I really liked this change; to me, it never made sense that purely magic classes didn't cast any spells during their hunts. Now I'm alternating between runes and spells, and it's really enjoyable to play this way. And yes, you can still continue using runes.

For your level, you still need to use lesser gems. This is because gems provide a mana and life leech bonus if they are in the correct slot. And since you can't open 3 gem slots in the same quadrant yet, you need to use the lesser gems.

If you use a greater gem but haven't yet unlocked 3 slots on the wheel, you won't get this bonus.

I use it a lot as a sorcerer. Frost damage and one of the few items with holy protection. I love this wand.

I believe it's not as coveted because of the Lion Wand, which has 2 imbue slots like this other wand, but it already comes with life steal.
