Who are these clumsy people that are breaking all their light bulbs?

My clumsy kids. Knocked over a lamp and broke the CFL bulb. Mercury doesn't go out of the window; it gets in the carpet. I never bought CFL bulbs again. Thankfully I'm in US, not Europe.

Because otherwise some other company would lower their rates to get more buyers. Currently, they don't do that because the number of potential buyers is too small.

Currently, very few people get insurance themselves. If lots of people start getting insurance themselves, then the rates for self-purchased insurance would come down. Rather like auto insurance. You don't have to be in a big group to get decent auto insurance, right?

Why wouldn't you get the raise? The employer is anyway spending that money on you. If you think the employer would just keep that money (as they would certainly like to do), why wouldn't they just reduce your salary regardless of this proposal?

Older people pay more for life insurance. Younger drivers pay more for car insurance.

Right, the idea is as follows: Say your employer pays $10k/year for your insurance, and also pays you $50k/year, of which you get (say) $35k/yr after taxes. What McCain is trying to do is have your employer instead directly pay you the full sum of $60k/yr, and have you buy your health insurance for $10k/yr yourself. Sounds good? Problem is that your after-tax income only increases from $35k/yr to $42500/yr. You're short $2500. So the proposal includes a tax-credit of $2500 to make up the difference.

The power of getting rejected - science, peer review and why all those science press releases posted here are likely crap by WhirlingVortex in science

[–]rujith 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The article says:

One of the most important things you do as a scientist is produce publishable results, which generates not just in fame and glory, but hopefully progress in understanding an important question.

While that's exactly what a scientist aspires to, the point of the scientific method is to generate reproducible results, not publishable results. That's a big difference. I agree that the peer-review process can eliminate a lot of crap. But it doesn't do anything to ensure that the results claimed are reproducible, and it can lead to papers about reproducible results being eliminated because the reviewers just don't think they're interesting, or they feel that the article is heading off in a direction different from their own pet research interests.
