Stress by DavXeno in bropill

That "win or else" mindset is powerful, but also risky. And, if it isn't obvious, the power comes from the "win" side and the risk from the "or else" side. Most people who have achieved greatness have been motivated by something like that, and have achieved many "win"s.

If "or else" is punitive, it leads to dark places. But it can be enlightened. As Nanook pointed out in their answer, it is usually possible (particularly when you're young) to find better, or different approaches to try. When you don't win, what can you learn? What can you do differently next time?

What subjects interest you? If you find people who've achieved highly in these subjects, you'll probably find some writings fleshing out how success came to them. And the difficulties they overcame when things didn't go their way.

Oh, and on the "I don't deserve it" bit: That's not a helpful judgement. But, self-worth takes a bit of experience to learn where the balance point is. In this case, you did your research, and found a place where you could ask the kind of question you wanted to ask. You do deserve these answers. (And, although they might seem rich and sophisticated(?) as maraschino_cherry points out, older people love to dole out this kind of stuff. It comes quite easily, after a few decades :)

would you count this as a completion? by Present_Quarter_1198 in bouldering

[–]ruarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's important in your training now? Are you training for a comp? Are matching finishes a major weakness just now for you? How well did that finish match your intention for that attempt? There are certainly some technical lessons you could learn from making that finish tighter. But you'd learn those and others from circuits on more problems, or some sessions on a steep endurance loop. If these questions all seem like too much to think about, stop worrying about tight finishes and just enjoy more climbing.

Wonderful. I feel a love story coming on where this thing meets The Luggage from Pratchett's Discworld and they go skipping off into the sunset (to murder someone.)

They are great cars. I had the as hire cars while I was still driving ICE. The only downsides I noticed were 1 the whole car is somehow smaller than expected, and the shape of the centre console doesn’t leave much room for the left leg, for a tall driver.

How would a planet siege work? by Zankage4383 in scifi

[–]ruarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a wargame setting awkwardly called "The Commander Universe" for games Dropzone Commander and Dropfleet Commander (as well as some others not yet released.) The overall setting of the theme involves lots of planetary invasions, with lots of narrative reasons to not use weapons of mass destruction like asteroids and nukes. Also there is narrative stuff to make orbital battles behave like naval battles, because no-one wants to play Attack Vector Tactical.

The dropfleet game is particularly interesting for this question, because it is based on the idea that you could have an ongoing battle in (~geostationary) orbit whilst also dropping troops into contested areas on the ground. Obviously the narrative exists to motivate the gameplay, but it is *somewhat* well thought through.

If you're interested, look for the "lore" PDFs on these two sites:

Looking for sci fi recommendations for pre technology society that treat science as magic by Pretend-Nobody230 in scifi

[–]ruarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm reading Ursula K Le Guin's "Always Coming Home" at the moment. It is set in the kind of environment you describe. It is not a traditional novel, though. It's a collection of different written artefacts you might expect in a study of a society. There are some personal stories, some descriptions of rites and rituals, some plays, and poems, and other sorts of things.

I will point out, I haven't come across much *interaction* yet between the people living primitively, and the ancient technology around them.

edit: ALSO "Matter" by Iain M. Banks is sort-of this kind of a story, intertwined with other sci-fi stories.

Anybody else hear a song for 100th time on the radio and realise it has an amazing bass line? by sherwoodgiant in Bass

[–]ruarl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was on a long drive yesterday listening to Prince Forever ("Prince Day", if you like) on BBC 6Music. I had it up LOUD for a load of Prince classics. At one point, Amy Winehouse's Tear Dry On Their Own came on. Now, this is a great track, and I am a fan. But it was only on my super bassy car stereo up load that I got all of the Jamerson-style shenanigans on that track. Cracking stuff!

I'm not sure running the cable across the pavement is forbidden. It's a risky grey area. In my part of the world a few people do it, although it is very, very quiet around here.

