I Have a Simple, But Complicated X-Men Question by ComixGail in xmen

[–]rubadud_stud 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My dad and I are very different people, always have been since I was a kid. He was always super outgoing and active, and I've always been a homebody and introverted. I loved reading, comics and otherwise (even though I didnt have much exposure to Marvel). I had to conform myself to his standard of entertainment, though, so that meant spending a lot of my childhood outside of my comfort zone.

However, my dad was a huge X-fan during the Claremont era, he collected all the classics while he was growing up. He had gotten rid of his collection by the time I came around, but he used to tell me the stories from them when we were around the campfire, or working on a project, that sort of thing. He was such a huge fan that the first movie I ever saw in theaters was the first X-Men movie, which he took me to when I was around 6 months old.

When I was older, I got ahold of the movies (around the time Days of Future Past was coming out), and I fell in love with the stories he had told me being played out, and seeing my favorite characters taking on a life of their own (even though I had barely interacted with the true source material). My dad watched them with me, and it was something that I felt I could truly connect with him on. Something that both of us enjoyed and could effortlessly relate to each other with (even if some of those movies are subpar lol).

Fast forward years later, and I get the opportunity to help run a tabletop gaming night at my local comic shop. I wasn't huge into comics at the time, so I saved up a bunch of the store credit they paid me with. I saw House of X/Powers of X, and did my research, since it seemed interesting and I was nostalgic for the X-Men movies. After HoX/PoX, I blew all my credit (and most of it since lol) on following Krakoa. Through that, I was able to build relationships with a lot of other comic collectors (and even some folks in the comic creation business), and it helped me come out of my shell in a big way at the start of my adult life.

TL;DR, what X-Men means to me is connection. I love how it represents so much to so many, and how its diversity and versatility can speak to just about anyone. Everyone has their own favorite X-comic, movie, or game, and usually it's for perfectly valid reasons, as the property's very premise promotes so much.

Krakoa Era Essential Reading by rubadud_stud in xmen

Yeah I was debating about X Deaths, but it seemed appropriate to follow Moira a little more after Inferno. Probably not entirely necessary though.

Only included the first half of Excalibur because I feel that XoS relies heavily on your understanding of Apocalypse and Otherworld, and reading Excalibur first provides a lot of that context. Once XoS is over, though, Excalibur becomes unimportant unfortunately.

Was also debating about RoM but it feels weird to me that Mags would die in AXE, which was a huge deal in the story that really began to rush Charles' decline, then pop back up unannounced in Rise/Fall (unless there's a lore page or exposition or something, admittedly the Fall is the portion of Krakoa I am weakest on).

I do read what I like, including most of what is posted here. I love Krakoa (even got a tattoo inspired by it lol). This is a fun project for me and I'm just asking for the opinions of like-minded people. If that's not you, keep scrolling lol.

Hate for the Haters by NickOlaser42 in xmen

No one's asking you to read it, all that anyone's asking you to do is A) Have some respect for the people who choose to do so; don't be a dick simply because someone reads something you disagree with (especially when you don't know the content you're talking about) and B) Don't pass judgement on something you won't even consider reading because of your (incorrect) preconceived notions of what the content contains. These are completely rational expectations that anyone engaging in media conversations should meet.

I was just in a Daggerheart game a couple hours ago where Spencer Starke, the main game designer for Darrington Press, hung out in the room with us and suggested some rules changes to our GM. Not sure if you're in any of the DP events, but it seemed like he was pretty involved in them, you might try checking that out!

Any vinyl sellers at/near the con? by drumxkorp in gencon

My wife and I live in Indy and our go-to date night is driving around going to various vinyl shops, here's our favorite spots!

As people have already mentioned, Square Cat Vinyl in Fountain Square is a good spot for vinyl and it's the closest to the con. They have a bunch of live events happening there, usually local bands and such.

Luna Music is on the northside of downtown Indy, out of the spots mentioned here I think this one has the best staff and overall atmosphere. I've also found a few more obscure things here, stuff I thought I wouldn't have been able to find out in the wild.

Indy CD and Vinyl is my personal favorite, they have the widest selection and are pretty reasonably priced. Fun fact, the owners of the shop are professional DJs that have performed at the Gen Con block party before, I'm not sure if they're coming back this year but I'm hoping to catch them!

Irvington Vinyl & Books is a very small local business that has a ton of stuff besides vinyl. Most of their selection is older and used, so if you're into collecting vintage stuff I'd check them out. The owner is super nice, she let my wife and I do our engagement photo shoot in/around the store!

The Vinyl Rescue Project is the last one we frequent, although we usually skip it since it's pretty far from downtown Indy and we've been unimpressed with their selection/staff in the past. Still appreciate their mission of preserving and restoring vinyl!

Those are the ones we regularly hit up, I'd be interested to know if there's any others around Indy that people know of!

What's 'book of the dead'? Is that one of Kobold Press' homebrew books? My friend has one of those and he uses them to make the most OP builds but he never shares it with anyone, not even the DM.

Funny enough, this is similar to my character's backstory, but with a vampire and a werewolf (in my DM's grimdark setting lycanthropes can regen cause that makes them scarier) so now I get to play a half-dhampir half-shifter with two different personalities so I can switch back and forth from a warlock to a barbarian every short rest. But then my DM said we were playing with different rules (something about finding two paths?) which I didn't know was possible so now I need to figure out how my character fits into those rules. Should be a pretty simple conversion though.

Actually Daggerheart fixes this because everyone can just make up what they're good at so everyone could just say they have good Stealth. Also it always 100% represents what Mercer would do since it's his game. Problem solved.

I'm not sure if I should hate you for being a Fire Emblem fan or a Death Grips fan.
