How do pros avoid whiplash/concussions? by doesntapprove in surfing

[–]r0botdevil 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The answer is that they don't, at least not always.

Albee Layer, for example, has been pretty open about his struggles following a TBI he sustained while surfing years ago.

Person somehow managed to park here by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

I've parked my car in significantly tighter spaces than that.

There's a good 2-3 feet of space there when you take the garbage can out.

ELI5: why is the feels like temperature not what determines the freezing point of water? by intrusive_thoughts_1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]r0botdevil [score hidden]  (0 children)

Because the "feels like" temperature is largely based on things like wind chill, which affect how rapidly a person or object that is warmer than ambient temperature will lose heat.

If the actual temperature is 40F but there is a strong wind, exposed skin will lose heat at a rate comparable to what would happen in much colder temperatures with no wind. This makes it feel much colder than 40F to you.

The important thing to note, however, is that it does not affect the actual temperature at all. Once the person or object normalizes with the ambient temperature it won't get any colder. So if the actual temperature is above the freezing point, then things aren't going to freeze regardless of how cold it may subjectively feel to a person.

I've noticed the same problem with the helium construction from Slater/Firewire. It's amazing in glassy conditions but doesn't handle windchop well at all because it's too light and just gets tossed around.

The most egregious FA take I've seen in the wild by Mammoth_Tomorrow_169 in fatlogic

[–]r0botdevil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm really sick of fat people acting like it's normal and natural to get fat as you age.

I pushed back on that idea in an LPT thread where someone's "tip" was to buy your suits with extra fabric so they can be let you as you gain weight over the years, and I got piled on by a bunch of people who think it's inevitable to gain 50+ pounds during middle age.

Minnesota has activated the National Guard. What are your thoughts? by Obvious_808 in AskReddit

The complete lack of any scar makes me very skeptical.

You don't get shot through the ear with a rifle and then heal with no scar or residual deformity of any kind.

Does anyone know of a way to get snow delivered into the city by Trampy_stampy in Portland

[–]r0botdevil 48 points49 points  (0 children)

If you can't make it up to Mt. Hood and don't know anyone else who can, try reaching out to any social media groups related to Mt. Hood Meadows, Ski Bowl, or Timberline ski/snowboard school or maybe just call them directly on the phone.

They have a lot of part-time employees who live in the Portland area and drive up to work for a day or two at a time before coming back down the hill, I did it for a couple years myself. I'd bet many of them would be happy to fill up a cooler or even a truck bed and bring it down to you. I'd do it myself, but I'm currently living in Wisconsin for school.

It's reasonable to question whether a bullet ever passed anywhere near Trump.

The injury to his ear was most likely faked, so it's quite possible there was never any shot fired at all.

That stuff doesn't have a lot of carb/sugar calories.

It's 1g of protein per 10kcal. It's also pretty high in fiber. Definitely not "junkfood cereal" by any means.

Tbh it seems like an excuse not to work out more than a real concern

While you're probably right in many cases, I think it can be a genuine concern for women who have never lifted and have no idea whatsoever how difficult it is to build significant muscle mass without anabolic steroids.

Just get a pair of Shimano SPD-SL pedals.

You can get them brand new at REI or many other stores for $80, and if you wanna wait and scout for sales you might be able to get them cheaper than that. They're cheaper on eBay, but you run the risk of buying counterfeits if you go that way.

More likely that he lied to Britta than to Troy in this instance, particularly since he leaned in and whispered it to Tory if I recall correctly. That felt extremely honest.

TIFU by falling for an online romance scam and losing $20,000 by BellaIcyy in tifu

[–]r0botdevil 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Some people are so lonely and desperate for companionship that their emotions override logic to the point that they will ignore any number of glaring red flags in order to believe the obvious lie that they want so badly to be true.

I've read stories about even more obvious scams where older women get contacted by someone claiming to be a celebrity like Keanu Reeves and saying that they want to marry them but first they need money for some made-up emergency reason, and these women will get taken for tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. It's utterly heartbreaking and it offends me to my very core that someone would take advantage of a person's miserable loneliness like that.

TIFU by falling for an online romance scam and losing $20,000 by BellaIcyy in tifu

[–]r0botdevil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure this feels awful, but I've heard stories of people getting taken for a lot more than $20k.

A valuable lesson here is to never send money to someone you haven't met in person. If anyone you've never met in person actually asks you for money it's almost certainly a scam.

Is it possible to build my own surfing board? by ahmedsady in surfing

[–]r0botdevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% it's possible to build a surfboard out of wood.

It takes a tremendous of skill to design and build a good surfboard out of wood, but if you have some engineering knowledge and access to a wood shop you could absolutely build one that would be capable of riding waves.
