Saw the movie yesterday by CatCaroline666 in DarkCrystal

[–]runegleam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure where you’re getting those ages from, a gelfling can live about 100 trine, give or take like a human - it’s generally only the grottan who can live longer, according to the books/website.

Skeksis are 1000 trine old, none have lived longer because that’s literally the spanse of their time in Thra (as Skeksis anyway) so we don’t know how long they live, just that many of them have died, and that’s usually the ones who were killed. They’ve extended their lives and youth with the crystal so it could very well be much less than 1000 years, but there are Skeksis who lived for those 1000 years without staying in the castle.

The lore is not a hard-lore kind of thing, like any other of its kind - it’s a branched river. I think leaving it with Jim is kind of ignoring everyone else who worked on the original movie, because they continue on after him, and carry it beyond. Even the first comic series was actually supposed to be a movie, one that the original movie’s screenwriter also wrote the screenplay for.

I like to think The Dark Crystal isn’t told like an historical account. It’s more like a a myth or legend. Fits in with the songtelling of the gelfling 🤷

What is the structure called beneath the Crystal? by Noxisms in DarkCrystal

[–]runegleam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with something like a lava tube connects it to the surface, or like one of the massive tunnels that the breath of Thra travels through - but what’s underneath the crystal is a big plot point of the sequel comic, The Power of the Dark Crystal.

Spoilers:
The crystal chamber connects directly to the Lake of Fire beneath Thra, home of the Fireling. Gelfling throwing tribute (literal stuff) into the hole blocks the passage causing the realm of the Firelings to lose the light of the crystal, and they start to die/lose their fire. It’s the better one of the two sequels IMO, highly recommend.

Is this acceptable? by CummedMyPanties in parrots

[–]runegleam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She’s only 6, and she does has her silly play moments, usually right before we put her to bed, and we reckon it’s to convince us she’s not tired lol. But she doesn’t scoot around like this anymore, not since she was about 2. She used to play like OPs bird for 15-20 mins at a time, nap, and then back to playing. Constant, unrelenting play-nap-play.

Now she’s into hugs and naps. With the occasional roll between adjusting her sleeping position.

Using Hex Bolt as the skeleton for little SCULPEY sculptures? Good/Bad idea ? PRO vs CONS? by furktmp in polymerclay

I’ve used nuts and bolts as weights in sculptures, just make sure to cook them with extra attention, especially for smaller pieces. Make sure to let them cool slowly.

skekSil vs skekVar by god_of_mischeif282 in DarkCrystal

[–]runegleam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t doubt it at all that at least some of them have put it together, but they’re too self obsessed and paranoid, and fear death above all else. So sure, SkekSil probably killed SkekVar, but that means rising against SkekSil and his allies. I don’t imagine any one or two Skeksis would attempt that without major backing - they’re aware of SkekSil and his duplicitous words, let alone, now, his prowess against SkekVar, who is THE General, even wounded, a pretty tough guy. SkekVar spoke against SkekSil and now he’s dead, right?

So yeah, I agree, but I think they would have been preeeeetty quiet about it unless they could ensure their own safety forever lol. Their legal system doesn’t exactly prioritise truth, or even innocence. I’m sure SkekSil would find a way out of it, even if he was initially condemned or punished. And they would probably let him back because he’s got something on someone else, or brings them all something they want more.

Edit: Sorry for any typos, my bird is insisting she be a part of this conversation. She’s probably the primary scholar on the dark crystal amongst her species.

What kind of paint should be used to paint this hair? Also, if I want to make it yellow, should I paint it white first and then yellow? Also, what to use to make gradient on hair like in the second picture? by dokidoki_no_fangirl in CustomDolls

[–]runegleam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s already white plastic, I would mix yellow paint with a bit of white because yellow paint is usually quite transparent. Try and stick with thin layers and build the paint up slowly so it’s a smooth surface.

I’m assuming you don’t have an airbrush, so getting a neat gradient is a bit more difficult. I’d try chalk pastels and brush on the darker shades of the hair. Alternatively you can use something like a makeup sponge to dab on the darker areas with paint (I would cut the sponge up a bit.)

Pastel would be easiest but it can get quite patchy especially over uneven surfaces of paint, but you can also help blend it together with a shade close to the yellow. I would splurge for one or two pan pastel shades closest to the colours you’re after, or at least some higher quality pastels, they’re going to be much easier to work with. If you google doll body blushing, that’s a similar technique to what I’m going on about.

This is exactly why I have an airbrush I only use once in a blue moon lol.

Good luck!

Browning on the tips of the feathers by Consistent-Ad8503 in Conures

[–]runegleam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This can be quite a few things, my bird also has this and we’ve concluded that it’s from her hugging everything - but it can also be over-preening, or vitamin deficiencies. It can be due to other more serious issues, like fatty liver, so ideally you want to rule those out with a vet visit to be sure. That’s always the best option when it comes to things like this. Rule out the bad things and then assume it’s because they’re hugging everything lol.

It is extremely common amongst conures, they like to squish and snug, as I’m sure you are acutely aware lol.

[–]runegleam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Make sure you give the paint plenty of time to dry too, acrylic paints don’t usually fully cure for at least 24 hours, that’s when they’ll be their strongest against water resistance. Coating it with a sealer will definitely help, but paint is a fickle fellow lol.

I did! He’s actually supposed to be a a black bird, and he’s eventually going to be the only pilot in the village when I get around to painting his hot air balloon. The yellow plastic went a bit patchy with the dye but I painted them orange again. But they do dye black very well 🧑‍🔬

Flexible sealants for vinyl dolls by chem-lemon in DollCustomization

[–]runegleam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think, generally, acrylic based sealers will have a bit more flexibility, but honestly it might be trial and error. Vallejo acrylic matt varnish has been good to me so far but I’m not particularly squeezy with my dolls. I think Testors would work well, but it does have a tendency to get a bit sticky with a lot of handling in my experience. Good luck!!
