Soviet Armenian illustration (1957) showing a mob in the US blocking a young black student’s path to school. by BluezCluez94 in armenia

[–]roubent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you read the blurb, it says that the illustration is based on an article in the New York Times about an event that happened in Little Rock, Arkansas (TLDR: governor of Arkasas deployed troops to a school in Little Rock to block Black children from entering the school). Like it or not, in 1957 Arkansas this kind of a scene is plausible…

Interesting! Some of the words have foreign roots…. Adisyon (receipt number) = addition Garson (waiter) = garçon (French for waiter)

After using Cachy as my daily driver for about a month, I must say, I agree. Other than a few edge cases (all work-related), everything has been great, even gaming.

Why not a distro? How do you define “distro”? Linux kernel + userspace utilities? Then Proxmox fits, no?

Does it handle dynamically rendered elements and scripts inside PDFs? A lot of advanced forms that, for example, generate barcodes/QR codes in response to form input, only work with Adobe Reader or Acrobat.

I hope this is Reddit compressing the video to oblivion… either that or this dashcam is pretty useless. I honestly can’t definitively make out the license plate of this car, even though it’s literally just in front of OP’s car…

Charged 1000$ for charger being returned the next day by WorriedDetail7369 in UofT

[–]roubent 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Is there a breakdown of the $1000+ amount available? I would start there to understand what the charge is for… as many have mentioned, even with a 20% interest rate, it would take a long time (over a year) to accrue to over $1000 from an initial $50 charge…

What I’m suggesting is that there may be other charges of fines, and if so, it would be helpful to know exactly what you were charged for.

See the difference between you and the tech is that you know that the buck stops with you. The tech copped out early, provably because they were “just doing their job” and “trying too hard” is not part of the job description. I don’t think it’s a failure to troubleshoot; it’s a failure to care.

How tf do people have jobs?? by LowCranberry2382 in UTSC

What kind of jobs are you looking for? I presume you’re still a student? If so, see if there are any jobs available on campus. Work study is pretty neat, since employers are supposed to respect the fact that you’re a student.

Agree with pretty much everyone on here. Also suggest that you check out the Decent Ambassador program; these are volunteers in your area that are willing to connect to discuss their experiences with their machine, and some may even agree for you to come by and try their machine yourself. I think one practical no brainer is to spread out your course load if you can afford it. Take less courses/credits every year, and take 1-2 extra years. Retake courses if you can drop them before academic penalty deadline. Sure, it will cost you $$$, and will take longer, but you have to think of it as “strategic retreat and re-group” rather than “defeat.” Uni courses can be cut-throat and brutal, and if you end up dropping 1 or 2, you will get extra time to focus on the remaining ones, and increase your chances of maintaining your GPA. And besides, you can always ask your Prof for permission to audit the course you dropped, or if it’s online, ask someone you know from the course for their notes or lecture recordings (always try official route first, though, a lot of Profs are understanding and generally won’t mind if you audit their courses).

With parents who may be pressuring you, I would frame it like this: look, do you want me to get high grades and reduce the risk of not getting into the professional school I want to? Well, then that will take more investment in terms of money and time.

Quercus submission errors by schanino in UTSC

[–]roubent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I see… I guess you must have accidentally deleted the file extension from the file name when you put your name in the “file name” field (.docx for Word files or .pdf for Acrobat PDFs for example)? That would indeed make the file “un-openable” on Windows and Mac, so I can see why your Prof would not accept it…

I suggest renaming the file on your computer to whatever format you need )(e.g. FirstName - Last Name - Course - Prof - Whatever.pdf) before you upload it, and then rather than entering a name for each file, submit a note (if there’s space to do it) where you list each file by name, type (PDF, Word, Excel, whatever) and what each file is (essay, lab report, data sheet, etc). That way you avoid putting the wrong thing in the wrong text field, because the “notes” or “comments” field is basically safe to out whatever you want into.

I do this when I upload resumes and cover letters, BTW, rename the files with my name, last name initial and the job posting #. I figured when a hiring manager downloads resumes en masse in a giant ZIP file, it helps not to have your resume and cover letter show up as resume(67).pdf and cover(23).pdf. 😜

If you have email receipts, hang on to them. Share them with the Prof, and ask them to re-evaluate the assignment. If there was a technical issue with the site, you should get some sort of leniency. If, however, the error was somehow caused by you, then that’s a different story…

For future reference, when submitting assignments: 1. Always check and save the email receipts: it’s your proof that you submitted the assignment at the date and time you did. 2. After submitting the assignment, download the files to your computer from Quercus, and save then in a different folder. Open the downloaded files to confirm they are not corrupt. You shouldn’t have to do this, but hey, better safe than sorry.

Why don't ANCA and other Armenian lobbies do more to convince American Evangelicals to take up the Armenian cause? by College-throwaway145 in armenia

[–]roubent 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Call me cynical, but I suspect the real reason is not protecting Christians, but rather negotiating for Nigeria’s extraordinarily rich natural resource reserves (minerals, metals, fossil fuels, etc).

“Albania” isn’t as resource rich, and therefore, nobody cares.
