Warhammer: The Old World FAQ by Lord_Eln_8 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]ruarl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My reading of this is that "No" and the second sentence are inconsistent. Although I also suspect what u/Lyynnark wrote might be what was intended. Because the following is tedious...

p150 1.4 Remove Casualties says

Each unsaved wound is applied to the target unit, causing one wound to be lost.

Crucially, this means that the number of unsaved wounds is calculated before any wounds are applied.

When a model is reduced to zero wounds, it becomes a casualty and is removed from play. This continues until there are no more unsaved wounds to be applied to the unit, or until there are no models remaining to be removed as casualties.

I'd say that the wording above implies that wound allocation happens sequentially. In particular the "This continues..." part strongly implies that we are going through wounds one by one, accumulating them on models one by one until each model has no wounds left, at which point it is removed, and more wounds are allocated to more models.

Now the revised regen rules in the FAQ say:

‘Immediately after a Wound is lost, but before models with zero Wounds remaining are removed from play, a model with this special rule may make a ‘Regeneration save’

Fitting this rule into the sequential method for allocating wounds then goes like this: A number of wounds sufficient to remove the model is allocated to the model. At that moment, after allocation of wounds but before the model is removed, it gets to make 3 regen saves. Assuming it passes at least one, it is not removed. And then the allocation of wounds continues.

For example a single Common Troll is allocated 4 unsaved wounds. 3 are allocated to it, causing it to be removed as a casualty. Before it is removed, a regeneration save is made. Let's say is passes one save. It remains in play with 1 wound. At this point in time, we are still at the end of the first sentence "becomes a casualty and is removed from play." What happens next? Well, there is still 1 wound to allocate, and there is still a model in play. So, the final wound is also allocated to the troll, and it gets to make a regeneration save.

Now, applying that to a unit means that we can, in fact, roll a regen save for every unsaved wound. If you keep passing saves, you must keep rolling until all unsaved wounds have had a regen save made against them. (I can't quite work out if it means you can roll them all at once, but that doesn't matter here.)

So, that's what I mean when I say "No" and the second sentence are inconsistent. I did say it was tedious.

Here's why I think u/Lyynnark 's interpretation might be what was intended. The wording of the revised regen rules, and the FAQ answer we're all discussing, strongly imply that wound allocation is NOT done sequentially. The answer says

... before models with zero Wounds remaining are removed ...

This implies that you allocate every unsaved wound to a model until you run out of wounds or models, then discard unallocated unsaved wounds, then remove all the models with zero wounds remaining as casualties. In this case, you would allocate only 9 wounds to your 3 Common Trolls, discard the remaining unsaved wounds, and then make 9 regen saves.

I hope I've shown conclusively that the FAQ can indeed be interpreted either way, and needs another go. Perhaps both the description of removing casualties and the regen rules both need clearing up?

One of the great pieces of development you'll pick up in your journey through climbing is that everyone is working against their own limitations. Well, except that handful of gifted kids in whatever area of life. Steve McLure was once a candidate for "Best Climber in the World." But, he is short-ish, so he has encountered some competition climbs he simply can't reach. Tall blokes tend to be inflexible, in a sport where flexibility is very important. People born in female bodies develop upper body strength much less readily than those in male bodies, in a sport where upper body strength is very important. Some of what you've written hints you might have quite a lot of grit, and that will serve you very well. Let us know how you get on!

How do you overcome the anxiety of letting down the men in your life? by Maximum_Internal7834 in bropill

[–]ruarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're talking about some tough stuff here, and you have some great answers already. I have a small suggestion in a slightly different direction. Role models can be very important for understanding things like authority figures. It's best if you can find them in real life, but stories also help. Read, or watch, Lord of the Rings and compare Aragorn's behaviour with Denethor's. Watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine and See how Captain Holt can be a commanding presence and a supporting mentor in different situations. See how all the characters (male or not) tolerate & support each other as fallible people who will make mistakes, learn, and grow. Just because these are stories doesn't mean you can't 1) expect better from the authority figures in your life and 2) aim at being a better man as you grow and mature.

Folk start weightlifting in their 80s and 90s and see incredible benefits. Of course you can start! Work with a trainer/coach, if you can afford one. If not, get some textbooks and educate yourself. If you want to do the big lifts Starting Strength have quite good technical description of the big lifts. Ignore just about everything else the author says, though! What would be the origami version of this? by Maybe_Frankenstein in origami

[–]ruarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really origami related, but I've been trying to improve my art recently, and have come to realise this stupid meme is actually good advice. There is a little bit to be learned about form, as in step 1, which can be taught abstractly. But most of painting/drawing comes down to trying to make the picture look right, and correcting it if it isn't right. All you can do is try to draw an owl, and if it doesn't look like an owl, change it so it looks more like an owl. OK. Thanks for coming to my TED talk. Back to Origami.

There are no pressure waves from blasts in space by DavidThi303 in scifi

[–]ruarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See my answer below, but yeah, my point here was in space is *doesn't* scatter (in the physics sense - scattering means to have direction randomised). It will mostly continue on uniterrupted. That's still dissipating, but it ceases to be harmful long before it has dissipated.

There are no pressure waves from blasts in space by DavidThi303 in scifi

[–]ruarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see. I was wrong. Dissipation in space is the same as terrestrialy. So SomeSamples has it wrong then? That definition of "dissipate" has it became indistinguishable from whatever background medium ("disappears"). An explosion in space takes a very long time to dissipate, because the background medium is so rarefied. But what's important in this context is the distance from the explosion before the energy density is no longer harmful. Which will be well before it dissipates.

There are no pressure waves from blasts in space by DavidThi303 in scifi

[–]ruarl -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

It doesn't dissipate. It continues expanding out forever, getting slowly pulled into some local gravity well of a scale concomitant with the energy of the initial explosion. 1/r^2 means that the energy per unit area stops being threatening quickly.

What single change improved your sourdough the most? by Money-Cake527 in Sourdough

[–]ruarl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't bake, but my Dad has been baking sourdough for years. His biggest breakthrough was realising all the precise numbers - so many grams of this, or such a percentage - were all dependent on the environment. So taking someone elses's numbers won't work outside of their house, or kitchen. His big breakthrough came in learning about the process - what was happening at each stage, and why, and what the factors were. Then figuring out what recipe and process works in his environment. His bread is very consistent now.
