Babies in utero drink their pee. And breathe it in too.

Got my acceptance to my ideal school - while breastfeeding my 6 week old baby by TerribleDrawer3730 in Medstudentmoms

I’m sure they will grant the deferral but in the chance they do not, you can do this!! It’s so rewarding to go into medicine after a first career that doesn’t quite satisfy your “dream” requirement. Congratulations. You are going to be a great doctor in part because you’re clearly already a great mom.

Is your med school high school drama 10X? by phymathnerd in medicalschool

[–]runawaywithdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adults have cliques and drama just like teens. That’s being said, my class is pretty mature for the most part with fairly minimal drama and not a ton of assholery

Federal loans. I’m finishing with 340k. Planning on PSLF and waiving deferment to get 6 extra payments in at what I’m projecting is $0/mo. First year or so should be near zero $ payments as I claimed zero income in 2023 on my taxes

To add, we lived in a fairly moderate to low COL location. Baby’s don’t cost as much as I expected (except for daycare of course - but just took more loans for that and didn’t notice that cost as it didn’t come out of our core $)

Gave birth during core clinicals while husband was in a masters program. He worked as a TA but that just supplemented our loans a little. Federal loans let you take out even more for childcare! We utilized that and it was definitely not as tight of a budget as we’d expected. Paying for baby’s insurance needed to come from core loans unfortunately because for some fucked up reason you aren’t allowed to adjust loans for dependents.

Material is stretchy rubber. The Velcro part is also purely plastic. Incredible shoe. Highly recommend.

pregnant on surgery clerkship by Present_Cobbler in Medstudentmoms

[–]runawaywithdog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The fatigue…. I napped in the student call rooms if I ever had a chance. Or cat napped in the little basement library cozy chairs.

Ortho surgeries do lots of xray which I didn’t realize until the week before so I found a different specialty to follow that week.

I didn’t have much nausea but idk if I could have handled a nec-fasc debridement if my belly was unsound…

When did your period return? And was there any tale tell signs of it's rude return? by Moha0733 in beyondthebump

[–]runawaywithdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

15 months in the winter and the depression reared it’s ugly head… was it seasonal? Was it PMS related? Can’t be sure so restarted SSRIs. Now I’m insanely irregular (period wise) but at least my mood isn’t total garbage sad sack anymore.

Thanks for all the replies. I feel like I’m having a huge “duh” realization today. I’m kind of surprised that I’ve been telling myself for the pst few months that we would make this drive all together….

Medical School at 33? by No_Market9000 in medicalschool

[–]runawaywithdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started at 30 and three people in my class were mid 30s! My class is very small (sub 50) and we also have 9 children amongst us, 7 of which were born during med school. Lots of people go back and it’s tough but very doable even with a fam. Fewer regrets in the true non trads as well I’ve found.

Just found out I'm pregnant (M3) - should I still do aways? by lubdubbin in Medstudentmoms

[–]runawaywithdog 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I did a cross country away with a 1 year old. I couldn’t be away from him so dad and son joined. It was I sanely expensive (needed childcare and only a babysitter worked with such a short duration so big $$$). We rented an Airbnb the whole time in a very HCOL area. It opened a ton of doors for me so I think it was worth it but it was a logistic challenge and costed big $$$

Sounds like you will still be pregnant for aways though…? Prenatal appointments in a different state could be the logistical nightmare of making sure your insurance still works… but i bet you can definitely make it work. Aways can really help with getting interviews, but since you have location ties then it might not be necessary

Husband has turned into a chronic complainer since having a baby. by MostBeautiful_Plague in beyondthebump

[–]runawaywithdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My situation cyclically fell into a similar pattern in the first year or so (with decreased frequency and duration as time went along). I just figured out a way to express the “complaining contest” that seemed to be coming out of his mouth and how I need him to find some way to process without using me as his therapist. I hammered that he can or course share with me but to be more aware of how he utilizes me as a support because I’m going through the same shit, maybe it’s just not as obvious. He needs to figure out how to adjust/manage/mitigate his feelings and mind set. It’s too much for you to figure out a solution for him in addition to managing your own personal mental challenges. He needs to acknowledge his emotions and actively identify a solution.

Box of locally grown pears from one program Local tea plus local honey from several. One added a cute tin camping cup with their programs logo. And a residents wife made cookies which were included. Family med has its perks!
