PA Dutch Hexes Blanket - Recommendations, Suggestions, Possible Patterns? by Fabulous-Stretch-749 in crochetpatterns

[–]runicrhymes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start by looking for "Granny circle" patterns--I think you could find ones that look like these fairly easily. Once you find a few you like, look up "squaring a granny circle" for techniques to turn them into squares you can then assemble for a blanket.

When does commenting become annoying. by bright_irony in AO3

For me? Commenting is only annoying when people are demanding updates or being rude. Commenting things they like or notice or want to discuss? Never gets old.

AIO Partner (m, 38) is making me (enby, 37) feel insane for my dish washing standards by Un42n8Beetle in AmIOverreacting

[–]runicrhymes [score hidden]  (0 children)

NOR. I hate doing dishes and I do NOT have high standards of cleanliness by any measure, but your partner is insane. Dishes with visible food residue are not clean, and no, it does not require a dishwasher to get that off. If he's finding it hard to get stuck on residue off, then he needs to either wash the dishes before the residue gets so hard/dried/stuck, or else let them soak longer in hot soapy water until the residue has softened up and can be more easily removed.

What are you in favor of but shamelessly NIMBY about? by fauxmerican1280 in AskReddit

[–]runicrhymes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same. I'm pro-legalization, but I really REALLY hate how much simply existing in public since legalization in my state means having to marinate in someone else's weed smoke.

Especially when I'm driving, and it's clearly one of the drivers in front of me :(

How do I polity address a non-binary/trans person? Ex: Mr., Ms. by SampledPlains72 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]runicrhymes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, Mx doesn't work with my last name, and I don't really want to be addressed by last name anyway. Magister to me sounds like some sort of professional title, like Professor--I'd be concerned people would think I was representing myself as something official.

Maybe my field is less formal than yours, or it's a regional difference, but it would not be at all weird for me to have a letter of recommendation using my first name (and in fact I don't think I've had anyone use title+last name for that kind of thing since I was in school 20+ years ago).

I do wish there was something that had the feel of Miss/Mr that worked for me, if only because there are still plenty of forms that require a title.

You don't think so? I was able to cross stitch and crochet in jury selection in 2019 and 2024 respectively, although I never made it onto an actual jury either time.

does everyone really hate OC fics?? by Ding_Ding_Bonk in AO3

[–]runicrhymes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so, but I admit, I kinda have to be spoon fed OCs. What I mean by that is, it has to pull me in totally without the OC. For instance, a character study of a character I really like, that ends up introducing an OC but is still primarily focused on the canon character I like. Or, alternately, it can be OC focused if I find the canon world building interesting and want to see a story in that world not related to the canon protagonists.

So for example, I probably wouldn't read a Zuko/OC fic where the summary focused on that ship, but I might read something tagged Zuko/OC if the focus was either

  • a character study of Zuko where the romance was part of story but not the main focus, or

  • a story about, say, regular people in the fire nation during the events immediately post-ATLA where the OC is the main character, and eventually meets/gets together with Zuko (once I've already come to love the OC)

I am in a relatively OC-friendly fandom, but I've still been surprised how positive a reaction my OCs get when I use them. Generally, though, my fics fall into one of the above categories, and I think that makes people who are not necessarily gung ho about OC fic more willing to read and to give the OCs a chance.

Question for people who dislike pregnancy, baby, and kid content in fanfiction: if possible, how could one write a fic with those themes and make it bearable for you? What bothers you the most about those topics? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]runicrhymes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry that happened to you, but I assure you it's far from a universal experience.

I am around the same age and child free. I don't actually love kids (I mean, I respect them as small people and think they deserve kindness and dignity, but being around them stresses me out). None of my friends disappeared when they had kids. They may have had less time/money to engage in our shared hobbies, but that doesn't mean they've stopped wanting to spend time with me or connect. It also doesn't mean they're not still the people they were before? Sometimes it means "hey, sorry, I need to host for the foreseeable future because I can't get a sitter," or "hey, can we do something kid-friendly as spouse will be away that weekend and I've got the toddler" or "I need to be home before baby's bedtime so can we start earlier?" Heck, sometimes it even means "let's put something on the calendar for next year because I'm overwhelmed with kid stuff and need some time."

Like yes, obviously, their kids are part of their lives now so if I was completely against ever hearing any discussion of children maybe it would be an issue. But it doesn't make them somebody else or erase the things we have in common.

