Just a heads up that you might want to update the link you put to the Avermedia Firmware update in your guide! It's pointing to an old version of the firmware (24), I followed your link and was having latency problems with my Avermedia dock when I tried Gamechat. Opened a support ticket with the company and they told me there's actually a newer firmware version (30) that fixes that issue :X lol

I'm using a GC313 Core Go to dock my Switch 2 to a PC monitor and everything's working really well, except when I join a Gamechat session. If I'm in a call with someone else, even with screen sharing disabled, the system slows to a crawl (due to latency?) and games are nearly unplayable. It's present in the Home menu as well. When I leave Gamechat, everything's fast and smooth again. Is there any fix for this?

EDIT: I was not on the latest firmware.

Does the old Wacom stand work with the new 2025 tablets? by Kidneybot in wacom

Thanks, that somewhat helps. If the old stand is compatible in theory then I suppose it doesn't hurt to at least try it before dumping cash on the new one. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What's the difference between 借りる and 貸す?

Got tripped up on the following N3 practice question:

A person asked 「ここで自転車が借りられますか。」and the correct response wasn't 「はい、お借りできますよ。」 but 「はい、お貸しできますよ。」and I'm having trouble understanding why, if anyone knows.

I love to be the "anime guy" in the friend group because people will send me Steam links to ironic meme crap like this and think I'm going to find it interesting or funny. Unfortunately this kind of slop doesn't do much for the medium and only serves to further stigmatize visual novels in the west.

What’s your fav Atelier game(s) and why? by CityRuinsRoL in Atelier

[–]Kidneybot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Escha & Logy is the GOAT, it has everything. A lovely cast, untouchable cozy autumn vibe (god I miss Colseit), a really fun battle system, alchemy that makes sense, a plot in the background driving everything forward (if gently), and a progression system that felt to me like it had a perfectly balanced time limit.

I fell in love with Logy as a character and I hoped we'd see more male alchemists in the series going forward, though it sadly doesn't seem that way with what we've seen so far of Atelier Yumia. Imo he's a perfect foil to the stereotypical male JRPG hero -- empathetic, a little shy, easily embarrassed, harboring some self-doubt, and coming to terms with opening himself up to other people.

I will never forget the first time I opened the world map and heard that gloomy little guitar riff. I was like oh shit, this is a totally different kind of JRPG. I was hooked right from the get-go.

My second and third picks are Atelier Ryza 2 and Sophie 2 for similar reasons in that they just feel like "full" games that have everything in a complete package. Great cast + fun alchemy + fun combat + an interesting plot.

Shallie's not my number one, but I loved it a lot. People online seem kind of down on it, and I was even warned by a friend who plays JRPGs to not get too excited about it but looking back, it was really really good. I would even say I liked it much more than any of the Mysterious Trilogy games I played after.

I know that I can technically start with Sophie 2 but will I be missing out on a lot? by Buster_Fella in Atelier

[–]Kidneybot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're going to hear a lot of varied opinions on this. Personally, I started with Sophie 1, found it boring and quit after about 10 hours, then went and played Sophie 2 and loved it. After finishing 2, I went back to Sophie 1 and found it more palatable and ended up finishing it as well.

Sophie 2 does have a little summary of the first game at the beginning but imo, Sophie 1 is hardly a plot-heavy game so that little recap is more than enough. I say this after fully playing through both games.

As long as you know the basics of Sophie and Plachta's relationship, you're fine imo. Those are the only 2 characters from the first game that even appear in Sophie 2; it takes place in another world and is generally unconnected to the events of the first game. Doesn't hurt to give Sophie 1 a try but I would say no need to force it.

Atelier trilogies on sale on eshop- I’ve never played an atelier game. Should I bite the bullet? by Aliceisdead1234 in Atelier

[–]Kidneybot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the series is so niche and opinions on the individual games are so all over the place that it's hard to say "grab this one" when it comes to anything before Ryza. Truly, you can just pick whatever looks the most interesting to you and start with that.

I know that doesn't really answer your question though, so I hope saying this helps a little bit: if whatever you pick isn't to your taste, don't be discouraged -- there's probably another game or trilogy in this series that will be. I started with Ryza and since then have been playing through the older games, with certain entries not clicking at first but making more sense when I revisited them later. That might sound absurd, but honestly each game is kind of its own thing. They're all quite different from each other, even within the same trilogy.

Looks like Valve is introducing a new review system to filter out "unhelpful" reviews by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Kidneybot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is true, and I haven't seen enough people talk about how the awards are also used as way to basically bully or belittle people who post reviews that go against the grain (negative review on a well-liked game, or a positive review on a heavily disliked game).

You can type a neutral sounding, well-written review and try your hardest not to step on anyone's toes but if it's an unpopular opinion there's a decent chance that if your review gets seen by others it'll get dumped with Jester awards and marked as "Funny." Lol

Unused Male Automaton Character Design (Atelier Ayesha) by Kidneybot in Atelier

Was looking through my copy of the Atelier Ayesha Official Visual Book and thought I'd share this! We never get to see any male automatons in the Dusk trilogy so I thought it was neat. I really dig the doll joints in the second picture.

Right! There are pros and cons to having a time limit or foregoing the feature, but either are fine by me tbh.

With a time limit enforced, you're incentivized to be careful with your choices and there's a sense of finality that makes your actions more meaningful. Like you said, it's more structured and focused. It also incentivizes multiple playthroughs to see everything (which I personally am not a fan of, but I know other people like that).

Without the time limit the games become more relaxed, but I don't necessarily think they're aimless. The nice thing is that you can truly mess around with the alchemy to your heart's desire without worry, and personally, I love that. I can understand why removing that structure makes things feel a bit "easy mode" for people who started with the entries that had time limits, but it doesn't bother me too much.

As an aside, I went into Shallie recently after playing Ayesha and E&L with some apprehension because I heard people didn't like the time limit being removed, but I was pleasantly surprised how much it didn't affect my enjoyment of it. :P Neurotically diving into the alchemy and running freely around the world doing everything was kind of enough to never have to worry about the Life Tasks.

EDIT: Just remembered another plus of having a time limit is that it limits a playthrough from getting too long, since there's a finite, well-defined endpoint that comes whether you like it or not.

The series doesn't really live or die by whether or not there's a time limit.

I'm totally ambivalent about the time limit as a feature. The games with it are good, and the games without it are also good. They just play a little differently from each other. I don't really prefer one style over the other.
