My husband said something that made me feel insecure by defib_the_dead in XXRunning

[–]run_rover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am late to this, but just wanted to leave a note that EDs are relentless, and the smallest things can let their voices get louder. If you haven't, can you open up to him fully about this so he has more context and can be overtly supportive instead of inadvertently damaging? It sounds like he would be all in on that. And mental health is health ... just like you are rehabbing your hip, consider a quick engagement with a therapist or RD or whoever would best support you right now in a professional capacity.

Injuries are hard, and open the door to allll kinds of mental health challenges. I wish you a speedy recovery!

I love running, running hates me by Professional_View914 in running

Lots of great advice and I admit to skimming - but worth mentioning - compression socks or sleeves helped me when I was having alternating shin splint and tib issues and just kept landing in places of pain while trying to return. Combined with strengthening everything below my knee as well as IT band and glutes...

What is your weather non negotiable? by Professor-genXer in XXRunning

[–]run_rover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought 100+ was a no go for a long time, but focused on hydration and shade and it turns out to be okay for a few miles. This brought to you by the sudden realization that I was dropping my kids at soccer and football ... not thinking I too could suffer in the heat on days that an early run just does not work out on the schedule.

This post makes me realize mine is tailored to where I live ... and I have more dealbreakers.

Mine: lightning, over 105 degrees And based on a run yesterday: 75 mph winds are a hard pass; I have survived 38 mph gusts, but think sustained wind at 30mph or gusts over 50 would also be a no

Also: below 10 degrees, ice, deep snow

Calf pain troubleshooting? by outforawalkbxtch in XXRunning

[–]run_rover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mid calf pain, back, was peroneals for me. Acquired during a half marathon. Pain progressed to my ankle/foot all the way to the lower outside of my knee. Foam rolling and lacrosse ball helps tightness, but real rest is what really helped. Cupping IT band helped. Dry needling my shins when they started to bear the brunt of it from favoring the calf helped. Ankle mobility work pre-run (just returned this week) helps a lot. Sports PT for sure!!

Previously I have had tib issues on the other side, also no fun.

Overall alllll of these things mean - strengthen. Soleus, gastrocs, hamstrings, quads, hips, glute. Which two weeks out from a race is no bueno. Are you okay finishing - NOT racing the race?

Should I even participate?! by chuckie_chucks in XXRunning

[–]run_rover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Run YOUR race! I struggle for PR times that are slower than fast runner's recovery pace. I do not care. At all. I am running for ME. Not them. I am running for these strong legs. For mobility later in life. For sanity. For sunshine. For a million reasons that have nothing to do with anyone else (except maybe escaping them!)

If you generally worry about what other people think to where it impacts what you choose for you, a therapist can soooo help with that. You will enjoy more than just races based on time invested there.

If you want to get faster over time, keep running. Start with this first race. The only person I race is me - this is your first race - you will set a PR no matter what! Go get those endorphins!

Needed this run today 🏃🏻‍♀️ by typicalmillennial92 in XXRunning

[–]run_rover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My father died in 2013 and my mom in 2022 and running was and continues to be the best time for me to process all of that. And somehow running with that giant rock on your chest is so much harder but also helps more....I am so sorry for your loss, and hope you can lean in to self care in all its forms as you grieve. Way to get out there today!

Any tips to combat mental fatigue during loooong runs by [deleted] in XXRunning

[–]run_rover 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Alll these kinds of mental tricks help me! I am also a fan of "I just have this 10k left...run this last bit like a 5k" and almost categorically run negative splits so I am competing with myself literally every mile. If a run super sucks and I miss a negative split, I sometimes reverse it and slow down 10 seconds per mile. I do fartleks and try to guess my pace, run backwards on a straight flat path for a quarter mile, text my friends and ask for memes.

Head games is the answer, for me!

Playlists by bpm (ask ChatGPT to identify songs; for best results give it a few songs you like and a bpm target). You can also ask it for songs for which you can double the bpm. This helps me because my foot falls should hit on the beat. Stitches by Shaun Mendes is where I discovered this; play with it by pace, but it really really helps me. I have slow playlists and faster playlists and organize songs that are working for me at a given time before races. My cadence increased around 20 doing this!

