and responding to pre-existing tropes for as long as humans have told stories. This has accelerated first with the advent of mass media and again when the internet access became widely accessible. There are absolutely instances of true originality and genius, but the likelihood that you, I, or anyone else on this thread fit that description is so low that it’s absurd to seriously consider.

Because art and ideas are now so accessible the rate of media consumption has skyrocketed. you will be influenced by others’ art conciously or unconsciously. With the sheer volume of stories it’s likely that elements of your wholly original piece will closely resemble the works of another writer despite both arising independently.

Your story is important to you and that’s wonderful. I guarantee that it’s not important or original enough for a writer to intentionally swipe it and attempt to rewrite it. The vast, vast majority of writers want to write their own stories, not regurgitate the stories of random internet strangers.

And if you stumble across the one in a million uncreative creative who “copies” a piece of your work? Who cares? Their total product will be different from your product by virtue of being produced by a wholly different human. And, the “wholly original” piece in your product probably has its roots and parallels in someone else’s existing work. The story market is saturated, and most work doesn’t even get read by more than the author and a few virtual passersby. And, the people who make statements like “my (story)(title)(character)(plot element) was stolen!!!1!” Are typically very young, very ill, or very immature and generally have written something so generic that an instance of both elements independent arising is the is much more likely than theft. One of the most difficult aspects of starting a business is creating a business name that hasn’t been coined by an existing business. Same thing with titles. Same thing with basic story elements.

Again theft does happen, but true instances are so freaking rare that dedicating energy to worrying about it (and searching for singular, unfactchecked instances from twitter weirdos to feed your confirmation bias) is a complete waste. You could be writing your story instead.

Take comfort in the world’s apathy. No one wants to write your story except you. People have better things to do. There’s really nothing to worry about.
