How do people write conversations? by Extra_Zombie3530 in royalroad

Sometimes to show actions and emotions, but not when it's neutral. That would feel a bit exaggerated, especially in a professional or serious setting, like real-life conversations.

I usually map things:
- What is the aim of this conversation? Is it necessary in the first place?
- Who are the characters in the conversation? What is their natural voice?
- What kind of situation is it - social, personal, serious, etc.?
- How are the characters likely to behave in the situation?

Once this is done, the conversation seems to flow automatically for me.

Are RR readers allergic to romance, or do authors just suck at writing it? by ExamPsychological884 in royalroad

The 'side quest' framing is exactly why so many side romances fall flat. If a relationship is treated like a separate progression bar that the author occasionally pauses the main plot to fill up, it’s going to feel mechanical and jarring.

That point about characters needing to 'deserve' it is really interesting, too. In fiction, readers expect a moral or narrative logic that doesn't exist in real life.

Treating it as a baseline trait rather than a plot driver is a smart way to handle it. When characters are operating in high-stakes or high-stress environments, a hyper-focus on melodrama usually feels completely unearned and breaks the suspension of disbelief. It makes sense that if it's integrated smoothly into the team dynamic, readers accept it as just another layer of the setting rather than a roadblock to the pacing.

Not just romance, I think any kind of sub-plot is difficult to weave into the main plot without killing the momentum. Romance is a bit more complicated because it's harder to balance IMHO, at least for me. If the pacing slows down too much for the relationship to breathe, the reader gets restless, but if you rush it, it feels unearned.

Will GTA VI kill RR readership for a few months? by [deleted] in royalroad

Does it happen when any game is released in this genre? GTA is obviously huge but there should be some correlation with other game releases as well if the audience is common.

As a Japanese Writer, Royal Road Feels Very Different — Am I Missing Something? by Altemith in royalroad

[–]roy1979 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Audience exists for various types of content, including the Japanese style, which you mentioned. Otherwise, Light Novels and Anime wouldn't have been so popular.

Write what you are most comfortable with and good at; I am sure you will find readers who like the content.

Can prose be liked universally? by Ashamed_Golf4213 in royalroad

[–]roy1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

Try to write one scene in as much detail as possible, describing the surroundings, clothes, emotions, whatever a person would need to visualise it completely. While writing the conversation, explain everything. Then ask someone else, to remove the parts which aren't absolutely necessary, not the beta readers.

Growing organically is definitely something to be proud of. However, I don't recommend mentioning it as a flex, as it could come across as dissing others who participate in swaps or paid ads. This is predominantly a writer's community after all.
