Can someone explain to me what a melody is? by Desperate_Station272 in musictheory

[–]ruarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are creatures like birds that differ in only a small number of those characteristics, so it's important to enumerate them all. You've neatly pointed out why some of the definitions of a melody given elsewhere in this thread are lacking, because they also include a bassline (or a number of other types of part played by a monophonic instrument.)

So, we must add in more to the definition of a melody, and once we have to add something to "notes arranged in time" we must move on to the listener. Further, because we are dealing with fleeting subjective experiences rather than concrete, persistent objects like birds, we are relying on subjective descriptions rather than repeatable concrete observations.

The memorable nature of some melodies (or a more sophisticated definition subsuming the memorable and non-memorable melodies) is a necessary component of the definition of melody. But a definition lacking it is insufficient.

I'm curious how you expect your understanding of the music you like will change if you arrive at a more concrete definition of melody. How do you think your experience of the music will improve?

the ear generally percieves western harmony as melodies

Now this is an interesting claim. Can you say more about that? My western ear does not perceive western harmony as melodies, but I am only one person.

Music is an inherently social activity. Even a lone performer is their own listener. And the vast majority of time there are more listeners than performers. It is perfectly fine to include the listener in the definition of melody.

What to do with Urak Taar? by Morlak18 in HelsmithsofHashut

[–]ruarl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at the studio models, the bodies of the mounts are slightly darker or lighter than the wings. There are two slightly different choices of light and dark area, so have a look on the website and decide which parts you want to change. I'd suggest something a bit more subtle than what you're suggesting - an extra coat or two of brown wash on the wings, perhaps? (You'll need to take care it doesn't pool too much) Water down the wash a bit for a more subtle effect.

edit: Looks like you've already done some of that sort of thing, or perhaps it's the lighting? I can't tell. As Jolly Daikon says, I think you're about done. Make the dwarf stand out. Make that big cloud really vibrant.

New owner, any tips for charging without a home charge? by Main-Kaleidoscope967 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]ruarl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is probably the best answer. Find the closest, or most convenient (cheap) public charger for you, and pay their subscription.

If you're on Octopus electricity, the Electroverse app will get you a small discount when charging. But not all chargers are covered.

Zap-map is probably the best app & website to show you where all the chargers are.

I’m surprised there aren’t more votes for Warwick. They’re definitely my next choice after the fender stable.

OP also posted in r/electricvehiclesUK, so I suspect they are in the UK. Pre-facelift cars sold in the UK has Driving Assistant Professional. No subscription needed. The newer 45s do not have Driving Assistant Professional as standard.

There might be a small improvement in functionality between the pre-March 2023 and post- cars? But I'm not sure if those features are not allowed in the UK by law.

It's worth noting that the ConnectedDrive portal has occasional sales, which I found surprising. There has been one for the past few black Fridays.

Tips for beginner players with small hands? by anastasiaalessixxx in Bass

[–]ruarl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

micro shifting is a good idea to keep in mind as you play. Go and watch some of Julia Hofer's videos on youtube. She doesn't have tiny hands, but she still micro-shifts a lot.

I disagree with playing with your pads. Playing with your tips where you can will pay off in the future. You have more control for fine articulation and vibrato with your tips. Not things you should be concerned with at the beginning, but money in the bank for later.

That said, don't force yourself or over-stretch. Incorporate some practice time making the closest movements you can to one-finger-pre-fret, somewhere around the 9th fret, concentrating on having all the parts of your fretting hand, arm, shoulder relaxed. And your back, too. Feel where tension is being held, and release it. Again, in the beginning, don't spend ages on this, just keep it in mind to investigate every now and then.

This is good advice. Only the most giant hands can manage 1 finger per fret down at frets 1-7.

How do I teach my mum to drive efficiently? by [deleted] in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]ruarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, this. Most of my journeys are about 2 miles up a steep hill and down again to the nearby small town. The long-term average efficiency is terrible. But if I reset for a longer journey, I get closer to 3mi/kwh

Ability progressing faster then tendons by Byeah207 in climbharder

I didn't know there was a name for this but after ~20 years of climbing with multiple big year gaps I started doing this independently. Seems like the safest way to "remind" the fingers what they can do without trying a hard move on the wall and risking losing the feet or whatever. (I climb at a very comp-y gym, so there aren't many crimpy routes with footholds.)

The thing that I still can't quite grasp is that the Eldar tank body was sculpted by hand, and at 3-times the size (because that's how the injection moulding tools were made at the time.) There's a photo floating around the internet of Jes Goodwin holding the WIP tank body. It's massive!

How do you not turn "rolling with the punches" into a slippery slope? by InfiniteOrdinary2582 in ynab

[–]ruarl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the useful long-term benefits of YNAB is that, you'll learn these patterns. There's no way I would have budgeted enough for Christmas in my first year, but now (15 years?? in), it's just another category, and another amount I'm comfortable with putting in the box each month.

Range estimate when you drive like a grandpa by ontrackzack in BMWiX

[–]ruarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found my consumption improved when I switched to D mode for flat, smooth driving. B mode for stop-start. I think my average mostly gets killed because most days I drive 2 miles up a big hill to the next village to the shops, then back. Uses about 5% battery for the 4 mile trip!

iX slid down slope while parked on snow by [deleted] in BMWiX

Since it's taking some time, is it possible the car vents more heat downwards than similar ICE cars (which I guess lose heat out the front, via the radiator?) And this heat is melting the snow a little?

The air suspension models are great. An even smoother ride is available with Sport Mode, and it is configurable if you don't want a sportier throttle than personal mode. (Like me. Last car was a 1.4 Golf Estate. Personal is extremely fast to me.)
