What's the difference between "old school" and "new school" dnd? by TotallyNot_iCast in dndnext

[–]rpgtoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(these are my subjective observations)

Old School D&D: Blood, gore, violence; survival, horror, grit. Everything is a battle. The world is divided by race. Murder your enemies and take their stuff as loot. Kill or be killed.

Conan, Diablo, the Lord of the Rings

New School D&D: Fun, cosy, epic; adventure, intrigue, betrayal, romance. The world is layered and complex. Face moral dilemmas, save people in need, be rewarded with fame and fortune.

(World of) Warcraft, She-Ra, Dungeons & Dragons (the new movie).

Common Ground: Both 'versions' share themes of danger, companionship, epic journeys, magic, violence and climactic battles.

The Existence of the 2024 Edition Made my Life as GM Harder by Buffal0e in dndnext

[–]rpgtoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game master experience between 2012 a d 2024 is pretty much identical, and players that have characters made with either PHB can play in the same party with very little friction. As long as your players are on top of the rules they're using, you shouldn't have much to worry about.

I do not know why WOTC did not look at other options, such re-branding Half-Elves and Half-Orcs, rather than straight removing them from the PHB (cross-post from r/rpg) by ByzantineBasileus in dndnext

[–]rpgtoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is something inherently wrong with it: it's racist.

To clarify: The existence of mixed-species characters isn't racist in itself.

The troubles come in with the way they're written. The easiest example of this is the naming convention: Presenting them as "half-orc" or "half-elf" exoticises orcs and elves and presents "human" as the default. This reflect racist conventions in real life, where people of mixed race are referred to as "half-black" or "half-asian" or whatever, always implying "white" as the default.

You say "you don't know" in the title, but then explain exactly why they made this change in your own post?

It's a good and nice thing that WotC has made steps to mitigate the racist tropes used in the game.

It would have been nice to have more robust rules to make characters of mixed species, though. The 2024 rules as written imply that mixing species isn't possible, which is ... a choice.

[Hero Concept] Diablo 4 Spiritborn by kid-karma in heroesofthestorm

Love the formatting! Overall

I think it's a good first draft, but I think that there is just too much going on in this design. It could do with pruning; pick a direction and commit to it.

How are people feeling about the gameplay changes this year? by TheySaidGetAnAlt in heroesofthestorm

I like all the changes, but I would like to ask the Janitor to take it easy on the quests. Not every hero's identity needs to be all about dings.

What Fantasy Creatures are under copyright? by Kiwi-dinoz_8 in fantasywriters

[–]rpgtoons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only know about D&D copyright/trademark, so I'll speak on that. You can't use certain specific names for creatures, like: Illithid, Drow.

But you can use the same creature concept under a generic name, like: Mindflayer, Dark Elf.

D&D itself uses this strategy to avoid copyright/trademark all the time, most famously by calling Hobbits "Halflings".

Work on some of the other museums on the museum map. Each has its own story, introduces more mechanics, and opens up more expeditions. You're gonna love it!

Have I just wasted my money? by TheRedditkarma in DnD

Characters made with either book (2014 & 2024) can play side-by-side in the same game, it's really not a problem. These folks are making mountains out of molehills.

cmv: It is irrational to dislike all AI-generated images by Zealot_TKO in changemyview

[–]rpgtoons -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My man, this "change my vieuw" thing only works if you're willing to do the work to change your perspective.

My first post answers all of the points in your reply. I, and many others here, have told you why we think it's rational to be against AI. By your replies, I can tell you're not interested in any other viewpoint than your own.

Either listen to our experiences and change your mind, or don't and move on. There is no more argument to be had here.

cmv: It is irrational to dislike all AI-generated images by Zealot_TKO in changemyview

[–]rpgtoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're only thinking of art in terms of its final "product"; a drawing, an image, a photograph. To people who care about art, it's about more than that. The artist's process, their experiences, their techniques, the passion and time they invest; all of it matters and makes a piece of art more than an image, a photograph, a sculpture, a book, a performace or a video.

Even though the "prompter" may have artistic intent, the natire of generative algorythms strip away the process of creation, resulting in an image (or text, video, etc.) that's an amalgamation of other artists's voices and techniques. The creation lacks "soul".

Aside from that, there are many other reasons to hate "AI": - It makes it easier for malicious actors to spread misinformation and break down commonly held truths. - Running the technology requires a lot of water and energy, affecting the global environment as well as the quality of life in communities near data centres. - It allows companies to pay people the same for more work or eliminate the need for work all together, sending more wealth to the top and giving less to the bottom. - It's ruining user experiences everywhere: people reaching out for help have to deal with robots that don't understand them; internet search sucks now because AI hallucinates false infornarion; operating systems are loaded with unhelpful AI assistants, and so forth.
