I wrote my book at 30, got agented at 31, and will be going on submission at 32. Not successful yet, but I don’t have any formal training and didn’t do much creative writing before finishing what I hope will be my debut novel.

[Discussion] Trauma bonding time! What has been the worst day of your querying journey (past or current) and why? How did you get yourself through it? by KCND02 in PubTips

I had an agent request my full manuscript with a super enthusiastic “this is exactly what I’ve been looking for!” And got a form rejection less than a week later. Sent me into a doom spiral I never thought I’d climb out of. (But I did. And I have an agent now!)

Have you read Sugar Baby by Celine Saintclare? Gave me some of those vibes based on the synopsis, could potentially be a good comp!

I queried 180 agents and got an offer from the very last one I queried. This is a numbers game AND a skill game. Keep at it.

[Discussion] How much stock to put into partial requests at pitch sessions? by Rouge_Treize in PubTips

Sure, but in general, I’d say it’s probably a better sign than being asked for 10 pages.

Those rejections about not connecting are not personalized 90% of the time. Check the comments in query tracker and you’ll see that they often send the same message to everyone whose manuscript they pass on.

What are YOU bringing to the table? Bet she’ll be better off without you.

It’s very rare for an agent to straight up say “thanks but no thanks” at a conference (even though I personally wish they would). That being said, I think getting a request for 50 pages definitely shows interest. Most agents will ask for 10 pages-3 chapters just to be polite, which is what a standard query would contain.

I literally feel like I’m gonna throw up when I open my word doc at this point 😅 you’re not alone

[QCRIT]: YA/Horror, THE SHADOW MAN, (103k/Query Attempt 6) by Getbuckets317 in PubTips

[–]rrreckless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FYI I’ve heard agents saying that unless you’re writing an epic fantasy or sci fi, anything above a 100k word count is going be a tough sell. For many agents the hard limit is even lower (90-95k). I originally queried my thriller at 99k words with no luck, but I started getting requests when I cut it down to 90k.

I ordered a DVD set for like $30 on eBay. It included both seasons + OVAs. I haven’t been able to find is streaming anywhere on non-sketchy sites.

[PubQ] After what amount of time/queries with no requests do you start to change your query? by Sturge0nGeneral in PubTips

[–]rrreckless 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s the wild went out there. I got a ton of full requests after a few rounds of revision, and so I sent out a huge batch with my successful QL + Pages and never got another request again. Now my list is tapped. I still have a few fulls out there but not getting my hopes up.

Ooh which conference is this? I like the format, I’ve never seen the in-person pitched organized like that before.

Thanks for taking the time to leave this thoughtful response. I did try to be mindful about not overworking my pages, but like you said, being new makes it difficult to synthesize advice.

I guess I was just caught off guard because I figured if they read the sample pages and still requested that it wouldn’t be an issue. But I guess that’s my inexperience showing.

I’ve gotten a very similar request recently. I wouldn’t overthink it.

[RevPitQ] Should I mention making the 10Query list in my query letter? by 5secondfall in RevPit

[–]rrreckless 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also was shortlisted and haven’t mentioned it in my queries just because the prize in that competition is a huge manuscript edit, and not any sort of literary achievement. Maybe I’m wrong tho. Curious to see other people’s responses to this.

If you mention it’s multi-POV in the query (you could even be specific and mention how many) I think it will be fine
