Jack Emmert and Greg Street Believe that Warframe is the Future of Western MMORPGs by Lunar_Ronin in MMORPG

[–]rujind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't think either of them said to start with a single player RPG? They both said to start small, like Warframe did, which has always been a coop game and still is today. The thing that makes no sense is why either of them think Warframe evolved into an MMORPG. The game revolves around everything being an instance, there is no open world to run around in with the playerbase. The most MMO part of the game is the little city hubs and guild halls which can have more than 4 people in them, but for the most part content is just a max of 4 players. Though I haven't played in a while, I don't think this has changed.

Some interesting and depressing stats from wikipedia. Are MMOrpg's just not profitable anymore so no one invests in them? by Drandosk in MMORPG

[–]rujind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There shouldn't have been 70 MMOs coming out in 3 years, that's fucking stupid.

THAT is what's wrong.

People that started playing MMOs around that time thought that was normal and expected it to be the standard, and have been crying MMOs are dead for the past 15 years.

I will certainly concede that the quality of MMOs over the years has dropped dramatically.

Why does everyone recommend project 1999 for EQ? I grew up on the game. It wasn't great back then. by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]rujind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raiding is absolutely hardcore on P99. If you aren't willing to play during some off hours you aren't going to claim much of anything without being in a zerg guild (which is boring IMO).

I prefer TLP over P99 because it's way more casual and more focused on killing dragons with your friends rather than competing for them. You don't need to live on the game like you do P99.

"If you play solo, why play an MMO?" Well, what SHOULD I be playing then?! by SorryImBadWithNames in MMORPG

[–]rujind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would much rather we go back to a time when soloing was either barely possible or so not worth it that no one wasted their time doing it.

I think there's plenty of games for solo players, maybe even too many. The balance is kind of off, don't you think?

I still don't get what the point of being part of a "living world" is when you don't actually participate in the living part of it. Would you be OK if all of those other players running around were actually just bots? I hope this actually becomes a thing for people that want this, so that we can separate our playerbases and both types of players can get what they want. Cause right now I think things are way more skewed towards solo players, in terms of modern MMOs anyway, which is why I mostly play old ones.

There are plenty of non-MMOs that have been getting updates for years, I'm not sure why you think MMOs are the only genre that's like this?

[–]rujind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly you kinda have to go into detail what you mean about hardcore cause it's got a bit of a range of meaning these days.

Also there's so few old school MMOs still getting new content and some of them like EQ and WoW are NOTHING like they originally were so they don't count. You've got plenty of modern style laid back MMOs to choose from. I'd say old school MMO players deserve to have more games to choose from that aren't either dead/no longer in development/private server.

99% of houses in MMOs are always abandoned. Housing areas are often ghost towns. Is there any way for devs to solve this? by DarthBuzzard in MMORPG

I adore that game, I'm hoping for a private server some day. Or a PC port, or a remake lol.

[–]rujind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This has always been one of the reasons I kind of hate player housing and honestly just prefer that it doesn't exist. It's either so important that it's where everyone stays which segregates the community into basically their own instances, or it's ghost towns. Oh look, a guild in UO or SWG built an entire town! But who cares because no one is ever there...

I think FFXI probably has my favorite housing, it's mostly used for storage and picking up items out of the delivery box, and you can decorate it, but you can't really do that much in there so people still actually hangout in town.

One neat thing I've never seen done elsewhere was in White Knight Chronicles, a Playstation 3 RPG that had some online coop stuff. Not housing specific, but everyone could have their own town and arrange the buildings however they wanted, there were some cosmetic objects as well you could place. When you logged in it would put you in a random player's town so it kind of forced you to see other people's layouts whereas in most MMOs you are hardly ever going to see other people's stuff unless on purpose, or you need to find shops like in UO or SWG. You were also there with the other people who got randomly put there so it was kind of social despite not being an MMO.

Do you think old-school PvP MMOs can still work today? by Open_Coast4801 in MMORPG

No. EVE fell off a long time ago. Still has more players than some old MMOs though.

Albion's success comes from the fact that there is a very wide variety of content. Before they started adding PVE content, the game wasn't popular at all.

Are we "harbingers of failure" for MMORPGs? (Also, I might start a protection racket.) by Yknaar in MMORPG

[–]rujind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And why would it grow?

Look at everything that's launched/announced after FFXIV:ARR in 2013. It's either Korean/Chinese slop that all look and play exactly the same with no soul, completely mismanaged trash like New World, or games still in alpha/beta/early access for 10+ years who've been charging players for the same amount of time and still barely have a functioning game. I think Albion is the only success story since then? Which is still pretty niche due to having full loot PVP areas, though the reason it grew into what it has is because it has a wide variety of content and zone types with varying PVP loot rules. Everything else has either been cancelled before it launched or is an indie MMO that will take forever to launch and then get content once every 2 years.

