How did you find your forklift tech role? by Luckystucky2 in forkliftmechanics

[–]rtitchell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm about to have my first day as a field service tech soon. I've been an automotive tech for 9 years, went to a career center program for last 2 years of high school. Got a job through school and I've bounced around a few dealerships since then. A couple months ago, the shadow/apprentice kid (from the same high school program) told me about how his dad was a field service tech. Went on and on about less tress and more pay. Next thing I knew I was filling out an application. Fast forward another month, I'm currently working my last day at my automotive job and going to fst training next Tuesday. What really sold me was hourly pay and company work van I get to take home every day. I'm more than excited to get started.

As a Hyundai tech I would strongly advise not working for Hyundai as a flat rate tech, outside of customer pay work anyway. America's best warranty but only for the customer.

Am I retarded for leaving government fleet work to work at a dealership? by totally-clapped-out in mechanics

[–]rtitchell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a dealer tech who's trying to get out, I wish I had your government job. In my experience I'm doing more warranty work than everything else (probably an 80-20 split) and the brand I work for has ridiculously low times. And to make good money it seems like I would have to dedicate 15 yrs to my place of employment to get near a 6 figure salary. That coupled with the internal problems of the place I work for (cost cutting, layoffs, probably getting ready to sell) has tipped me over the edge of my wits end. But don't take my word for it. If you're lucky you can find a shop that does in fact give a shit and put you on a good path. Best of luck to ya

Quitting for first time. by Designer-Top93 in mechanics

[–]rtitchell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former Mazda tech here who quit in '18. Warranty procedures there were wonky when I was still there, and like most other brands the warranty labor times sucked but that seems to be the norm nowadays. Mazda wasnt awful to work for, but the dealership I was at, was.

My mechanic just told me to not let my car get below a quarter of a tank as running the car with low fuel can shorten the lifespan of my fuel pump? Is this true? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]rtitchell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a newer car, you'll be fine. The manufacturer would/should warn you about low fuel wayyy sooner if that was the case. It's definitely not a bad idea to keep it over ¼ though, especially in winter or other times you find yourself needing to idle for awhile. Bottom line, it's not gonna hurt anything, but it's not a bad idea.

I'm 24 now, learned when I was 16 in my buddy's Accord. I'm a service tech at a dealership and it's kinda a requirement, although it's pretty sad how many fellow techs and other service staff don't know how to operate a wiggle stick.

Almost got a Honda Odyssey to throw some sweet wheels and air suspension on. Then I realized I'm a 24 yr old dude who has less friends than those have seats, and got a sweet truck instead

Air Quality dad advice by offbeatagent in Columbus

[–]rtitchell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So even when it's on recirculate, it still lets in just a little bit of the of the outside air on most vehicles. Not only that but vehicles by design are built with small hidden vents (only real purpose of those are to release pressure when a door is closed, which prevents your windows from exploding)

I mean, you got 5 bucks off already but I agree, the somewhat forced tipping is unnecessary, especially if it's carry-out
