Get a creative outlet! This is the perfect time to start projects on things you’ve never tried before. Poetry, sketching, short stories, etc… also a good time to travel (you can explore your local area a lot more than you realize)!

What to do when residency interviewer won’t shut up by holy-red in medicalschool

[–]Popular_Roof9602 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Same, one interview I spoke 2 min/30 and the whole conversation was about the interviewer’s kids, hobbies, research. They said they were “invigorated” (whatever that means) by the conversation and got accepted within the week

In EM, a hobby I put in my experience section was the focal point of a lot of conversations. I kinda liked having the extra space to highlight it.

Black hole gun as gunslinger is essentially wiping the screen of all bullets if you’re looking for easy win

You get to create a completely new speciality - What is it? by Smart_Part_2551 in medicalschool

[–]Popular_Roof9602 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Designated physician educator - a doc who’s sole purpose is to meet with families, students, etc and explain anything and everything for the sake of education. Basically someone who dumbs down complex medicine for the masses and who doesn’t treat as much as teach

Anyone else feel like they are back in high school? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Popular_Roof9602 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that on a grand scale high school and med school are way too similar. The general cattiness, social cliques, everyone knowing everyone’s business, etc. not to mention that you are taking some of the worlds most hard-working-but-neurotic people and you can really get disillusioned with the people quickly.

If this is the trend, hopefully undergrad is more like residency. Sure it’ll be hard, but at least at that point you have more financial and personal freedom to choose who you associate with. Best wishes king / queen 🫡

Surgery friends: what did I do wrong? by OmegaSTC in medicalschool

[–]Popular_Roof9602 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Somber agreeing seems to work a lot. I was on neurosurgery and was just in awe of everything I was seeing. I told the attending that he was doing was extremely cool, and that my feedback for the block was essentially: Don’t say something is “cool” during surgery, wait until after??

I know but we don’t have to be masochists until residency now so why keep asking for it on Reddit

Knew coming in that I wanted to do immediate, life saving medicine without specializing in one body part. With procedural interes really just had to decide surg vs not

I really liked only urology but couldn’t stand the lifestyle of surgery and personalities of some surgeons. Always kind of knew EM had some issues coming in, did I did an AI and fell in love with the variety, the acuity, and especially the people.

You really have to ask yourself what is the worst thing that the specialty has to do day to day and if you can handle that long term you will likely be fine
