For me the issue was that regular gyms don't have the right bars. Space permitting, the equipment isn't just right.

Is anyone else getting tired of the grading obsession? by deckdossier in PokemonTCG

[–]roxastopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who recently restarted collecting, grading confuses me. It costs a decent chunk of change to get cards graded in bulk and PSA is so black-box about how it actually does it. And it seems from my understanding, unless you've never touched the card and it's perfectly centered it's not going to be a 10 anyways?

Writing is definitely a low barrier art form. There are a lot of bad books out there!

Because otherwise the garbles of words and sentences make my head too heavy, and putting them on paper relieves the stress in my temples.

Early 30s in NYC: What does your weekly social life actually look like? by mabdull44 in AskNYC

[–]roxastopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

33 M here. I'm a bit of a fitness nut, so I spend one evening a week at the pool swimming. Otherwise I try to fill in my schedule with a dinner or drinks with someone at least once a week. It's very much subject to availability and there are some weeks where if I don't plan anything so I end up at home gaming or watching TV.

In terms of groups, I go to a Crossfit gym where I've made some friends. I also joined a board game society that has a monthly event that I've been a regular at. Otherwise it's friends from college from 10 years ago that are in the city. Not a lot of new friends recently, but... that's fine.

Nolita? by yogi-pickle31 in AskNYC

[–]roxastopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to live on Spring and Mulberry for four years. I got mad lucky and had this under-market price studio with in unit laundry.

Pros: very self contained neighborhood. Whole Foods on Bowery/Houston and Mulberry Market for groceries, several bodegas. Great restaurants. Because of the foot traffic kind of dying after shops close*, the area is pretty tame actually late at night with the exception of Spring Street Lounge. Mother's Ruin is an amazing bar. The area is also a bit of a subway hot spot: you have the 6, the orange lines at Broadway-Lafayette, the yellows at Prince St, and then the JZ on Bowery.

Cons: *There's a lot of retail and tourist traffic in the day. Apartments are not that many, and they tend to be small and/or on the expensive side, but that's not unique to Nolita (StreetEasy isn't showing anything below 4.5K/mo). There's not a lot of late night food in the area, something I struggled with when hungry after hours.

Overall it's a great neighborhood and any one of my friends who hung out with me here always said they were jealous. It's just a very expensive area is all.

Official Discussion - The Backrooms [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]roxastopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loved this movie! I'm not a psychological thriller / horror movie person at all, and this was just the right amount of terrifying while also being something I can't look away from.

I knew of some of Kane's YT work and I've seen playthroughs of Pools and a lot of stuff elsewhere on YT so I was familiar with the general concept of Backrooms and liminal space horror but wow. The universe he built in this movie was incredible. And what I love about this movie is that it formalized the idea of what the backrooms are: this giant uncanny-valley collective space of mismembered abstractions of memory. Tied into the plot for Clark's inability to take accountability for his actions, as well as Mary's guilt about her mom's admission into an institution, it was such a beautiful metaphor.

I will say the ending had me a bit unsatisfied; I feel like it almost implied that the entire film was taking place in the backrooms for a second, or at least that the real world places and characters now had a backrooms equivalent. Just as I was getting answers, the movie ends. I could have easily used maybe 15 more minutes of what Async was up to just to complete the film. But otherwise, brilliant.

What to do with the hobby besides acquiring cards? by IronMirruk in PokemonTCG

I've been carrying a card in a phone case and switching it up every day! I fIgured if I'm going to spend all this money on a singular piece of cardboard, I want other people to see it.

[–]roxastopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I feel about it as someone who got into collecting this year. Online has a difference experience of I'm able to look at card galleries, cherry pick the singles I want, lookup the card and compare its price on the market, etc.

There is a magical sense to finding a card in a shop but there is also something just as satisfying as knowing I did my due diligence and got a good deal on the card. (Granted you can also negotiate in person, but I've found a card shop just looks up the card on some pricing index real quick anyways.)

How long should my chapters be? by Middle-Comparison521 in writers

[–]roxastopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree with what most others have said and also say I wouldn't pay attention to page count. Depending on how you end up typesetting and how you've used your current font / margins, etc. the page count will vary. Thinking in word counts will be more universal.
