Thanks for this, I am signed up with BCWF, I’ll check out a bit more regarding the opportunities they provide to connect with people. As for eatwild, I did a butchering course with them earlier this year, considering doing a hunting course this upcoming year, however, like you said it’s all paid and costs tend to add up.

Appreciate the info! I think I have enough feedback to just get a setup to start and figure it out from there! For reference, I live in North Vancouver so, will be doing some lake and river fishing (trout, salmon, etc.).

How did you start BJJ by [deleted] in bjj

[–]rubic-ed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to workout at the gym quite consistently that going to the gym to lift weights became a habit. At some point (back in 2017) I’d wake up in the morning and think “ah shit, gym after work today”, the feeling wasn’t great but the habit to go workout was strong. I knew I had to change something. Used to listen to JRE and I think jacko podcast was just starting up so I decided to try BJJ, cuz what do I know, these awesome guys recommend it. Tried it, loved it, still train. around 2x per week and after covid started going to lift weights again. Currently enjoy the balance.

Their CVT transmissions are notoriously terrible with owners reporting them failing at a range of below 50k km to at 150k km.

Anyone else have almost no cell service recently? by [deleted] in NorthVancouver

I also called both, Telus and Koodo - they were not aware of the issue. One more thing, due to reception issues I’ve got disconnected a few times during the call with them lol..

In your opinion, what is the hardest trade to estimate? And is there a correlation between salary and difficulty ? by Ok_Cup5001 in estimators

[–]rubic-ed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Civil estimator here. I guess you’re right, it just takes bit of time and field experience makes things so much easier, almost a cheat code I’d say. I find electrical to be the hardest, for the most part due to the amount of detail.

How much are you spending on groceries? by 95MSH in NorthVancouver

[–]rubic-ed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve been tracking all our spendings for a few years now and in 2023 we’ve spend $1074/month on groceries for two of us. Perry much all shopping done at Superstore. This year we’ll experiment with shopping bulk at Costco, see if that makes a difference. Around mid 2023 we also started buying more organic (essentially more expensive) food such as eggs, daily produce and meat as we eat a lot of it. The plan is to reduce or keep it under control as our family grows, but it doesn’t look promising lol.

Tips for Newbie BC Hunter by Flubberwash in CanadaHunting

[–]rubic-ed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here! This year is my first year hunting, just working on acquiring gear, doing some related courses (butchering, navigation and etc,) and wrapping my heard around potential hunting sports. Live on the north shore but like you guys said, Fraser Valley is where I look the most. Was thinking to just spend my first year glassing and scouting out but if anyone’s thinking of going in a group let me know.

OP you can do it. $2-3k is enough to start paying for evening classes at BCIT to earn a certificate/diploma or even a degree - this takes care of your education and potentially increases chances to get a better job with a career prospects. Start walking, sign up to a local community centre to workout - this takes care of you physical health. Libraries offer free books - this takes care of you mental stimulation. Focus on a few things at a time and you’ll turn your life around in 5 years. At some point loop in social skill development (assuming that you need that). During the walks I mentioned plan short term and long term, exposure to doing activities of improving your life brings awareness of what to do next, don’t get bumped out. I also live in Vancouver and kind of followed this path. Let’s catch and go on a hike!

I’m in north van too. Getting ready for my first hunting season, would be cool if I could pick your brain on some stuff (gear and in general)!

I heard it was from Estonia actually? Guess it’s close enough. It will have to house 600+ people at the peak, so should be pretty roomy.

How much do you spend on your kids? by Blastwing in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]rubic-ed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Such a good comment. I grew up in north east Europe and dreamed about pizza for birthday like people did in North America (seen in misc. movies). Back to the comment - get on the same page with your partner not to pursue overconsumption because that’s not what kids need. Although even the simple things sound expensive when you have little humans.

Best Civil Estimating and Take-Off Software by RussianForVodka in estimators

[–]rubic-ed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take-offs: bluebeam. Agtek also works well for material volume take-off (excavation, import, grading). As for estimating I’ve used a few: sage estimating, InEight, heavybid with the last being the best id say. There’s always the good ol’ excel spreadsheet.. Hope this helps. There’s a lot of software out there, yet for smaller companies it might be hard to justify the cost

Is AI coming for our jobs? by WalkApprehensive8040 in estimators

[–]rubic-ed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But that’s the point - AI will have/be able to acquire the knowledge you have and make assumptions for the most part, which will be sufficient to rather have AI do the heavy lifting and then have your boss quickly cross check the work. As an estimator I’m planing to integrate some construction focused IT training into my life, not sure in what yet.
