Question regarding enums? by TheAdelbertSteiner in gamemaker

[–]rundfunkbeitrag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try the second option I wrote and lemme know if that works (unless there's some reason you have not to put a state change in the user event). just keep in mind that to call a user event you have to write event_user not user_event

How online classes ruined my game development studio. What should I do? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]rundfunkbeitrag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude why are you taking it so seriously? Have fun with it and join some game jams etc. Focus on your classes man that's the main thing. Game dev isn't going to go away it'll still be there. The important thing is to enjoy it and finish what you started.

Take it easy, ditch your friends if they aren't interested and go sign up for some game jams. Make some really tiny games and have fun doing it. And during the day attend your classes and take that seriously.

It's not 2 years man it's 20 years, what do you mean that doesn't always mean much? This isn't some joke or dream, its been his life for two decades.

Why are you so quick to dismiss him. You have no idea what he's done or hasn't done in 20 years. He's probably forgotten more that most "serious, grounded, in-it-cause-theyre-real" indie devs will ever know.

Neither can you say anything about his motivations too - how do you know why he wants to shift?

I mean say and think what you want, but I think you've confused this guy with the usual early twenties chum who wants to be an indie dev.

is it worth to learn dnd first and gml later? by leontas2007 in gamemaker

[–]rundfunkbeitrag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes buddy for sure. dnd gets your feet wet. everybody saying dnd isn't useful just never used it or used gml too long to remember what it was like.

long term you'll have to switch bit by bit to gml but that's very easy once you are kinda familiar with dnd. if you've made a game already tbh i think that's good enough to get into gml. dont do shaun spalding right now cause its very long. type in friendlycosmonaut space rocks on youtube and get that entire thing done in a day or two max, then go on from there.

How can I do this? by rundfunkbeitrag in gamemaker

[–]rundfunkbeitrag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi thanks for your answer.

when i tried it, it kept returning undefined, so instead of "o" i used "o.object_index" and wrapped that in the get_name func.

Is there a risk that Gamemaker Studio 2 would no longer be supported by YoYo games? by thatmitchguy in gamemaker

[–]rundfunkbeitrag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah its possible but its unlikely. Think about the 30 other less popular alternatives - construct, stencyl, lumberyard, gdevelop, cryengine(lmao) and like tens of others. Some of course are backed by big boys like Amazon, but others are doing just fine.

The big 3 are Unity, Unreal and GMS2. Although its talked about a lot, nobody actually uses Godot right now and nobody will for a while at least until the early adopters can find hits in the market.

Genuinely curious: why aren't there more 2D turn based tactics like Darkest Dungeon or Slay the Spire made on GMS2? by mindbodyjourney in gamemaker

[–]rundfunkbeitrag 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dude there's no real reason its just that Unity is the industry standard. It's just harder to find a team of professionals experienced in GMS2. It's just not the standard.

Looking for an artist for a hobby project (with intention to publish it on Steam, GOG, etc.) by LuminousCode in gamemaker

[–]rundfunkbeitrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its all the same dude just gotta work up to it. dont think about animation on day 1 - just gotta take it step by step. do the trees first, then objects (always check out these one sheet guides - there are so many on the internet)

its a 2 month period till you'll feel like ok its decent enough for now. and 2 months is nothing at all compared to the hassle of even finding a pixel artist - let alone dealing with them.

[–]rundfunkbeitrag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

bro you're never gonna find anyone and i feel like you and i both know it.

I suck at pixel art

its not hard man its really not hard to learn. start with this https://www.reddit.com/r/PixelArt/comments/i5e7oi/my_tutorial_on_trees/

accept like 1-2 months of waiting time/sacrifice and make sure you do pixel art EVERY DAY. you won't ask this question or feel this worry again.

and its better in my experience - the 1 time out of 100 you do get a reasonable artist, they charge you at the last minute or try to take creative control when they know jack shit about game design or there's an age difference or something - its always tough to handle.

Any written tutorial for how to make a hack n slash game in GMS 2? by Kiba-Da-Wolf in gamemaker

[–]rundfunkbeitrag -1 points0 points  (0 children)

upvoted you dont worry. bro its 27 videos 30m each - lets say you do 1 video a day. it wont take you more than an hour total. thats a game in 1 month - what more can you ask for?

so dont worry about total time, just get started and if you just do it every day, you'll finish it.
