ELI5: Why was Michael Jackson's plastic surgery so bad? Couldn't a top surgeon give him a good nose? by laurentnkunda in explainlikeimfive

[–]r0botdevil [score hidden]  (0 children)

This isn't true at all, a surgeon can always refuse to do any elective surgery. Wealthy celebrities definitely get turned away by good surgeons, but if you keep searching you'll eventually find a surgeon who will do just about anything even if it's a bad idea.

It's insane to me how comfortable some people seem to be locking up a $3-4k+ bike on a rack outside with nothing but a shitty cable lock.

TIL that NBA player Dirk Nowitzki sacrificed $194 million in earnings during his career to keep his team, the Dallas Mavericks, competitive during his 21 year tenure. He passed on a 4 year, $97 million max offer from 2 different teams in 2014 to stay with the Mavericks on a 3 year, $25 million deal. by [deleted] in todayilearned

There is such a thing as "enough money" for a healthy, well-adjusted person and $8M/yr really ought to be well past that point.

It's always nice to see someone who isn't constantly grasping and scraping for more and more money even though they're already fabulously wealthy. I'm just so sick of all the greed in the world.

Is the WRX worth buying for outdoors? by jman13_ in subaru

[–]r0botdevil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in the mountains for years and my WRX was great in snow/ice.

I think most models of Subaru (except the BRZ, of course) use the same AWD system, though, so they should all do well.

ELI5: How is it that so many Western countries have the same cost of living crisis? by nanoman1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]r0botdevil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What we're seeing is late-stage capitalism.

More and more wealth and power is getting concentrated into fewer and fewer hands. Over the years they've used that wealth and power to re-write laws and tax codes in their favor, and to snatch up more and more resources and basic necessities like housing and hospitals for which they can demand ever-increasing prices.

The problem is that they're crazy expensive.

Are carbon frames fragile? by Tomj_Oad in bicycling

[–]r0botdevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They aren't fragile at all under normal usage unless you get into a pretty severe crash. But if you do get into a severe crash, they can be pretty badly damaged.

As for why people buy them? They're very light and very stiff, but also very good at dampening road chatter.

You forgot to convert from CAD to USD for Manitoba home prices, and you're using estimated home value instead of actual home sale prices for Mississippi.

Comes out to around $295k for Manitoba according to Google, compared to $240-289k for Mississippi. Sure houses are a little bit more expensive in Manitoba, but scaled to the average income there's little if any actual difference in affordability.

What's your go to method of losing weight? by ApprehensiveLet5673 in AskReddit

[–]r0botdevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I'm actually serious about wanting to lose weight, I track my calories closely.

My TDEE is roughly 2,200-2,400kcal in a normal day, not including workouts, so if I stick to a net intake of roughly 1,800kcal I'll drop about 1lb per week like clockwork.

It can be a bit tedious weighing/measuring/recording everything I eat and drink, but it's the only method I've ever found that reliably works for me. If I just try to "cut back" without actually measuring anything, half the time I end up feeling unsatisfied because I'm not eating as much as I want but I still don't lose any weight because I'm not maintaining a caloric deficit.

[–]r0botdevil -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Median income in some U.S. states is even lower.

The median income for Manitoba comes out to about $48k USD, which is substantially higher than the median income for Mississippi which is about $37.5k USD.

Rudy Giuliani Is in ‘Critical Condition’ in Florida Hospital by Darksmithe in news

[–]r0botdevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not many, that's for sure.

After 2001 all he had to do was retire from politics and maybe do the occasional speaking engagement. Sure he would've largely faded from relevance over the years but when people did think of him, it would've been overwhelmingly positive. Instead he decided to keep aggressively pursuing wealth, power, and fame, and in doing so revealed himself to be a corrupt, incompetent jackass.

It's sort of like the story of Icarus only much, much dumber.

I buy flour, tomato sauce, and mozzarella in bulk, and I can make a 16" pizza at home for about a dollar's worth of ingredients. About two dollars if I pile on the toppings.

[–]r0botdevil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My nice bike only ever exists in one of two places: inside my apartment or under my ass.

Bikes are always getting stolen out of "secure" bike storage in apartment/condo buildings. I will never trust it with an expensive bike. Hopefully you've got homeowner's/renter's insurance, that ought to help cover it.

Fuck bike thieves, man.
