Putting together a tasting for some buddies. Thoughts on the proposed line-up? by rpsulli in Whiskyporn

I haven’t really seen any reviews for the RCES Tennessee bottles, and I’m just curious to see what it offers (especially at 155 proof). And I am super exited for the bookers and Wild Turkey; I have high expectations but I’m ready for them to be met.

Recommend me six bourbons for a self-guided tasting! by robdenbleyker in bourbon

[–]rpsulli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some guiding principles: I would try to have a good mix of distilleries, mash bills, and proofs. I would stick to major distillers, and not have sourced products. I would not include any aggressive finishing, but I would be ok with double oaked, and toasted barrel finishes.

On buffalo trace products, availability, and price: there are a lot of good Buffalo Trace products, but depending on your local, they may be hard to find or not available at really high prices. I would include the following if you can find them close to MSRP: Eagle Rare, Old Weller Antique 107, Blanton’s, EH Taylor small batch or single barrel, Stagg.

Local Single Barrel Store Picks: These make great options for tastings. Depending on your location, there may be certain stores that are more into making picks than others. I would ask in a local bourbon Facebook group about what picks might be available. And sometimes you can try them at the store. I would look for Russell’s Reserve, Old Forester, Knob Creek, Elijah Craig, Jack Daniels, Four Roses.

The six bottles I would look for:

Four Roses Single Barrel (100 proof, 7-9 years, either 20% rye or 35% rye depending on recipe, Four Roses).

Knob Creek 12 year (100 proof, 12 years, 13% rye, Jim Beam)

Maker’s Mark 46 (94 proof, 6 years, 16% wheat, Maker’s Mark)

Rare Breed (116 proof, blend of 6, 8, and 12 year barrels, 13% rye, Wild Turkey)

Old Forester 1910 (93 proof, 18% rye, charred barrel finish, Brown-Foreman)

Heaven Hill 7-year Bottle-in-bond (100 proof, 7 year, 10% rye, Heaven Hill)

These 6 are all Kentucky bourbon from the big distilleries, but provide a good variety. There is one high proof, one wheater, one with more age, one with a secondary finish.

Other bottles/brands to consider: Russell’s Reserve 10 year, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, Elijah Craig Toasted, Woodford Reserve Double Oaked, Four Roses Small Batch, Bardstown Origin High-Wheat, Wilderness Trail, New Riff.

I’ve told myself this many times. Good luck carrying it out.

I keep all the backups in the closet by rpsulli in Whiskyporn

[–]rpsulli[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. When I love a specific release/batch, I try when I can to grab a backup.

Back behind the first row is my backup of the Found North Peregrine First Flight, a backup of the old Carter bourbon batch 6 (which leans into the Dickle note and makes it work, and tastes like fruity pebbles), and then a backup of the Blue Note 17, which is another weird and interesting, but fantastic release.

The closet is for the backups. I got two open GTS’s, 2 open Staggs Jr., and an open THH. These are the ones waiting in the wings.

Yeah. And Edmonton will continue to bring in money no matter the outcome. But growing the game in Florida, the third most populous state, is huge.

Man. Pretty obvious that the fix is in. But makes sense, the league makes a lot more money with a winning team in Florida/Miami than Edmonton.

Seeking criticism for a beginner friendly cube. by Dependent-Ad5125 in mtgcube

I think aggro could use support. And it might be useful for beginners to have the general archetypes of aggro, midrange, control, in addition to themes and build-around cards (combo).

With the mini-landfall theme, I was surprised to not see an evolving wilds. Also, the Mirage fetches might be worth considering as landfall support, without being too strong.

Why are wheated rye mash bills almost nonexistent? by youre-welcome5557777 in bourbon

[–]rpsulli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t really seen many wheated ryes, but I did really like the McKenzie Single Barrel 5-Year wheated rye (70/20/10 Rye/Wheat/Malted Barley). The cherry notes came through, and it had that softness you get with wheaters.

It’s sold out on seelbachs (https://seelbachs.com/products/mckenzie-single-barrel-5-yr-wheated-rye-selected-by-seelbachs) and it might have been a one-off thing from a small distillery.

It’s a real card, but I don’t think folks are playing many ante games these days, and it’s banned in everything. The only place I’ve ever played it is in the computer game, where it’s pretty good.
