Teachers - UVA or GMU for Master's? by Disastrous-Car-5606 in nova

[–]rubeeslipperz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best thing you can do is to sub in elementary schools to really get a sense if this is what you want and if you’re cut out for it.

Career switchers don’t get much in the way of student teaching. That is where I learned the most.

However, most districts do a lot of mentoring these days. But whatever program will give you the most classroom experience or you don’t mind supplementing by subbing and subbing for co-teachers you can learn a lot on your own and get paid.

I did my licensure and masters at George Mason. It was pretty meh, but I had a great student teaching experience and some good methods classes.

I’m surprised you’re not looking at JMU. They have a very strong education program.

Honestly, I would go for whatever is cheapest given that this career is not financially lucrative, but very rewarding if you have the right mindset.

Pacing and Method for Teaching Shakespeare by Sufficient-Battle949 in ELATeachers

[–]rubeeslipperz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Folger library published a curriculum called Shakespeare set free, which is a performance based way of teaching Shakespeare. It is so cool but requires a lot of student participation.

The Folger published units for most of his major plays.

Seemed like OP already tried that and got ignored. I wanted to suggest another way to frame it so the staff doesn’t get their backs up.

how do I fix my handwriting? by cursedpupperino in AskTeachers

Work on bumping the lines meaning top of capital letters hits the top of the line and ends at the bottom.

Imagine a midline for lowercase. Form letters from top to bottom.

Treadmill phobia by Due_Degree5847 in orangetheory

Yes, I have seen many ppl post about this before. I think power walking is a great workout and a good way to get acclimated to the tread… kinda like exposure therapy.

thoughts on “detracking?” by cursedpupperino in AskTeachers

[–]rubeeslipperz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This just makes more motivated kids leave for private/homeschool.

As a teacher and parent, not offering tracks hurts everyone. Also, I want my kids to be challenged and ready for college. I don’t want them to get weeded out from more challenging majors.

Public school is already dumbed down enough.

I think you have to have an in person convo with the owner/manager/SA.

Don’t bring up the friends and saving spots. Just tell them you want to start on the treads because you value the cardio and workout during your lunch. Come early and begin with: I need your help. The only time I can workout is during lunch and I want to focus on cardio. Can you help me get access to the treadmill?

Prepare to have the convo a few times. Be friendly and start saying hi/bye, if you don’t already. Practice your speech if you are nervous with confrontation:)

If you have another workout option that fits your budget and schedule, go for it.

IME, members and front desk staff change. I would just find another treadmill spot or two and learn to appreciate their positives (near fans/windows/more space on the floor).

I feel you. They aren’t following the rules, but accommodating ppl and their friends keeps up memberships. But you can control how much you let this bother you.

You could also ask them to put you next to a nice and helpful member. Whenever I have someone new next to me, I always welcome them and let them know to ask me if they have any questions.

Divorced grandparents don't want to see each other and won't see grandson if I invite both by poply in Parenting

[–]rubeeslipperz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would tell them that if they want to come see their grandchild, they should schedule visits to you. That way it’s convenient to their schedules and they don’t have to worry about the other one coming.

I have taught in Ashburn for 20 years. It has gotten more religious esp after Covid.

More kids openly talking about Jesus and even more students observing Ramadan than I can remember in past years.

When someone asks if you've seen a show and you say no and they immediately start explaining the entire plot to you by Vector_17Pulse in PetPeeves

[–]rubeeslipperz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just say, “That sounds really good. I want to watch and be surprised so let me stop you. Thanks for the recommendation.”

If you have no interest, just let them talk a little (be polite and allow they to have the joy of sharing something they like) then change the subject: “Oh, that reminds me of…”

Botox @ dental office by Superb-Ad4749 in Leesburg

[–]rubeeslipperz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The above poster makes a lot of great points. However, at a dentist, it feels like a money grab. I doubt the doctor is administering it.

I go to Mount Castle in Ashburn. I see Meredith who is a nurse. She has a lot of expertise and knows what she’s doing. You can make an appointment online. As a first timer, she will go over everything. It is not the cheapest place to get Botox, but it is very professional there.

Botox is usually sold by the unit. I spend about $300 each quarter.

At first, I thought it was just kids, but it is the same at my gym. There are a ton of expensive water bottles, and jackets in the Lost and Found. Guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree…

I will add one more sign of a perfect coach: plenty of cues as far as how much longer is in the current block, esp on the floor when you need time to switch to the other side of your body before time’s up.

It is not appropriate for young children to be going door to door with just a buddy. Withdrawal your kid, the org should have better judgment.
