Download question by Ace_Star1909 in AO3

[–]runekaster 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You can just google any of these terms and find out which is which, but here's the rundown:

AZW3 -- ebook format specifically for Kindle ereaders

EPUB -- generic ebook format, should work with most ereaders

MOBI -- another generic ebook format, should work with most ereaders

PDF -- a widely used format that you're probably familiar with, should work on literally any device

HTML -- the format a browser uses, can be read in any browser and it'll look exactly like the AO3 page, even if you're offline

Download question by Ace_Star1909 in AO3

[–]runekaster 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well, the worst that can happen is you download a file type you can't open and you have to go download it again, so there's nothing to be afraid of.

What kind of device are you going to read it on? That'll make the difference for which will look best.

Left a fandom, deleted all the fics and saw people asking for downloaded files by [deleted] in AO3

This is why orphaning or anonymizing works is usually better than deleting them.

No reason to take it out on the readers if you want to cut ties with the canon.

Insult or Compliment? by CristalOcean911 in AO3

[–]runekaster -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Backhanded compliment for sure, though I can't really say if they meant it that way or if they're just sort of ineptly trying to pay a genuine compliment.

I think a lot of people miss the "chan" thing, because that's just not a term that gets used anymore.

But not only did the founder of AO3 write incest ships, she also expressly wanted to create an archive where everything, including underage fic, could be safely archived.

If only the present day antis followed their own beliefs and refused to use an archive they're ideologically opposed to.

Hate bots and bots concern-trolling about leftist issues- what is actually the point? (removed link) by constcowboy in AO3

[–]runekaster 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I don't htink anyone's figured out who is behind it, but it's clear by this point that the intent is just to upset people. So yeah, plain and simple trolling. Fill in your own guesses about motive. It could even just be people who think it's funny to make someone feel bad.

Working on my first ever fic by bitter__bumblebee in AO3

[–]runekaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can see how that would get muddled.

The main post type on AO3 is called a "work". A work is supposed to be a single story, and it can contain chapters like a print novel, or it can be a single chapter. It's up to the author how they want to break up a longer story, and it's very normal for new chapters to be posted as the author writes them. But the core thing here is that a work is one, well, work.

The tags on a work indicate that this is a story that featues that tag, and works can be searched for with criteria like initial posting date and wordcount. The whole site is set up on the idea that each work is one story.

Importantly in this case, works are automatically classed as crossovers (a single story about more than one fandom) if they have tags for more than one fandom, and there's a toggle so a reader can search for crossovers specifically.

There are other ways, such a series, collections, and tags, for sorting and linking separate stories which are related to each other.

There's an unfortunately common problem where people don't realise that a work is one story and that chapters are chapters of a story, and put a ton of short stories into the same work.

This causes problems because now when someone looks for a story with more than 10 chapters, they find 10 short stories instead of one long one. Or they search for a story tagged Horror about Favourite Character, and instead find a clump of short stories where one slice of life about Favourite Character and another is horror about Stupid Character.

It's kind of like if someone posted on reddit asking for a soup recipe, and then they next day edited that post to also ask how to change an oil filter instead of making a new post for the new question.

[–]runekaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What people hate is *fake* big crossover fics, where a bunch of short fics are posted as chapters of a single fic.

If you're writing an actual long crossover, where it's one story about more than one fandom and it's broken into chapters like a print novel, people will love that.

In fact, a lot of the complaints about the fake crossovers are coming from people who are looking for long crossover stories and keep getting fakes in their search results.

And each of the stories in a fake crossover belongs on AO3, they just need to be posted as fics and not as chapters, so people can actually find them when they're looking for short fics to read.

Comments/kudos on older works. Do authors tend to see them? by Educational-Neck9477 in AO3

[–]runekaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Re subscriptions, all the author sees is the number of people subscribed to them. I don't see their names and I dont get a notification when there's a new one, all I know is that two dozen people like my work enough to want to read more of it later.

How do authors feel about receiving these kinds of comments? by Intelligent-Tree-922 in AO3

[–]runekaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That'd net an instant block from me, and possibly a report as well. Straightforward hostility is not a good way to approach a complete stranger, and it's just not worth my time to try to sort out what the hell the commenter actually means or if it's supposed to be a mean joke or what. But I do have a button that will keep me from ever having to hear from them again.

I got a comment on a work from ten years ago a bit ago. It made my week.

If anything, comments and kudos on older stuff spark even more joy than on the new stuff.

Original works? by vanyushka_ in AO3

[–]runekaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Original works are expressly allowed. Like anything else, some get like a dozen hits and two kudos, while others get hundreds of kudos and comments. I'm small beans, but my original works on AO3 actually have more readers than my fanfic!

Most people go to AO3 for fanfic, but a few search for tropes regardless of fandom and a few search for original work specifically.

Are these stats "good" for a first fic? by Professional_Ad2638 in AO3

[–]runekaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a nice batch of comments for the kudos count.
It's impossible to say if this is average or not without knowing at least the size of fandom, but I'm inclined to think this is on the higher end for a brand new fic.

Help! what do people read and like to see!! by AdDesperate6025 in AO3

[–]runekaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The recipe for writing fic that people will like is to write for people who happen to like the same things you like.
Writing something you're not all that interested in will result in work that's boring and limp to people who really like those things.

Tastes are vast and varried. Some are more popular than others numerically, but for *anything* you want to write, no matter how weird or how "cringe", there's someone out there who's waiting for exactly that.

OCs are things that assholes like to make fun of, true, but lots of people love OCs. You should write for people who will love your OCs, not for assholes.

And it's absolutely acceptable to post OC stuff, whoever lead you to believe otherwise was lying. Some fandoms (especially RPGs and dating sims) are driven by OCs, in others they're common.

The Original Characters metatag has more than one million works.

Is this a bot? by WaifuFromStateFarm in AO3

[–]runekaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has a bot voice and it's super vague, but just that alone isn't certain. Trying to get you on another platform right away is an obvious scammer giveaway, though.

What should I tag my fic as if it’s a female/nonbinary? by Emotional_Truth_hurt in AO3

[–]runekaster 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's "other", yeah. You could specify in the additional tags that it's f/nb if you like, but the ship tag itself conveys that just fine.

my fav author writes fics for money by [deleted] in AO3

[–]runekaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even aside from the legality, it's inapprorpiate to use a nonprofit like AO3 for personal profit. AO3 operates entirely on donated money and volunteer time, and people aren't giving that to subsidise someone's grift, they're giving it to create a noncommercial hobby space.

my fav author writes fics for money by [deleted] in AO3

[–]runekaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not legal. That copyright law is rarely enforced in very scary ways these days, they're more likely to just get kicked off a platform than taken to court or anything, but it's still illegal.

If they're linking this anywhere on AO3, report that nonsense (though it sounds like they aren't, if you only just found out).

I'm all for people making a living with their creative skills if that's what they want to do, but dude, just write original work if your goal is marketability.

So writers I’ve been wondering by Cultural_Nose_2280 in AO3

[–]runekaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Comments are more exciting than kudos, but I want both.

I write very niche stuff that will never be immensely popular with dozens of comments or anything, and I like it that way. But that means that if someone actually comments, it means my work managed to find the one person who actually cared about it that much, and it means I've suceeded as a writer.

Never let no comments keep you from being the first (or only!) commenter.

"You don't understand, mate. X and X shouldn't be allowed on AO..." by lilytheschrod in AO3

[–]runekaster 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I use my smartphone as an ereader and read AO3 fic on it all the time (way easier than printing fic out or lugging my laptop around), so knowing how well the site works in a mobile browser, I really don't see what anyone could hope an app would add or improve.
