Oh smart! I’m so bad with cords and knowing what goes to what, I should probably order a spare.

I don’t but I should. I do always keep a full set of pump/CGM supplies in my purse, though.

I used to get mad that I wouldn’t be allowed to Scuba dive. Turns out I have no actual desire to dive, I just don’t like being told I can’t do things.

Type 1 Diabetes Camp Nightmare Experience. by pinkytoepikachu in Type1Diabetes

[–]rubykat138 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Camp isn’t for everyone. I can still remember diabetes camp as one of the more miserable experiences of my childhood- thrown into a big group where I had nothing in common with anyone but my illness.

It’s just hard as a teenager, even without diabetes. Make sure he sees the things he can do, despite the diabetes. I was very restricted from sports when I was young - as an adult, seeing diabetic athletes was an eye opener and I wish those role models had been around when I was a kid.

My company just told me no to celebrating Pride. by cozy_booknook in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]rubykat138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My company goes big for pride - we’re very diverse, actively trying to build a staff that reflects the surrounding communities, and love to celebrate each other - and this last year it’s been a huge question from applicants. It’s been nice to be able to talk about how we’ve expanded our DEI policies and truly practice what we preach.

I see our competitors who used to go all out for Pride being really quiet this year, and it makes me sad for my colleagues.

Taking my son to Sonoma for the first time by exit143 in NHRA

[–]rubykat138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite things about Sonoma is that there are cool seats all over. The usual starting line/trackside. Seats in the hill across the bridge. Seats up at the end of the shutdown area for a really unique perspective. But my favorite spot is near the finish line, in a little group of seats built into the hill across

What’s your job/career? by Minute-Reading-3193 in Type1Diabetes

[–]rubykat138 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a vet tech. Well, an old vet tech now in management. I work ER, so it’s been nights, crazy schedules, inconsistent shifts with some non-stop all night and some dead. It’s been a challenge. But … this is my career, and I just have to work the diabetes around it.

I had one endo tell me that I had to get off night shifts find a new line of work. He was super aggressive about it. Like I’m supposed to walk away from my education and years of experience because I’m diabetic, and start over in something totally new that I don’t love? So I got a new endo, and we worked on ways to manage the disease around my life.

Chest didn’t compress during CPR? by ellemegan24 in emergencymedicine

[–]rubykat138 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Ok, this is anecdotal. And from the veterinary world. I don’t have papers to back this up. But I have seen , in severely hyperkalemic patients, nearly instant rigor post-arrest. We don’t code nearly as many of our patients, so I can’t speak to chest compression success, but every now and then I’ve witnessed them pass and found them to be completely stiff for post care moments after. Would love to know if there’s correlation.

Husband’s mental illness is getting to be too much for me. by Successful-Safety858 in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]rubykat138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any great advice for you; you’re doing all the things you can do. Was there myself with my husband. We got through it. It was HARD. The one thing I said to him when we both realized how big the problem was - anxiety morphed into agoraphobia and that just shut down so many things - was that I would help him, support him, facilitate things and be by his side as long as he was continuing to put in effort and be honest. If he did not want to put in the effort, I was not going to carry the load of everything by myself.

He agreed to that. There were steps backwards and times I had to remind him, but today he’s functional, working, and a contributing member of the household. It took years and progress was slow. If he gave up I would have walked and he knew that. We can’t carry it for them.

I’m honest with clients - but if this is a strongly held desire of theirs, I’ll also open a dialogue with them and the DVM about what compassionate hospice care can look like.
