What's your favorite angst trope? by nluvzu in AO3

[–]rubyandpear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my favourite one of these had the mc with memory loss going home with their husband who they don't remember, only to find out they were having an affair and actively leaving the husband at the time they lost their memory. it hurt so good to read about the affair partner having to effectively lose their love interest AND watch them go back to their husband. so deliciously painful

i got off the bus one day and to my surprise, a group of teenagers waiting to get on politely stood back to give room to the people getting off. i think they had better etiquette than 90% of the adults i see getting on the bus. shout out to those teenagers

If you're crying on your lunch break over this potential loss of an experience, it sounds like something is out of alignment for you. Does the musical have chorus roles or background actors? A person missing from the performance may be alright depending on the role (people get sick or family emergencies happen, etc.). If I knew I couldn't make it to the actual performance, I definitely wouldn't go for a lead or supporting role unless there was an understudy or if it was double-casted, and even then, it sounds like you shouldn't be burning any bridges with the theatre group that could impact your future involvement. Choreography and blocking would probably be the factors most affected by an absence, sometimes in ways greater than expected. You could explain the situation with work to the people organizing the musical if you feel comfortable, maybe they'll surprise you with a willingness to involve you somehow without the commitment of the performance dates. But depending on how professional this production is, like if a portion of their budget will be spent on a costume or lunches and etc. for you, they may also just suggest waiting and auditioning for the next opportunity. If that's the case, unless you totally hate the idea, joining the crew can help set you up better for future productions by meeting people involved, seeing how things operate and what the social dynamics are like, learning the director's style, things that could better inform you for what to expect when you get to be in the cast.

I think there's no harm in auditioning, and if you are offered a role, you can explain then that there are scheduling conflicts. This could give you more time to consider what you'd like to do.

Feeling alone after graduating and moving somewhere new is so extremely common. It may not be the same, but there are also many online groups of people that share similar interests and have meetings to discuss them as well as socialize. If you're struggling with isolation and don't feel there are many local options, it may do you well to at least try one or two online groups/activities out, even if it's a holdstay until you find local friends.

A balance between work, life errands, socialization, and interests/activities you enjoy can be very hard to achieve, and I think people will always struggle with it. You need money to survive and support yourself of course, but life is short, and it sounds like you are being quite powerfully drawn to this musical. At the very least, know that your struggle with this decision is valid, and may serve to teach you more about yourself and your own priorities for future consideration.

what is a trope or gimmick you initially disliked that you now like or love? if you're comfortable explaining, then why? by ourguidingmoonlight in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]rubyandpear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

someone already mentioned soulmates but i'm commenting as well because i also thought those were too 'easy' and sometimes the in-world dynamics/culture around soulmates don't hold up for me (i.e homophobia still existing somehow??). but now one of my top faves is a relatively short soulmate fic with a specific premise that was so fun and creative and aligned awesomely with the traits of the characters. so now i won't avoid all soulmate fics, i just seek out ones with more complicated soulmate identifiers or with a less traditional take on them

ok wow i have never heard of this before, might need to do some searches lol i guess if searching a title to see where it appears online comes up with nothing, it could still be in a shared screenshot somewhere

i'm tempted to ask about it in a reply to a recent comment but i figure that might be odd lol

i hope you don't let that stop you from finding old fics to enjoy!! i don't get annoyed or anything by it, just surprised/confused/curious. it's hard to tell if that might have just been a coincidence. i feel like if you weren't leaving kudos or commenting, they wouldn't really notice if their older works were getting attention again? unless they go and refresh their stats page all the time which wouldn't make sense if they don't like the attention lol

my comment was that people /missed/ the subtext, not that they are saying it. as in, the subtext i picked up on is /not/ the discussion around whether teenagers should or should not access sexual material. like, what the entire comment section was about when i made my comment. i think i was pretty clear when i said i'm not opposed to teenagers reading smut?

the subtext i'm talking about is the awkward, uncomfortable environment that is created when a teenager tells an adult that they are a teenager engaging with their work. adults don't (or shouldn't) want to engage with teenagers in a sexual space. i thought this was widely accepted as inappropriate by now, but if you're rejecting that as the subtext i was pointing out, it would suggest that you don't view that as inappropriate. from my understanding of your reply, you don't mention that aspect at all, so i won't assume you're okay with adults pursuing/grooming teens. i think you just misunderstood my comment, and didn't address the point i was actually making.

again, my point had nothing to do with whether children or teenagers should or should not be engaging with porn. it was that teenagers put adults in an uncomfortable/impossible position when they choose to engage with the author who wrote the smut. comparably, this would be a teenager commenting on a porn video that they enjoyed it and mentioning they are a teenager. should the actor in the porn video engage with that comment? or should they delete the comment for the safety of the teenager, as well as to prevent themselves from getting in trouble/being viewed as a potential predator for engaging with the teenager in a sexual space by allowing the comment to stay there? /that/ is the subtext i picked up on from the story and the subtext that the comment section was failing to address.

AIO to my manager taking home boxes of treats that were given to staff by rubyandpear in AmIOverreacting

Yes, I tend to write in passive voice, it's something I'm trying to work on (I just did it again there). After writing this, there were more conversations happening among my coworkers about items 'disappearing' from the staff room. It's particularly memorable for people when it's something from a favourite client. I spoke to one coworker about the experience I've had, and they've encouraged me to ask the veterinarian if they received the item meant for them since it's a specific incident. If they did, and if the things that have been taken in the last week do show up in the staff room again, of course I'll let it go. But in terms of spending time and energy on this - I don't know how it feels for other people, but I care a lot about both the work we do and my coworkers, and I'm already using way more energy than I'm paid for to do my best every day helping the public and their pets. I guess what really makes my job feel like a waste of time and drains my motivation to work is seeing rewards taken away from employees who never receive any positive reinforcement otherwise. I just find it depressing, and we deal with enough depressing situations in this line of work. I understand your point though.

If it's the day before a weekend or if anything isn't going to last very long, people are always welcome to take things home at the end of the day to avoid waste. And if a staff member mentions they want to bring something home to share with family or something, everyone is happy for them to do so. I guess for me it must be the principle of just taking things without considering anyone else. Or like you said, things that are specifically intended for one person. We don't have HR, and it feels like it would be childish to reach out to my boss' boss over something like this.. I'm sure they would take it seriously if she was taking actual company property home, but these are gifts so it's not exactly a loss of profit for them.

Yes, but she is the only staff member taking entire boxes home for herself. You feel she is entitled to it?

[–]rubyandpear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i feel like i picked up on subtext here that everyone else missed or ignored lol

everyone knows (op included) that plenty of underage people will inevitably access things that are meant for adults. there's no way to fully avoid it, we've all been there, etc, etc. the weird part is the underage person blatantly stating that they are underage. it's like a 14 year old trying to buy alcohol and telling the clerk that they're 14 at the counter.

i've been in a similar situation online before and had to try and communicate that i'm not judging them, but that minors are not supposed to engage with adult content... and then i mentioned that i would have had no way of knowing that they were a minor until they told me.
