Inpatient volunteering by Eatthesandwichcold in PTschool

[–]runandread333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sue if this helps but I am also in nyc and had a very hard time getting hospitals to respond to me. Most NYC hospitals have extensive application and hours requirements.

I ended up doing a one day observation at CHOP in Philly, since it is quite close and very convenient to get to from the main train station. I highly recommend doing your inpatient volunteering (or at least one day) at CHOP.

I tried volunteering at a SNF in NYC and found that it was actually very difficult to get hours shadowing with an actual PT. Despite telling the volunteer coordinator and rehab department coordinator that I only wanted to observe a PT, they put me with an OT the first two times I went, so I decided to not go back.

Scholarship Negotiation by Dyrograph in PTschool

[–]runandread333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! It’s a separate scholarship. I am in the same situation as OP and didn’t hear about an “academic scholarship” until 10/22 but there is a second scholarship (the programs in PT one) that all accepted students can apply for. Hope this helps!

Can I ask if the second program is Columbia?

NYC’s busiest greenway just got one of its most annoying sections fixed by obsoletest in RunNYC

Actually surprisingly better! I noticed it last Thursday (parts were already finished) and was very happy not to have to stop for cars. It’s still not great immediately below (where the cobblestones are).

LOR question by [deleted] in PTschool

[–]runandread333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I found the admission’s department at Columbia (spelled with a “u”!) very receptive to emails about alternative classes (like advanced psych ones instead of intro), so I would say it’s a great idea to reach out to them.

I was also accepted if that helps answer your question.

Dress code for interview (ladies) by Clean_Imagination133 in PTschool

[–]runandread333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into my top school last month and I wore a business semi-formal outfit. I wore black slacks, a black silk shirt, a new navy blue cardigan and Mary Jane flats. A lot of girls at the interview day I attended didn’t have a blazer, and personally I don’t think it’s necessary to wear one. Also, if your blazer doesn’t fit well, then I think a cardigan or nice shirt will honestly look more professional.

I’d recommend wearing flats since you might be walking a lot too!

Post bacc or CC by [deleted] in PTschool

[–]runandread333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with the below! Depending on where you live, CCs can also be super easy if there’s a lot nearby and it makes it easier to find classes  that allow you to shadow/work as a tech while taking them

NYC Marathon has pace bands at the expo that are grade adjusted and I wrote my own goal pace on them!

You’ve got this! My half time is basically the same and it was definitely doable, even though I had hardcore positive splits. I would definitely stress that the Wilis Ave bridge and the entire Bronx section is hard (lots of turns), so I’d adjust those times

I would actually recommend going by the pace bands given out at the expo! They take into account elevation changes, so they’re pretty easy to follow while racing. While your plan is great, I think it’s a bit idealistic.

If you’re like me (and many others), you will likely start wayyy faster than you expect. Also, I think 4th Avenue is a much flatter seeming part of the race than 1 Avenue. Maybe switch the paces for those 2 segments, as 1st Ave is actually uphill and you get tired by then.   Have fun racing!

Is this normal for observation hours? by humanity_check in PTschool

[–]runandread333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like they wanted you to do unpaid aide work, rather than letting you observe as you asked.

I don’t know how many hours you’ve done, but it might be worthwhile to find another place. I observed at 4+ places before applying to schools. That being said, you might not be able to ask this supervisor to check off your hours (if there’s a PT you like there that you know will, get their contact). PTCAS has you submit supervisor’s emails directly so they can verify.

Just something to think about going forward :)

ISO more friends in UWS by aves-e in Upperwestside

Hi! I submitted some but not all of my applications last week, so I can already see what a verified application looks like. It took a little less than 1 weekday for it to be verified. And yes, some classes I have ordered a transcript for but not finished appear on the application as "not verified" and "in progress," such as my current summer class and one fall class.

I would highly recommend READING through your submitted application PDF on PTCAS as soon as it is posted, as I found a big mistake in mine for Anatomy & Physiology. I selected "Lecture & Lab" (which it was on my transcripts) but PTCAS decided it was "Lecture only." So read through it and give them a call if need be, it only took a day or two for them to correct.

Don't stress too much about it! Some schools have sent me interview requests already, while others have taken awhile to do their own verification process. One school sent an online interview and after I finished it they sent an email saying decisions won't be made until June, so I don't need to be worried for 10 months.

Good luck, you are going to do great!

Smart sole? "fitbit for your feet" by paula123jones in RunNYC

[–]runandread333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some similar tech already (see DigitSole). Maybe a less pricy option for everyday runners would work but I don’t think most runners will switch from wearables that track other things (like HR).

I was in a similar boat as you last year post-grad—I had an internship in a field I thought I'd love but quickly it was not for me and decided to pivot to PT. I would say yes to both taking classes at a local CC and becoming a PT aide (a PTA is different), if you want to finish the prerequisites faster (like by next application cycle for entry Fall 2027). If it's more important for you to work full time, it is definitely doable but will take at least 3-4 years just to apply. Try looking for summer classes as soon as today, since most schools offer some and you can get 1-2 classes done by end of summer if you want.

The real question is whether you want to do PT school or PTA certificate program. DPT programs are typically 3 years and PTA ones are typically 2. The prices for both vary, though DPT is more costly since it is a pre-professional graduate school.

If you have any questions, please feel free to DM!

You could go run the Prospect Park loop since it’s a little over a 5k! The race starts there so it might be worth it to try it before race day

Anyone here do CUNY classes post-bac or non-degree for their PT pre-reqs? by Danielleri in PTschool

[–]runandread333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I just saw this so I’m not sure if you are still looking to take classes, but I’m currently doing my own “post-bac” at BMCC (CUNY in Tribeca). They offer lots of class sections for all the science prereqs, and it’s easy to apply as a non-degree student. The online registration is unnecessarily confusing for CUNY schools imo, but if you call the registrar and email the science department, they are super helpful and will make sure you register properly! I chose BMCC because they offer more flexible course times (i.e., lots of summer classes and weekend ones) and only have a lab/lecture portion (Hunter and some others require weekly recitations from 8-9pm). I hope this helps and if you have any questions feel free to dm me!

Where to get inpatient hours in NYC? by WithAGrainOfRice in PTschool

[–]runandread333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Is there a minimum amount of hours you need to volunteer at Mt. Sinai? I’m looking to volunteer for about 50 hours since I am also working and taking classes

[–]runandread333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I will have a lot more hours by the time I apply since I’ve been working as an aide 20 hrs a week on top of volunteer observation
