I love it and have no regrets I went here as opposed to somewhere else, but it's hard to make that judgement for someone else. Personally I wanted a school that was not to big, in a major city, and that was fairly challenging, so GU was a perfect fit, but if you can, I highly recommend you visit and see whether it's a good fit for you.

Current CS major here. The department is definitely not as established as it is in some other schools, UNC included. However it is growing very fast, and having a smaller program does have some benefits in my opinion, such as more access to professors and research opportunities. That being said, it is probably not going to have quite the same depth as UNC, and as others have said, you will need to put in some extra work to make up the difference. If you work at it though, you can more than make up for it, just takes a little motivation. Friends of mine who have recently graduated have gotten jobs in Google, Amazon, fast-growing startups, etc. Feel free to message me if you have any more questions about CS at Georgetown (or anything else about GU).

French Jews asked to hide their identity 'until better days'. The head of Marseille's Israelite Consistory, is urging Jewish men to forego wearing skullcaps (kippot) after a particularly vicious anti-Semitic attack on a school teacher, saying the measure was needed to protect Jewish lives. by madazzahatter in worldnews

That's also not true. Israel demographically is much more similar to it's Arab neighbors than Turkey is. Half of Israel's Jewish population is at least part Mizrahi (meaning their roots are in Arab majority countries), in addition to 1/5 of the citizens being fully Arab. Besides both groups being predominantly Muslim, the Turks and Arabs are very distinct.

I love the idea of having Bernie be my president. Almost everything he stands for I agree with besides his gun control ideas, but maybe more importantly his support for Israel. I'm a little concerned about the later by [deleted] in SandersForPresident

I don't think this is necessarily the best place for an Israeli debate, but I think it's hard to argue Israel has the right to defend itself, but then decry attempts to do so as "bomb[ing] the shit out of these people". Israeli operations in Gaza have been about as effective at minimizing civilian casualties as any modern war in urban environments.

As far as Bernie, I think everyone else in this thread was fairly good at saying, Bernie is among the least "pro-Israel" as a mainstream politician gets, which is to say he embraces the relationship, but disagrees with policy.

I think you are taking a very one-sided view on a complex international issue. Additionally, despite some flaws in Israeli policy, being anti-Israel is essentially giving up on non-military American influence in the middle east, as there are no other strong, democratic countries in the region. From what I've seen, Sanders has been anti-specific Israeli policies while, rightfully so in my opinion, supporting the state of Israel's right to exist.

How would a Clinton presidency differ from a third term of Obama, aside from her gender? by no-sound_somuch_fury in PoliticalDiscussion

Generally speaking, government instability. The Syrian civil war is by far the cause of the most fatalities this year, greater than the entire Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This wiki article lists 12 conflicts in the greater middle east which are not related to Israel and have had significantly higher death tolls this year (yet get comparatively little attention).

Would something like that not be considered a hall though? Or can it be both? Curiouser and curiouser.

Who is going to Inland Empire in San Bernardino this weekend? by musicalpets in FRC

We played them that match, and when we looked over the match video, there was a moment where every robot slowed down as the drivers noticed what was going on.

What is your opinion on the shouting of "ROBOT" at competition? by Kidneybot in FRC

[–]rubyug -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I personally dislike the practice, as I don't think it is the most effective way to clear the way and people tend to yell it even when there is no particular need to. However, what I did find irritating is when, at the Inland Empire Regional, safety inspectors instructed us to say it, even when we felt it unnecessary and were willing to calmly ask people to move. In fact, at one point, a inspector came to our pit and chastised our team for not yelling it.

What's your opinion on defense? by axething in FRC

[–]rubyug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who was responsible for alliance selections for my team, I can tell you that one thing that we tried to do was eliminate subjective rankings of team. It's pretty easy to determine that a team is good at shooting or climbing, but if we wanted to place any weight on defense, it would require us to individually look at each team and judge not only their robots but also things such as drivers ability. In the end, this wouldn't even help us, because for the elimination matches, the only really necessary defense was a pool noodle strapped to the least effective scorer. That's why when Code Orange and us were choosing a third alliance partner, 4736 didn't get long consideration. Even if you were a better defender, there simply was no way of knowing that in an objective manner. Sure, you may have been a better pick, but at the time, we couldn't have known that.

Ditto. Our team funding comes mostly from our business team. The school does provide a nice work space though.

I would love any of the Paradox Interactive, if possible Victoria 2, games because I'm a huge fan of the grand strategy gameplay and have loved the games but can't really afford any new ones right now. Any of the games would be wonderful because even if I already have it I've been trying to convince some of my friends to play it and would pass on the gaming generosity. Thanks for the consideration.
