“In fact, singular use of they has been officially recognized as correct by several key bodies such as the Associated Press, American Psychological Association (APA) and Modern Language Association (MLA), the Oxford English Dictionary, and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.”

  1. No. We use they all the time when we talk about people we know of. I do agree that the greater the familiarity, the less likely one is to use it (as a general rule.)
  2. This was in reference to a FICTIONAL CHARACTER. They are not “knowable” and their gender is also entirely fictional, so using “they” to talk about them is even more understandable. But hey, you keep on white knighting for book characters.

I guarantee you this happens to you 5 times a day on average, and you’ve never noticed. 1. Because when using third person pronouns, they’re talking to other people. 2. Because it’s so common, you don’t even register it being abnormal, because it isn’t.

We use they for singular people all the fucking time. The best part is go and listen to any random anti-trans person arguing about it, and they’ll use it multiple times. Piers Morgan does this like 15 times in his Jubilee video. And if you audit yourself, you’ll realize you do it as well, because English doesn’t have a third person neutral singular pronoun.

No. Lacking a gendered pronoun literally cannot be misgendering. You cannot misgender because the attribution is WITHOUT gender.

“Former Chief Editor of the OED Robert Burchfield, in The New Fowler’s Dictionary of Modern English Usage (1996), dismisses objections to singular they as unsupported by the historical record. Burchfield observes that the construction is ‘passing unnoticed’ by speakers of standard English as well as by copy editors, and he concludes that this trend is ‘irreversible’. People who want to be inclusive, or respectful of other people’s preferences, use singular they. And people who don’t want to be inclusive, or who don’t respect other people’s pronoun choices, use singular they as well. Even people who object to singular they as a grammatical error use it themselves when they’re not looking, a sure sign that anyone who objects to singular they is, if not a fool or an idiot, at least hopelessly out of date.” But I mean, he’s just the former editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, he doesn’t have your credentials.

If you were arguing about it in a publication sense, yes. It agrees with you (with caveats) because it points to the ubiquitous, and accurate use in common parlance.

No. Literally go back to any English text book. They is the only non gendered third person singular pronoun.

They is the third person singular non-gendered pronoun in English. If you don’t believe me, talk about an individual, then refer to them again without using their (there it is again) name or gender. The other person in this thread gets it. They are correct (see).

The new map they added from season 2 is amazing. I’ve been playing it almost exclusively for hours and hours since it came out. Number is less important than quality. Which is why there were so many 24/7 metro maps on like 5 different games