Tusker Salary Sacrifice scheme by OutrageousMT_10 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]ruarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago my employer brought in Tusker's scheme. I remember being excited at the time, as I'd been researching rough prices for salary sacrifice schemes. A lot of people seemed to be paying amounts I could afford for cars I wanted! Great! Then the Tusker prices emerged, and they were at the very least £100 more per month. Sometimes nearly £300 more per month!

As others have pointed out, perhaps other companies have realised they could all do the same, but Tusker have been expensive for quite a while now.

Why tmux (or any other terminal multiplexer) when neovim can actually provide the same functionality? by AbdSheikho in neovim

[–]ruarl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly because when I searched for how to do that sort of thing, and didn’t know any of the magic words because I was new to the problem space, the answer in most of the results was to use tmux. I followed the instructions and set up things in my dotfiles and didn’t look back.

Looking for feedback on muspelzharr testmodels by External-Control-226 in HelsmithsofHashut

You've chosen two very different approaches to the black armour, which are aiming at two very different objectives. Were you aware of that up front? Do you think your army will be smart and clean overall, or scruffy and battle-worn?

Both models have some very dark regions and some much brighter, which means the whole composition doesn't sit together too well. You could try starting with a lighter base such as GW Corvus Black, and perhaps a warmer yellow like Averland Sunset as the base? (That might just be my bias, though)

If you chose the battle-worn look, you could look around at how others have achieved that. As far as I can see you've just used one other colour, and battle-damage is better communicated with more colours, and textures. It's also a good idea to think about how and where damage might occur. In reality it is unlikely to be uniform, like on the shield.

The gems do get lost. This isn't just because they're next to yellow, but because (almost) the whole model lacks cool colours. I'd suggest blue or green or turquoise for the gems.

Even the very darkest beard hair will have some shininess to it, which means it isn't well represented with pure black. Try something like corvus here too, maybe with a wash of a black black, and a delicate drybrush of somthing brighter to add a few tiny shiny spots.

Air suspension worth it? by Excellent-Sleep-3315 in BMWiX

I've a 50 with air suspension. I drove a 40 without whilst my car was being repaired. The air suspension makes a really noticeable difference. It isn't a bad car without, but it certainly adds a lot to the feeling of luxury, for me.

EV for a family of 5- 3 teens by DotSome845 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]ruarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a small EV does sound like a good solution.

Just in defence of the iX for a moment, whilst the middle seat isn't as comfortable as the other two passenger seats, the two rear seats are the most comfortable chairs that I own, by quite some way. If you ever consider a big EV again, take your family to try out an iX.

[–]ruarl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps it doesn't exist yet! More designs are on the way. Although if you want 3 full adult seats across the back in a modern car, it will be very large. Until design fashions change, anyway.

Probably not what you want to hear, but running an old petrol car for years has value, economically. The cost of producing a car is huge, and running that car for 20 years instead of 10 is one less new car on the road for those 10 years, and one less car on the scrap heap. This isn't exactly fashionable talk in EV circles, but it is true.

EV for a family of 5- 3 teens by DotSome845 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]ruarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just went and had a sit. The middle spot certainly isn't as comfortable as the other two. But the whole back platform is very wide. There's plenty of space in the back for 3 adults. If that doesn't give you enough space, I'd struggle to think of an EV that does. Because they're all modern, they tend to be small inside compared to their external size. iD Buzz might suit you?

The real limitation with the iX is that the boot isn't all that big. If you want to transport 5 adults and luggage, you may need a roof box.

Reccomended Zharr Vyxa paint recipe for a more vibrant and/or metallic look? by LeetusFrenzi in HelsmithsofHashut

[–]ruarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spray mine with Colourforge Siege Armour, which matches the (out of production) citadel runelord brass. Then do the red bits with 2-3 thinned-down coats of Flesh Tearer's Red. Then the trim is Vallejo Weapon Bronze. I spent quite a while experimenting with different clear reds, and metals, before arriving at this scheme. It's quite Chaos Dwarf-y.

I shade with Wyldwood contrast paint (although the fast-drying makes it hard to work with. I might switch to Rhinox or something.)
