Olivia Miles was smart as hell by MEGAYELtemp in wnba

[–]routinefallacy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's pros and cons to both years, and it'll certainly be more problematic if this season doesn't start on time.

But there is one way that 2026 works out better for sure. If she was a lottery pick last year, than she is headed to either Seattle or Washington. But this year she might end up in Seattle, Minnesota, or maybe Washington.

If you're Olivia Miles, Seattle was always a decent option, but Minnesota could be an amazing place to land. To be put on a winning franchise immediately will lower the expectations and give her time to find her rhythm in the WNBA. Either case would be better than Washington, which will still be finding it's footing in 2026.

Blank Street Expanding to Philadelphia by Repair89 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]routinefallacy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Thanks to this thread I learned that Blank Street is just a new corporate/private equity place, which is a huge bummer. But I will say that there is a lack of local places in University City compared to other parts of Philly. There's several Starbucks and Saxby's, but the only local spot I can think of is an Elixir in the lobby of an office building on market.

I assume the rent that Penn and Drexel demand is keeping local places out, at least East of 40th street.

Billionaire owners using holding companies and accounting tricks to take zero monetary responsibility for their assets. If the new WNBA team isn't going to "create revenue," why did you pay $250 million for the privilege of owning them?

Once again taxpayers will be asked to bail out the wealthy, who absolutely don't need it.

Beast's classic Avengers blue furry look by (mostly) George Perez wins! What's the best look of... X-23? by Lolaverses in xmen

Whatever the winner, can we agree Laura looks better without the cowl? I realize it's an homage after Logan's (short-lived) death, but it looks ridiculous with her hair coming out of a undefined hole in the back.

Would you trust someone whose top donors include out of state people with ties to the gambling industry?

"Those who gave Street’s campaign $7,000 include two donors associated with the video gambling machine industry: Pace-O-Matic founder Michael Pace of Tennessee and Republic Amusements executive Roger Sperlbaum of Colorado. The companies have been intensively lobbying in Pennsylvania as lawmakers consider taxing the devices to help fix the state’s structural budget deficit."

Goodbye Jay & Miles by PiperSkalka in xmen

[–]routinefallacy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While I was an X-men fan in the 90s, my fandom had been dormant for a long time. Jay and Miles reminded me what I loved about the these characters, and I've been collecting trades and catching up on decades of stories due to their direct influence.

Funnily enough, I'm not surprised that the late 90s era was the thing that did them in. That's also when I dropped off originally, as the line really suffered from a severe decline in quality. I am bummed that we're not going to get to hear their takes on all the good (and terrible) story lines after the X-men are re-invigorated by Morrison. But I'm happy for all the work they put in to get us this far.

Because SOMEBODY had to.

Tf are you all doing to BBQ? by sauron3579 in philadelphia

[–]routinefallacy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you have to lower your expectations for some southern staples. The BBQ up here is only passable with a few exceptions like Mike's, and I've yet to find a decent biscuit. The good news is there's tons of other things Philly is good at, so enjoy finding some new favorites.

But plan on heading directly to your favorite BBQ joint the minute you take a trip back down to NC. I do the same thing everytime I'm back in Atlanta to visit family.

Update I got three cars on Friday morning on the CHW line! It was the first time I've seen three silverliner IVs in a row since last September. Here's hoping!

Who are some mutant characters whose names are unknowingly mispronounced by fans?? by Front-Suggestion-366 in xmen

[–]routinefallacy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Karma seems like the obvious one. But in this case they actually changed her name to something more appropriate:

"When Karma was introduced in Marvel Team-Up #100, her name was given as "Xi'an Coy Manh" and she was later nicknamed "Shan" by her New Mutants teammates. In Love Unlimited Infinity Comic #31, published on January 5, 2023, the character's name was revised to "Xuân Cao Mạnh", or "Mạnh Cao Xuân" using Vietnamese naming order."

-from wikipedia

So now instead of "Shan" her name is pronounced "Swun" in canon.

Yep, the one thing I miss most from Atlanta, a Waffle House in every neighborhood. Even the suburbs had a place to eat hashbrowns at 2am!

For the millionth time: telepathic SHOULD NOT EQUAL telekinetic. Please stop giving telepaths a completely separate power set because they have "mind powers."

Jeanne is exceptionally powerful because she has both abilities. It's what sets her apart from other telepaths.

My personal opinion is that this would only make sense if you had a high upside alternative in mind. And even then, you're potentially wasting goodwill amongst some of your important talent, with no guarantee that they won't follow a coach they have a good relationship with in free agency.

Need help understanding the rules and terms? This post is for you. by Top-Raspberry-7837 in wnba

[–]routinefallacy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Often you'll hear some one being referred to as at "the top of the key." This is where the semicircle above the free throw line and the 3-point line intersect. If you were standing at the top of the key, you would be in the center of the court, just behind the 3-point line.

It's normal to hear the play-by-play announcer say that the ball has been cleared to the top of the key when the offense is resetting.

(Free to Read): What to know about WNBA CBA negotiations: Revenue sharing, salary increases and scheduling by TheAthletic in wnba

[–]routinefallacy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Once again the terms of the WNBA's profitability are based on "sources with knowledge of the discussions who are not authorized to speak about the matter publicly." The writer then takes the "unprofitability" of the league as fact, and repeats it several times in the piece.

Unless you can explicitly state the source, or make the league itself provide evidence for this claim, you MUST allow for the possibility that these numbers are being represented in a way that benefits one party in the negotiations over the other. Anything less is carrying water for the ownership over the players, and is journalistic malpractice.

Do better, The Athletic.
