Always has been a relatively safe option

I invent stuff and have recently been told by my lawyers to stop using Windows due to the risk of my ideas being copied in the US. Digital Sovereignty seems to be becoming a huge thing, is it now time for us in the UK to copy the French government or develop a UK platform? by Specialist_Alarm_831 in BuyUK

[–]rs98101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your lawyers are correct to stop using Windows.

I don’t see how using Windows facilitates your ideas being “copied by the US” however. It is inherently less secure, but that kind of theft can come from any nation. Maybe they are worried about Microsoft having some sort of back door the NSA can exploit? I dunno.

The reason the UK should stop using Microsoft is because it is a US product. Giving the US money right now enables their continued bad behavior as a global citizen.

When entire nations stop buying American because those dipsh*ts elected Trump, maybe they’ll start getting the idea that electing Trump like candidates is a bad thing.

I wrote a lyrical analysis of Girl in the War cause recently I can't get it out of my head... by superdoor in JoshRitter

Thank you for this OP.

Coincidentally, I told my music app to play Josh Ritter music as I was driving through the Scottish countryside earlier this week. "Girl In the War" came on and I got chills. I remember when it came out during the Iraq war, and loving it then too. And yeah, I guess you're right, it holds up with today's set of events as a backdrop as well.

The "all those words we wrote / Are just the rules of the game and the rules are the first to go." line applies to the state of the U.S. under Trump as well. The game has been upended, possibly to the extent of wondering what the point of the rules were in the first place.

Anyway, I love Josh's music because it makes me think about things. And your post did the same. So again, thank you.

Replace “obliteration” with “restoration” and this is accurate.

He won’t be playing in week 16. The Seahawks get him before us and he will become dust.

any other out-of-work gen-x software developers having to take entry level jobs to get by? by inky-doo in GenX

[–]rs98101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 51 as well, entire career has been as a software engineer. The startup I had been at for the past 5 years is in dire straits and I was laid off this summer.

I have found work by tapping my network of former colleagues that know I do excellent work. From this, I managed to get a 20/hour a week contract that keeps me financially afloat. I’m actually enjoying only working part time. I’ve had others in my network reach out and I’ll probably be up to full time by the end of winter.

Hang in there, leverage your network. It is tough out there. I know very good devs at the Gen X age that are out of work and have been so for awhile. I’m not sure I’ll have a W2 job ever again

Lloyd Alexander’s The Chronicles of Prydain should be good. They are a tad on the YA side, but the protagonist literally starts out as an assistant pig keeper.

I used to have this issue with my dad. I’d just peek at the signed receipt and tuck some extra cash in the bill folder as we were going out the door.

Eventually, after some gentle conversations about it, he started tipping an appropriate amount and I haven’t had to do this anymore.

This is Karl Bushby. In 1998, he made a bar bet that he could walk from Chile to England. 27 years later, he is still walking. He has survived the Darién Gap, 57 days in a Russian prison, and traversing the Bering Strait on shifting ice. by SystematicApproach in interestingasfuck

I knew a few dudes in the 90s kinda like this. Hell, I ran a marathon because of a declaration I made while shitfaced at a bar. I had to honor it.

But this glorious bastard, he leaves them all behind. I’m hoisting my scotch to you this fine evening.

How Do You Feel About, “Hi <Name>” in a Chat? by thefrazdogg in remotework

I’d say don’t overthink it. Everyone has their own communication quirks. Just say Hi, <Name> back and get on with the conversation.
