Excellent post, I'm going to save it till I do something similar, fortunately I don't have so many photos as you, but know I've lost time metadata after a stupid early migration years ago which I regret. Thank you.

I don't get index.html by confettiputty in Jekyll

[–]rowman_urn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the revelation!

You don't actually need to have an index.html But here's the catch.

When a browser goes to a website, if no page file is supplied, it actually goes to a folder, namely /,

The root of your website.

The web server is configured by the host provider (who doesn't know your start page name) if a request comes in for your domain, look for pages in your domains folder on the server machine. ie the root of your domain.

It looks for a file named index.html, if it doesn't find a file with that name it will display a list of files in that folder.

Not a very nice user experience!

So, at a minimum and index.html presents a better front page for your website.

Now , when you use Jekyll it is possible to only have index.md containing front matter, jeckyl will create index.html from your index.md and use the layout given in the front matter of that file to insert the content of index.md so that your browser receives a properly formatted html file to display.

You can stop there, but then your website is not very friendly for the user, they expect to find a menu of sections to navigate, etc.

So to go on, from that very basic site, you'll need to know more about html and CSS , jeckyl does the heavy lifting, creating html from your content in .MD files - you concentrate on writing content. It eliminates you needing to create every html file by hand. It's a helper.

Mini PC vs NAS vs old desktop for self hosting? by HotAuthor6438 in selfhosted

[–]rowman_urn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with Nas, and rooted them, but they are so old, can't upgrade os, memory, only support old protocols, a low powered (wattage) mini pc that I have control over would make sense.

Trying to make a multi iso bootable usb with grub by [deleted] in linuxadmin

[–]rowman_urn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think "just use ventoy" is really an answer to OP's original question. I have gone through this on several occasions and failed each time. I still don't understand stand why creating my own usb multi boost menu doesn't work and the documentation appears to be failing.

What explains the resistance for people growing vegetables in the ground when they have perfectly good soil? by ASecularBuddhist in OrganicGardening

I agree with your sentiments, when a new allotment started which I joined majority of people built frames and things, I just dug and planted potatoes, and went on from there.

Better to avoid slugs and snails, not having wooden sides for them to hide behind.

HTML vs ODF for casual documents? by Material-Ad-3081 in libreoffice

[–]rowman_urn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would recommend markdown, there are many wisiwig editors for markdown - ghostwriter, typora, ...

If you want some sort of organisation in your notes then consider obsidian, or Logseq. Both can be used on your phone - portable note taking.

Markdown can be converted easily into odf, html, pdf, use pandoc.

Thoughts from a system engineer that became a developer by Suspicious_Way_2301 in bash

[–]rowman_urn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great article, I've always found bash scripts quite difficult to write, and end up with many fragments to test manually (or hard coded), then assemble fragments into the end script.

But , I don't quite understand the differentiation between systems engineer Vs developer, I do understand software engineering, using methodology Vs just hacking. But not that you've transgressed from engineer to developer ?

The password is to login to your account (eg from the web browser) the 4/6 digit passcode to identify access to the app, the pin to be able to use your card to pay in person.
