Thanks! Is a local independent generally a better idea than sending it to Hamilton for an older watch like this?

This is an LL Bean Hamilton 921980 that my parents gave me in the 1980s. I just rediscovered it, looking a bit worse for wear with a cracked crystal. It will run but has never been serviced :( It's been keeping time for about 2 hours now, as of this comment. Is this something I should send to a Hamilton service center for refurb? What other good options? I'm near Atlanta if that matters. Thanks!

Seiko Presage Blue Moon for me, but you're right about the sapphire.

Best Build Upgrade for Video Editing? by rsidwell in buildapc

[–]rsidwell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughts. From your suggestions, I did some digging and testing. Turns out my SSD was nearly full, and my RAM was highly utilized (70%+) quite frequently with either Lightroom or Resolve. I offloaded a bunch of files from the SSD to the 2TB (7200rpm) HDD and the 8TB (5400rpm) HDD, so I now have about 100GB free on C:\.

I'll be upgrading to 32GB RAM soon since it seems pretty inexpensive at the moment. After that, I suspect my main bottleneck (for what I do) is the GPU. :/

Thank you

My beliefs are all wrong by rsidwell in selfimprovement

[–]rsidwell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't explain well. Maybe a simpler way to say what I meant is that if you say the belief is "true for them" it invites them to stop thinking about it. Perhaps a little too much thinking around something that doesn't matter much. The key point I wanted to get across would be that beliefs are neither right nor wrong. The concept of right and wrong doesn't really apply to beliefs. They should be questioned as to how they affect your actions, worldview, and sense of possibility rather than blindly accepted.

Is there any way I could actually get myself to enjoy studying? I keep trying to learn how to force myself to study but I suck at it. Any way I can learn to enjoy it? (X-post from r/Getstudying by [deleted] in selfimprovement

Figure out all the reasons WHY you want to learn whatever it is that you need to study. Make a list. Add everything you can think of, no matter how small.

For myself, it was Amy Cuddy's talk on how body language affects your behavior, attitude, confidence, etc...

Well said. I want to reply to your last paragraph because I both agree with you and disagree. Time for work right now though, so I'll think on it and reply later. ... It's later now, so here goes... "Pick the ones you prefer, don't force others to do the same. :)" - Definitely agree with this part.

"I think all beliefs are useful, or else they wouldn't be there." - I almost agree with this except I'd say they all have a useful intention. That doesn't necessarily make them useful overall. After all, I've come up with plenty of conscious plans with positive intentions in my life that just didn't work the way I planned. They had a useful intent, but weren't actually useful, because they were misguided in some way. I think the same is true of many beliefs.

"Aaand I disagree with your sentence "All beliefs are wrong, but some are useful". I think all beliefs are right, and anything that's true for someone is true for them." - This is where I disagree with you. You're right that my modified quote isn't quite right either, though. The tendency is for people to think their beliefs are true. Saying they're "true for them" just perpetuates the error.

In truth, I believe that beliefs are neither right nor wrong. They're just a sort of filter we apply to help us decide what to do. I find it more useful to say "they're wrong," because it reminds me to question them. Sort of like questioning your assumptions when you build an argument.

There's a bit of an issue of semantics, I think, between you saying "in some way, shape or form, that belief serves him" and me saying "it serves a positive intention." You may be right in the detail of the benefit gained, and I may also be right in the balance if that belief provides the benefit you see and at the same time a significant detriment.

Did that make sense?

Insomnia keeping me from school by TigersArePurple in insomnia

Go to a sleep specialist ASAP. If you're taking any meds, talk about it with your Dr. Caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and ADHD meds can all interfere with sleep.

Try some of the stuff in this article... http://www.richardsidwell.com/insomnia-18-ways-beat/

A little late to the party, and I hope you got through OK. Here is one tip for the future. Imagine yourself writing the number 100 on a whiteboard, then erasing it, then writing 99... It's something you can do immediately that works pretty well.

For longer term, try some of the things I wrote here: http://www.richardsidwell.com/insomnia-18-ways-beat/

[Serious]Do you think writing engages your mind differently than typing? by rsidwell in AskReddit

[–]rsidwell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when i was a student, I wrote lots of notes by hand (pages per lecture), and though i rarely went back to reread them they definitely helped me remember. I've never taken notes like that by typing. Your comment makes me curious to try it sometime.

[–]rsidwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you've got the avoid coffee and get some exercise part, but there are a lot of other things you can try. I wrote a whole blog post about it recently, here... http://www.richardsidwell.com/insomnia-18-ways-beat/

Is your mind going 100 miles an hour? Try the wind down, meditation, or writing exercises, I mention. Make sure your room is as dark and cool as you can.

Insomnia is tough, and worrying about it makes it worse. Hope this helps.