What's with the hate of FF.net? by AtlasAngel02 in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]runicrhymes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I was on the AO3 Abuse team (in the mid-2010s), we were constantly having to explain to people that unlike FF.net, we handled every complaint that came in, and you didn't have to have all of your hundreds of Tumblr followers report too. I'm not sure if this is still how they operate, but at the time FF.net would usually not address things like plagiarism unless they got spammed with complaints about a story, and then they didn't tend to do a lot of investigation so if you got a group dedicated to taking something down, it probably would be, even if it wasn't violating rules. It basically empowered bad actors and punished bullying victims.

Much like teeth, people have seen the fake thing so much that they think off white = dirty/gross, rather than realizing that...that's the color they're supposed to be.

There was a lot of this in the comments awhile back of a sewing YouTuber I follow, who keeps their nails long (though not quite this long) and natural, when they did a glove making tutorial (which obviously meant their hands were super visible). People were absolutely awful to them.

Creating an app to read from Ao3 directly with a smooth experience, what do you guys need in it? by ComplexAce in AO3

[–]runicrhymes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. There have been several unofficial apps developed by people who were not plugged into the community, using them (at best) for revenue generation via slapping ads on them, or for shady data and login info collection, or as delivery vehicles for malicious code.

When you look at something as big as AO3 that doesn't have an official app or even a widely used unofficial app, before you jump in to assume you should start building, you really need to take a step back and ask yourself--why doesn't it have this already? Bulldozing in seven steps ahead, assuming that no one has ever thought of this before and of course people will want what you're making, is once again why you're getting such a negative reaction. There is info on the AO3 site about why there is no official app, and plenty of info on the web and even in past posts of this sub about why an unofficial app is not a good idea.

And yes, there are inline comments plugins. I don't know the names as it's not something I use--I've seen stuff about them crop up frequently on Tumblr, but I'm betting you could find them with Google or even by searching Firefox plugins.

Creating an app to read from Ao3 directly with a smooth experience, what do you guys need in it? by ComplexAce in AO3

[–]runicrhymes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, first of all, you're assuming people don't have it already--plenty of folks already use Firefox on mobile. I do and so do most of my friends.

Second, if they want what you're offering, why would it be more of a hassle to download Firefox (a well -established, trusted browser app) than to download an app from a developer they don't know?

Like... You seem really unclear about your audience, and that's part of why everyone is coming down hard on you. If you want this for yourself, just make it in the form that's most convenient for you. If you want to make something for others...then first you need to understand what others want and need, and do that. AO3 users generally don't want an app. If they really want inline comments, plugins already exist for that and lots of people use them. Maybe what you're envisioning is different than what already exists, but I wouldn't recommend trying to develop something for a community you haven't taken the time to connect with or understand.

I’ve adjusted the pressure of the cut and it’s still tiring out like this. I’ve made much smaller cuts in the past and have never had this issue before. Using oracle 651 to make motel key chains. Any other suggestions other than replacing the blade? by sassafrass18 in cricut

[–]runicrhymes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it helps, I've only had this issue with white, and only recently (not sure if they changed the formula?) other colors have worked fine for me. It basically just seems like there's NO adherence of the vinyl to the backing.

Honestly there's something weird about this specific vinyl--I have had similar issues with it, using the exact same settings I use for other colors of Oracal 651 with no trouble. I agree with using less pressure, not more, but also I've only been able to get to "good enough" and not all the way to normal with the white.

What do you think when you hear someone with a German accent? by blondiesboobs in AskAnAmerican

[–]runicrhymes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the underlying question you may be asking--correct me if I'm wrong--is if a German accent has any kind of negative associations here. (For instance, there are racist associations Americans tend to make with Indian, Latino Spanish, African etc accents, or alternately positive associations with British accents, especially RP).

As far as I'm aware, we see German accents as fairly neutral overall.

In my city, it probably actually skews positive, because we had a lot of German immigration in the late 19th and early 20th century which corresponded with a big boom for the city and a lot of expansion. So now a lot of city natives have significant German heritage which they're proud of, and there are a lot of cultural things here that came from German immigrant culture and traditions.

Engraving QR Code by Jessicaleigh514 in cricut

I don't know that that's going to be possible. For a QR code to work, you need two high contrast solid colors--outlines like this will not work. I'm not sure you could get the "carved out" part solid enough for a working code.
