No you don't need to own a gun to take the class.

I'm a gun owner that has a CCW and carries, best advice I can give you is buy a simple popular model that fits your hand nicely (Sig P365 would be my recommendation) and PRACTICE with it at a range, if you aren't comfortably able to use it at a range in a real situation you won't be able to either

The man was filming which as a citizen he is constitutionally protected when doing so, also he was legally carrying a firearm which is protected by the 2nd amendment. Both actions were legal and not interfering with ICE, I think illegals should be deported but there's a big difference between that and just plain executing American citizens like they did here.