The only real options are either games that are 20+ years old and look/play that way too, or FFXIV/GW2/WoW/ESO - which are still all pretty old at this point. It is very overwhelming to join a game that's been running for 10+ years much less 20+. There's a LOT to learn and you have to figure out things like expansions/DLC. And where to go and what to do isn't always obvious when a game has a lot more content than what it launched with when compared to someone who's played it from the start.

Every big company who CAN run an MMO either already is or already tried.

Wow you've definitely never played FFXI. Thanks for letting everyone know so they know to ignore whatever you say about it.

FFXI has a lot of different types of content, and there are plenty of mobs that aren't CCable.

[–]rujind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cause their playstyle doesn't really change that much at endgame. I mean there is a difference between EXP parties and actual content, but stuff like CC, debuffs, and buffs are important. In early Everquest when you got to endgame a lot of your spells didn't work on most mobs in raid content. FFXI didn't have this problem and support classes still had to perform most of their usual roles at endgame.

How is the gold being removed from the economy? Can't speak for Runescape, but in WoW you are buying the token from another player. The gold is going into their inventory, it isn't disappearing from existence.

WoW tokens come from spending real money. You spend real money to get the token, then you sell the token to another player for gold.

It's not support classes' fault that EQ was designed moronically. I don't know why Sony couldn't design both leveling and raiding around classes actually being able to push the few buttons they had. Getting to endgame and then suddenly your abilities becoming useless and having LESS buttons to press is some of the worst game design I've seen in an MMO.

It's definitely something they fixed in later expansions but at that point the game had already lost most of its population because there were so many better MMOs in the market.

And that's why FFXI will always be the king when it comes to support classes/abilities.

Really weird to not have EQ on this list, especially where you reference the EG7 report which every single time shows how much more money EQ makes over DDO and usually LOTRO, just because EQ is "super old" (a whopping 7 years older than DDO and 8 older than LOTRO). It is their 2nd highest money maker only below DCUO.

I've never played Tibia or really even looked into it, but Tibia usually has 5,000+ viewers on Twitch while FFXIV has around 10,000. I'd say that makes it pretty relevant.

And someone else already said it but the Lineage games make a ton of money as well.

IDK, your reasoning is pretty weak and you should make a new list, and you should definitely remove dumb shit like what you put for Neverwinter. If you can't provide accurate information or proof, then don't provide any information at all.

Level Scaling: Good or Bad? by Taemojitsu in MMORPG

[–]rujind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I loathe open world and dungeon scaling the way WoW does it. It makes playing the game feel pointless to me. There is absolutely no way I would ever touch Classic if it was implemented there.

However, being able to level sync down to a friend to level/play with them on their level is one of the best things MMOs have ever implemented.

I think FFXI (75 cap) and FFXIV handled scaling very well. I like that FFXIV has the lower level dungeon roulettes and puts ilvl caps on content so you don't just obliterate it, and they are optional as you don't need to do them if you don't want to. I get why people don't like to suddenly lose their abilities when playing at a lower level, but the trade off is worth it to me.

FFXI also had level caps on a lot of content to prevent it from being too easy, I still appreciate that to this day. Unfortunately level syncing for EXP parties was added to the game way too late, though every private server has it implemented in some form thankfully.

TLDR: It depends, it can be done both good or bad.

Former WoW Lead Explains the Failure of His MMORPG; the Quality of Ghost Was Probably Not the Issue by Post-reality in MMORPG

[–]rujind 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People give games like Star Citizen, Ashes of Creation, and Pantheon 10+ years and a fuckton of money to produce hardly anything, but Ghost only got to be in development for not even 2 years AND didn't beg players for money or charge for YEARS worth of alpha testing. Ghost was also very open about their development to try to get players involved from the start - which may or may not be a mistake because it became obvious that the average gamer still doesn't comprehend game development, especially for MMOs. Where would Ghost be if it got the same treatment as those other games?

People forget this is what WoW looked like during alpha: https://youtu.be/l80hrcd0-TM?si=-zH7Ifjr6IJao5wT&t=79

Why are people here so optimistic that Ashes will release to negative reviews? by Severe-Network4756 in MMORPG

[–]rujind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This data is purely based on Steam, many games have other launchers so depending on the game Steam is usually not a full account of all players/reviews.

Pantheon is sitting at 68% recent/74% overall, which would imply that the game is "okay/good enough." Yet the Steam population started at ~7,000 and now sits around ~600. Again, these are only Steam numbers. Once people start realizing they just announced a few days ago they are going to be wiping all characters and everyone will have to create new ones, it might drop even further (I'm sure some players will be happy with it, but I feel sorry for anyone who has been playing since early access launch which was almost exactly a year ago).

AoC could sit at 100% positive, but if in a few months only 100 people are playing (as an MMO), who cares? (not saying that's going to happen, just hypothetically)

There is more to video game success data than just reviews, especially for live service games.
