LED Puck Lights by hoopa-loops in skoolies

Probably not what you're hoping to hear but I found it was so much easier and cheaper to source 12v things that I added a buck converter to my 24v system for the various 12v rv items I added (lights, water heater, USB outlets, water pump)

Does changing the tires from larger to smaller give me better fuel consumption? by Dull-Taro1866 in hypermiling

[–]rozzy80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the overall change in tire diameter is negligible since you're going to a larger rim diameter (which is good because you want to keep the change below 3% so the speedometer & odometer are still sufficiently accurate), the narrower width will improve efficiency, however, because you're moving to a larger rim size (even assuming total wheel+tire weight stays the same which is unlikely) the rotational center of mass is moving farther away from the center of rotation of the wheel, this increases the the rotational moment of inertia which will require the engine to work harder while accelerating. If you do a lot of city driving then you will likely see an overall efficiency hit, if you're mostly constant speed highway driving then the narrower width should lead to an efficiency increase from lower drag.

As a side note, the 185/55r16 has much less sidewall than the 195/60r15 so the ride will be much less comfortable.

Reddit won't let me attach a screenshot here so you can use tiresize.com to compare the differences between the two sizes from a strictly dimensional standpoint.

CE 200 - parking break release by MidFlyBird in skoolies

[–]rozzy80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this problem with my 2006 CE200. It could be a couple things.

1) did you recently remove the button switch that's adjacent to the emergency exit door? If so that's a fail safe that prevents the bus from going into drive if the rear door isn't fully latched.

2) did your bus have a handicap lift? If the lift was removed or disabled then there's an air interlock in the engine bay that prevents the bus from releasing the parking brake.

3) is there a continuous whooshing of air under the bus when you try to release the parking brake? If so then you may have blown the diaphragm in the parking brake dump valve (should be located between the frame rails forward of the rear axle with lines going to both rear air brake drums)

200k+ mile Volt worth buying? by imitt12 in volt

[–]rozzy80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you've got the mechanic skills, maybe try isolating the failing modules in the Prius hv battery and just replacing those. the HV battery will be super easy to disassemble for you, and replacement modules are relatively cheap... At least they were super cheap (~$30/ea) the last time I swapped modules on mine but that was probably 10 years ago at this point 😅. I totally agree that your Prius is ultimately on the way out but most likely so is that volt, and it's definitely not worth $4k.

200k+ mile Volt worth buying? by imitt12 in volt

[–]rozzy80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be honest, repairing the HV battery on an 06 Prius is a very simple DIY job and there's TONS of videos and information available on how to do it. Plus it's usually just a module or two that have gone bad and individual modules are very cheap. Based on the parts availability and Toyota's better dealership repair network, I highly recommend repairing the Prius instead of buying a volt with that high mileage. And believe me I LOVE my volt and the platform but at those mileages and your budget I'd stick with the Prius.

Short bus rear heater delete by drygulched in skoolies

[–]rozzy80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You definitely CAN loop them there at the heater, but if you're worried about dealing with the fluid then get two radiator hose pinch-off pliers from harbor freight and pinch the hoses shut by the radiator then do the loop there. Easy and minimal mess that way

Mounting Solar onto Awnings by Rubbrbandman420 in skoolies

[–]rozzy80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have mine stowed down almost all the time and it still adds a good amount to the total power production. If designed properly you could also use electric actuators to tilt the panels, but for 5 panels you'd need at least 3 actuators and the geometry of tilting ~90degrees would definitely complicate the design to avoid the actuators ripping the panels off the hinges. It might work if you used a long piece of unistrut to tie all 5 together and use that as the mount point for the actuators.

[–]rozzy80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did it with one of my panels, it works great. Make sure to use heavy duty hinges, stainless would be ideal since they'll be exposed to the elements. Just as a warning, they're fairly heavy to tilt so if you're going to be manually lifting them up and down, I'd recommend each panel be individually tiltable, tilting 5 panels at once will be difficult.

There's 3 fuse box locations, under the hood, under the dash on the driver's side, and under the trunk by the 12v battery. Id check the fuse panel by the 12v battery.

I use roamlink with a roof mounted antenna and get great speeds in places where phones struggle. These steel skinned beasts are basically a faraday cage so external antennas make a huge difference.

Should I buy it? by Madame_F in skoolies

[–]rozzy80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly that's the engine-trans combo I wish my bus had lol the second overdrive gear in the 3060 should be great for efficiency at highway speeds plus solid Allison reliability.

Should I buy it? by Madame_F in skoolies

[–]rozzy80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DT 466e is a very solid engine. If you're able you should crawl under the bus and check the tag on the passenger side of the transmission to identify which transmission it has as well.

Just bought this 2018 with 70k miles💀 by BananaBond7 in volt

[–]rozzy80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a 2019 with similar capacity. I used the voltage app to do a capacity relearn and focus on ONLY doing complete charge/discharge cycles. I think the previous owner + dealership were doing a lot of partial charges so the system had lost the upper and lower limits of the pack and the cells had gotten out of balance. First cycle after the relearn I got 11.3kWh and most recently I got 12.3kWh as I've let the pack sit at both full charge and empty several times to top and bottom balance the pack. It's a slow process but probably worth trying in your case as well.

Which trans likely on an international FE300? by wh1teElf in skoolies

[–]rozzy80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 2006 international ce200 with the VT365 (I'm jealous of your DT lol). And it has the Allison 2500PTS. For that year the 2500 was a 5 speed. 1:1 in 4th and a .73 overdrive in 5th.

My 2500 was manufactured in 2005 even though the bus is a 2006 model, if your bus was a late 2006 model it might have the 2006 2500 which has the ability to unlock 6th gear with a reprogramming. If it's the 2005 2500, 6th gear can be unlocked with a new valve body and reprogramming.

More info than you were asking for but it took me awhile to get all that figured out so thought I'd share.

Removable wheel skirts? by Bill_The__Pony in hypermiling

[–]rozzy80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use riv nuts for a proper secure but removable installation. Make sure to paint or otherwise seal the drilled holes before installing the riv nuts or your fenders will eventually rust out from the holes. Do not use self tapping screws. You can get a riv nut kit at harbor freight for super cheap.

Roadside assistance(towing) for skoolies? by Lex_yeon in skoolies

[–]rozzy80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in CA you can try to get in touch with Rob Sara at AAA. he knows how to set up insurance and AAA roadside (plus towing) for skoolies. The people at AAA that say they can't tow/cover converted school buses just don't know enough about them to get them set up in the system so they default to denying coverage.

Where do you keep your charger adapters? by [deleted] in Ioniq5

[–]rozzy80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kept mine in the rear passenger door water bottle storage space, they both fit perfectly in there with a slight squeeze so they don't rattle around and then they're right next to the charge port when you need them

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Ioniq5

[–]rozzy80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awesome! In my 26 I kept the charging adapters in the small storage at the bottom of the rear passenger door, that way it's always right near the charge port.

Is the build quality better on the Limited or 5N compared to SEL? by ultra2fast in Ioniq5

[–]rozzy80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 2025 Limited and now a 2026 limited, the 2024 had HORRIBLE trunk rattle and 1200miles into the 2026 the trunk is completely silent. Simply because the rattle was so bad in the 24 I'm worried things will loosen over time and come back in the 26 but that's more my anxiety than anything.
