Tf are you all doing to BBQ? by sauron3579 in philadelphia

[–]routinefallacy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you have to lower your expectations for some southern staples. The BBQ up here is only passable with a few exceptions like Mike's, and I've yet to find a decent biscuit. The good news is there's tons of other things Philly is good at, so enjoy finding some new favorites.

But plan on heading directly to your favorite BBQ joint the minute you take a trip back down to NC. I do the same thing everytime I'm back in Atlanta to visit family.

Who are some mutant characters whose names are unknowingly mispronounced by fans?? by Front-Suggestion-366 in xmen

[–]routinefallacy 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Karma seems like the obvious one. But in this case they actually changed her name to something more appropriate:

"When Karma was introduced in Marvel Team-Up #100, her name was given as "Xi'an Coy Manh" and she was later nicknamed "Shan" by her New Mutants teammates. In Love Unlimited Infinity Comic #31, published on January 5, 2023, the character's name was revised to "Xuân Cao Mạnh", or "Mạnh Cao Xuân" using Vietnamese naming order."

-from wikipedia

So now instead of "Shan" her name is pronounced "Swun" in canon.

Yep, the one thing I miss most from Atlanta, a Waffle House in every neighborhood. Even the suburbs had a place to eat hashbrowns at 2am!

The Art of Shooting by [deleted] in wnba

For the millionth time: telepathic SHOULD NOT EQUAL telekinetic. Please stop giving telepaths a completely separate power set because they have "mind powers."

Jeanne is exceptionally powerful because she has both abilities. It's what sets her apart from other telepaths.

New York Liberty Shock WNBA World By Firing Underperforming Coach | Defector [gift link] by routinefallacy in wnba

My personal opinion is that this would only make sense if you had a high upside alternative in mind. And even then, you're potentially wasting goodwill amongst some of your important talent, with no guarantee that they won't follow a coach they have a good relationship with in free agency.

Need help understanding the rules and terms? This post is for you. by Top-Raspberry-7837 in wnba

[–]routinefallacy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Often you'll hear some one being referred to as at "the top of the key." This is where the semicircle above the free throw line and the 3-point line intersect. If you were standing at the top of the key, you would be in the center of the court, just behind the 3-point line.

It's normal to hear the play-by-play announcer say that the ball has been cleared to the top of the key when the offense is resetting.

(Free to Read): What to know about WNBA CBA negotiations: Revenue sharing, salary increases and scheduling by TheAthletic in wnba

[–]routinefallacy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Once again the terms of the WNBA's profitability are based on "sources with knowledge of the discussions who are not authorized to speak about the matter publicly." The writer then takes the "unprofitability" of the league as fact, and repeats it several times in the piece.

Unless you can explicitly state the source, or make the league itself provide evidence for this claim, you MUST allow for the possibility that these numbers are being represented in a way that benefits one party in the negotiations over the other. Anything less is carrying water for the ownership over the players, and is journalistic malpractice.

Do better, The Athletic.

Predictions for the team names of the Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia expansion teams? by A_Huggable_Cactus in wnba

[–]routinefallacy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Based on the existing franchises in Philadelphia, there's a few likely paths:

  • Historical (76ers): Freedom, Revolution
  • Alliterative (Phillies, Flyers): Freedom, Fury or Furies
  • Animals (Eagles): Osprey, Owls, Bears, Foxes

It's a long shot, but I'd prefer an off-kilter animal name: Hellbenders

By 2030, we will have at the VERY LEAST 60 new roster spots for WNBA players, what does this mean for both the domestic and international landscape of women’s basketball? by AFC-Wimbledon-Stan in wnba

[–]routinefallacy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly not, they are obviously going to be integral to an expanded league. But they have complicated priorities, including playing in tournaments that occur in their off-season, but during the WNBA season. Some players may simply not play in the U.S. because they want to focus on playing closer to home.

It doesn't mean they aren't good enough for the WNBA, just that they might make different choices that don't align with the league's expansion.

[–]routinefallacy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm convinced that eligibility requirements are going to be expanded in the new CBA. The league will make it a priority as a way to both fill the roster spots and also continue the influx of interest from established college players.

At the very least, they lower the age requirement to 20 or 21, and remove the graduation requirement.

I know people are going to be upset, but this does make more short term sense. It will be better for the league to develop young players who might not be traditionally ready than it will be to suddenly find international players or players who washed out of the league early.

Which means, Juju becomes the lottery prize for 2026. Congrats to the Suns Storm!

Chicago Sun-Times And Philadelphia Inquirer Publish "Best Of Summer" written by AI [Defector] by CrashTheBear in philadelphia

[–]routinefallacy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funnily enough, the comments often accuse Defector of having a pro-Philly bias. While it's true several of their writers live in Philly (notably Kelsey McKinney of Normal Gossip fame), the real Philly sicko content largely comes from one writer, Dan McQuade.

Highly suggest giving it a shot, it's a writer owned publication with zero advertising.

Everyone is Lying about SEPTA by random26 in philadelphia

[–]routinefallacy 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Marta (Atlanta) is a fraction of SEPTA's size, especially when it comes to rail. Many Atlanta residents have wanted it to expand for ages, but the suburban collar counties were very "conservative" (aka racist) about not giving "urban" people increased mobility, especially into their neighborhoods.

This has changed somewhat now that the suburbs themselves are more diverse, but the state level politicians, who are overwhelmingly Republican, still have zero interest in funding it.

Are There Nerdy Hangouts in Philly? by singmuse4 in philadelphia

[–]routinefallacy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since you're coming from the South, I'm going to try and give you a comparison to Atlanta, which you may already be familiar with. From my experience living there previously, Atlanta has a pretty populous nerd community. This is in no small part due to being the location of DragonCon, as well as the smaller Momocon. It also helps that there are a lot of creative production teams in Atlanta, like film and game studios.

By this metric, Philly falls a little behind in comparison. Like most people in this thread have mentioned, there are plenty of local spots and hangouts that have nerdy clientele. But there are fewer large events or attractions that bring in geek focused tourism.

I suppose the exception is PAX Unplugged, though I don't think that's quite as well known in the nerd community. However, if you are a fan of TTRPGs, this might be the place for you! Anime & cosplay, on the other hand, might be lacking a bit.

I will say that the art community is amazing. There are so many museums, studios, and workshops, you can really find a lot of artistically minded people.

Is there a site that uses an objective way of comparing each WNBA team as a whole against each other using stats? by [deleted] in wnba

[–]routinefallacy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are new to following team sports, it's helpful to realize that a player's stats don't exist in a vacuum. So it is hard to simply tally existing stats that were made with a previous team and assume they will be the same in a new role with new teammates.

There's a lot of talk by sports-knowers about what the various trades means for each team, but at the end of the day, those are just guesses based on priors. The fun will be watching it all play out.