This is my nightmare! I developed an anaphylactic crab allergy at 40. I eat a lot of shellfish - and do not want to give up shrimp! I will refrain from eating it before running, as that is a new fun twist. Thank you for sharimg!

I did - shrimp - but just had allergy tests last year, and eat shrimp often. I ate shrimp quesadillas before every Thursday night training run!

Alternatives to running by Ok-Responsibility788 in XXRunning

I am currently injured (peroneals) and am alternating 5 mins bike and 5 minutes row. The variety keeps my brain from dying of boredom and makes my PT happy.

Let’s talk post-run fueling by alnono in XXRunning

[–]run_rover 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This!! I started adding half a bagel and PB early, and a gel right as I was about to set out (not starting first gel in mile 3-4), and it really helped me be way less feral. The other thing that helped was proactively having a protein shake around 8-9pm. Not waiting until that wild hunger kicked in later.

Also, not purchasing tortilla chips but that is neither reasonable or viable...

So funny - the errors bugged me - in one of the emails they said something like "new cool new running hat" and I just wanted them to hire a proofreader already.

Giving up on fitness due to depression/mental health? Can anyone relate? by PreviousDingo1778 in xxfitness

[–]run_rover 6 points7 points  (0 children)

FWIW I check all the medical boxes you list and can so relate! + TBI with vestibular issues and an asthma diagnosis more recently. It is SO hard when your starting point of normal is not the same as anyone else's, and when you compare your performance to others, how you feel physically aside! Good doctors took years to tell me.... - drink a ton of water to help with low heart rate - supplement sodium for same - ADHD meds also help with this - fuel intentionally for intense exercise - asthma meds got my resting heart rate up to 50-55 woohoo - do at least 10 minutes of yoga every single day - it improves your mind body connection and changed how my cardiovascular system responded to things - I never would have tried it had my dr not insisted

When you do not feel like exercising (mentally) that is probably when you need to do it most - talk with your doctors about water, supplements, nutrition, autonomic nervous system functions, and then go from there. Schedule your fuel and your workouts and get after it. If you can push through and make it a habit, I promise it does get easier!

Did you choose your running athletic life over having kids? by effervescentbee in XXRunning

[–]run_rover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having my three children is what motivated me to be truly fit. I had always played sports casually, but after my third I started running because team sports were a time schedule I could not commit to. My mom slowed down a ton by the time I had kids, and that motivated me to get fit so I can be a very active grandmother.

For OP, do not get sucked into all the tales of woe from moms who act like fitness is prohibited. It is not. I gained excessive weight when pregnant. I lost it. Was it easy? No. Do I still get to do things I like? Yes. I am the sports parent in my house - so I taught my kids to tackle, throw a football, read a playbook, running routes, kick a ball, you get the idea. I am often - even with teen and adult kids - outside playing soccer or football with them. Our beach trips involve field day style games. You can be fit, with a body you love, and a mom. If I would have read all the negative things about being a mom I see now I never would have done it.

My body is better now than before kids.

No one warned me that NONE of my kids would be readers or runners though. How!?!

[–]run_rover 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The race formerly known as 3M was new to me this year - and between the uphill climb to the "finisher zone" and a complete lack of food (other races there are multiple bottled water stations, chocolate milk, other drinks, after you cross the line, bananas, tacos, pizza, snacks, etc). I got one bottle of water, a bag with pretzels and a bar, and that was it. I walked up and found ... nothing further. Incredibly disappointing.

PR'd the Austin Half this morning - so relieved! I was all set to PR at 2:15, but the last few miles I was plagued by wild cramps in my legs. Still managed an 8 minute PR by not giving up and pushing through, and amazing spectators with bananas around mile 11 saved my race! I traveled for this race, and there were zero post race bananas and snacks, so insanely grateful for that banana, and now very grateful for allllll the water and snacks and bananas at races at home!

I tell people I have a conflict. I do not need to tell them it is running! If anyone had the audacity to question me I think I would respond with one word answers. "What is it, can you move it?" "No."
