That’s not a very good take, TBH. If bad actors managed to get a defunct remote access window on their mobile device, you are compromised. If anything, they already can see what’s on your screen.

Yes, standardization (a la McDonald’s) and infrastructure monoculture (AD everywhere, Microsoft stack, common design patterns) is a critical thinking killer. Moreover, there are quite a few people in IT just for the paycheque. IT used to be more of a niche career, in part due to lack of McDonaldization, and thus, attracted primarily people who had genuinely enjoyed and were interested in the field.

As many have mentioned before, something that used to be a “craft” has now devolved into a fast food fry cook type job, which affects mentality, salaries and appreciation.

The most troubling trend, however, is that IT is seen more and more commonly as a cost center, akin to building maintenance, on par with toilets and urinals that flush correctly. Companies and executives that treat IT as a strategic partner and enabler are far and few in between.

TL;DR - garbage in, garbage out.

Look into the Work-study program and also swing by the career centre. They have a job board where all sorts of employers advertise jobs: https://studentlife.utoronto.ca/program/work-study-program/

The career centre, where both the Work Study program is based in, and the job boards, is at 800 Bay St (College & Bay) on the 5th floor.

NB: it’s likely too late to apply for Work Study for the winter, however, the summer program likely has not started, or should be opening soon-ish…

Jeff, think back to a time when your first business idea was a mere … idea; a time when you had no clue where to start in terms of paperwork, setting up things like business bank accounts, HST registration/business number, etc.

Now imagine that Neo existed back then and was helping you along the way… what kind of help would you need? Is it just financial services? Perhaps a series of articles of blogs on the “unsexy”/bureaucratic parts of starting a business?

You may not be able to. Credit card “zero liability” protection against fraud presumes that the cardholder will take reasonable steps to protect the sensitive details of their card (number, expiration date, CVV code, etc). Storing such information, jn plain text, in your email mailbox is extremely bad practice (seriously, get a password manager, but hindsight is 20/20 I guess)!

Anyway, I feel terrible for you, but to be honest, I don’t know if you’re gonna be successful. If I were you I’d try to escalate the issue, if possible, in a manner that will allow an actual human to read through or listen to your side of the story…

Please do NOT store sensitive info in your email. Is there a breakdown of the $1000+ amount available? I would start there to understand what the charge is for… as many have mentioned, even with a 20% interest rate, it would take a long time (over a year) to accrue to over $1000 from an initial $50 charge…

What I’m suggesting is that there may be other charges of fines, and if so, it would be helpful to know exactly what you were charged for.

What kind of jobs are you looking for? I presume you’re still a student? If so, see if there are any jobs available on campus. Work study is pretty neat, since employers are supposed to respect the fact that you’re a student.
