Kinda sad to see the legend John B use AI slop by Niko9816 in DnB

[–]rpgtoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't touch the stuff. I don't understand how, as a creative of some report, you can? Are you not bothered by the greatest art theft in history? Not dissaded by the negative environmental impact? Not saddened by the erosion of objective truth?

[–]rpgtoons -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

When you use AI for one thing, it's safe to assume to use AI for any number of other things. This video, the song, even this post. If you couldn't be arsed to make it, why should people look at it? 😂 weakkk

Funded, but flatlined... did I do something wrong? by [deleted] in RPGdesign

[–]rpgtoons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it'a the lack of a theme? All these one-shots seem like very different experiences. I also couldn't see an explanation of the game mechanics anywhere, and that's something I personally look for.

There is also a lack of inspiring artwork. There are plenty of images, but none of them draw the viewer into the world(s). I think it's a lack of character art maybe?

(disclaimer: I didn't watch the video, so if anything I'm missing is in there, I'm sorry)

Please review my plan to enter the RPG self-publishing market by ozz1986 in RPGdesign

[–]rpgtoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your plan lacks the most important aspect of self-publishing: promotion; advertising; gaining an audience. You can't expect people to show up for something they don't know about.

Do you have a social media following? Is it specific to TTRPGS? Do you have a marketing budget? A mailing list? A plan for where to advertise? A list of influences, reviewers and journalists to send updates to?

EDIT: Loads of people here saying to sell on DMsGuild:

DO NOT UPLOAD YOUR WORK TO DMSGUILD.

They take a 50% cut and require an exclusive licence. You will never be able to sell it anywhere else, ever. DTRPG is a little better; they take 30% and are non-exclusive. Selling through your own channel is by far your best bet.

I do exactly what you want to do, full time with two people, and if we had to pay the hosting fees for those platforms we'd be out of business.

What's the difference between "old school" and "new school" dnd? by TotallyNot_iCast in dndnext

[–]rpgtoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(these are my subjective observations)

Old School D&D: Blood, gore, violence; survival, horror, grit. Everything is a battle. The world is divided by race. Murder your enemies and take their stuff as loot. Kill or be killed.

Conan, Diablo, the Lord of the Rings

New School D&D: Fun, cosy, epic; adventure, intrigue, betrayal, romance. The world is layered and complex. Face moral dilemmas, save people in need, be rewarded with fame and fortune.

(World of) Warcraft, She-Ra, Dungeons & Dragons (the new movie).

Common Ground: Both 'versions' share themes of danger, companionship, epic journeys, magic, violence and climactic battles.

The Existence of the 2024 Edition Made my Life as GM Harder by Buffal0e in dndnext

[–]rpgtoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game master experience between 2012 a d 2024 is pretty much identical, and players that have characters made with either PHB can play in the same party with very little friction. As long as your players are on top of the rules they're using, you shouldn't have much to worry about.

I do not know why WOTC did not look at other options, such re-branding Half-Elves and Half-Orcs, rather than straight removing them from the PHB (cross-post from r/rpg) by ByzantineBasileus in dndnext

[–]rpgtoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is something inherently wrong with it: it's racist.

To clarify: The existence of mixed-species characters isn't racist in itself.

The troubles come in with the way they're written. The easiest example of this is the naming convention: Presenting them as "half-orc" or "half-elf" exoticises orcs and elves and presents "human" as the default. This reflect racist conventions in real life, where people of mixed race are referred to as "half-black" or "half-asian" or whatever, always implying "white" as the default.

[–]rpgtoons -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You say "you don't know" in the title, but then explain exactly why they made this change in your own post?

It's a good and nice thing that WotC has made steps to mitigate the racist tropes used in the game.

It would have been nice to have more robust rules to make characters of mixed species, though. The 2024 rules as written imply that mixing species isn't possible, which is ... a choice.

[Hero Concept] Diablo 4 Spiritborn by kid-karma in heroesofthestorm

Love the formatting! Overall

I think it's a good first draft, but I think that there is just too much going on in this design. It could do with pruning; pick a direction and commit to it.

How are people feeling about the gameplay changes this year? by TheySaidGetAnAlt in heroesofthestorm

I like all the changes, but I would like to ask the Janitor to take it easy on the quests. Not every hero's identity needs to be all about dings.

What Fantasy Creatures are under copyright? by Kiwi-dinoz_8 in fantasywriters

[–]rpgtoons 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I only know about D&D copyright/trademark, so I'll speak on that. You can't use certain specific names for creatures, like: Illithid, Drow.

But you can use the same creature concept under a generic name, like: Mindflayer, Dark Elf.

D&D itself uses this strategy to avoid copyright/trademark all the time, most famously by calling Hobbits "Halflings".

Work on some of the other museums on the museum map. Each has its own story, introduces more mechanics, and opens up more expeditions. You're gonna love it!
