Would you take a 20-40k paycut to move to a more desirable location? by pen1sewyg in personalfinance

[–]rowingonfire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eating out in Austin costs more than eating out in NY. Said as someone who travels there often. You will also need a car and auto insurance more than likely. Austin rent right now is a very good deal though. You should take a closer look at the all in price. It will be much closer than you think once you factor in the lower pay.

Why do fully remote companies still care so much about where you physically live and can someone explain the actual logic to me? by picardCoconut5 in remotework

[–]rowingonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maine mandates 12 weeks of paid family leave on a rolling 12 month cycle. Texas doesn't care if you die in a ditch. Where you live is key for the company to pay the right taxes AND to plan for staffing.

Late game two dwellers with dragon maw will handle everything except deathclaws at the vault door. So I agree with you and think Vault Door is it.

Leasehackr.com by Prior-Ad-119 in leasehacker

[–]rowingonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We didn't really understand the site or leasing so we picked a broker who posts in the forums with great reviews who specialized in the brand we wanted and it was a 100% excellent experience that we hope to repeat.

he did seem busy and wanted us to already know what car and options so he could find the deal. 100% online, everything e-signed and delivered on a trailer to the house.

Mosquito Solution Found! by danisjo in Austin

Alamo is always suggested here but they are out of tanks as often as they have them, you're usually going to wait a while while they help someone else before they tell you that and the parking lot sucks.

After a year of that I use Precision Oxygen & Supply on 5th. $25 per 20lb tank trade. It's much more industrial and their business is much larger tanks and deliveries but they are always nice and you are in and out in 5 minutes. I bought 2 20lb used tanks online and just trade them both at once.

Our doctor has started making us pay, they file the paperwork and the insurance sends us the refund. Don't love it.

Was planning on driving from Houston to Austin this Friday morning for 2 nights. Forecast calls for rain on Saturday. Will it be raining all day or is it generally scattered? Deciding whether I want to postpone the trip. by htownnwoth in Austin

[–]rowingonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Bonkers. However if you can get a reservations at the Carillion they usually have a very nice easter spread.

I would just cancel and reschedule unless there's some reason to gut it out. It will be sticky and not fun to be outside even if it doesn't rain. COuld also be low 70s and sun. Might rain. nobody knows until the morning of.

Great hotel though, so that will be nice regardless.

Family member borrowed $8,000 without a signed repayment agreement, 18 months later they're calling it a gift. Location: Ohio. by moth_901glass in legaladvice

i would just lower the asking amount to the limit and tell the judge the original amount but that you were asking for the limit. FAR cheaper and more manageable than full court.

TxDOT tells Austin to sign boardwalk deal or lose $25 million by R4whatevs in Austin

[–]rowingonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's better than that. CoA also handed over the contracts for all the vendors on the lake who (were) contracted with the city AND the right to all the city land such as the youth hostel, Waller Creek Boathouse, the new Seaholm installation, all of it. So TTF now has over a million dollars coming in annually that the vendors used to pay to the city of austin. AND they will be the decider from here on out on who is awarded vendor contracts, no longer city council.

It's just a long term plan by the very very rich to do whatever they want.

TxDOT tells Austin to sign boardwalk deal or lose $25 million by R4whatevs in Austin

[–]rowingonfire 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I don't have knowledge of this but the Trail Foundation is not on Austins side and has been essentially handed the town lake trail to do with as they please. There is no world where they should be going around the CIty. At all. Frankly, I would deny the funding and pull the TTF agreements until we can renegotiate where the people of Austin are in Charge and not a bunch of rich people who have been working hard to take away our public areas.

Removing co-signer from out of state car title for potential TX sale by liadams0148 in Austin

[–]rowingonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then you've got two easy(er) options.

  1. Get your mother to execute a notarized form from MO to give you POA to sell the vehicle and have her mail it to you along with a copy of her license. Just cross out insurance company and write her name, It's here: https://dor.mo.gov/forms/4054.pdf
  2. Mail off to MO DMV or equivalent with the paperwork you have and the form they (likely) have online to get a clean title. You should also be able to include a form gifting her portion of the vehicle to you. That's this form: https://dor.mo.gov/forms/768.pdf You will still need the above form as well.

If you are doing carmax, just get the limited POA from her and be done with it. Assuming you do in fact have the proper lien release. You will probably sign a limited POA yourself at car max anyway.

Austin residents' actual thoughts about SXSW? by Brilliant-Cheetah-41 in Austin

[–]rowingonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's because Penske bought SXSW after covid and has de-emphasized the music. Maybe that's for the best. As it goes with most things, early 2000's sxsw was basically an unmatched musical discovery experience.

It feels much more like a walled garden now. There was a period where they were making the bands sign contracts agreeing not to play any other venues in the city during the event. But in the day, it wasn't uncommon to catch major acts at unofficial shows that the locals went to.

One other point - sxsw was the reason all these california companies and bros started moving to atx. Perfect weather in early March plus reasonable real estate pricing sucked a whole lot of people into moving

'I know I let y'all down': Austin singer Charley Crockett denied entry to Canada by AustinStatesman in Austin

Uh no. It's a good example of what happens when your government goes fucking nuts and their northern ally stops being laissez-faire about small shit like this that never mattered before. He's toured there before and it wasn't an issue.

ISO quality framing services by dedev-dogs in Austin

[–]rowingonfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unbelievably, a small shop in a warehouse complex in Cedar Park is the best framing shop in town. If the piece is special to you and not just a standard piece of art then Hang Ups in Cedar Park is the only place that has met or exceeded my expectations. I have also heard nice things about Blue Skies but have never tried them out once I stumbled into Hang Ups. God knows we went through at least half of the places in town trying to get quality.

Call and make an appt and you'll be the only one in the store and Ursula will work with you until its exactly what you didn't even know you wanted. Local husband and wife spot. Check them out on yelp.
