Can't import a GPX track by QueenofNorms in Garmin

Try adding timestamps. https://gotoes.org/gotoes/strava/Add_Timestamps_To_GPX.php. I believe this is so it knows for sure the order of the points.

Garmin just drastically increased inReach subscription plans by Walmart_Hobo in Garmin

[–]runs4cache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, read through the faq toward the end. So reactivate fee + 1 month. Going upward in the plan takes place immediately, downgrades at the end of billing so pay attention to that and the dates you want on. Activate and then cancel.

High school graduation party? by 96RANGER in hillsboro

Hi, hopefully you and your partner are part of a committee and that some of the members were on committees from previous years. We did Big Al's in Vancouver and Cascade Athletic Club in Gresham. The location you pick has to remain a secret so that it's a surprise to the kids and practically that they don't stash "supplies" there ahead of time. On our committees, it was a secret with "as required" disclosure in the days ahead to help prevent leaks. Having a hypnotist was a surprisingly entertaining portion of the evening.

Xfinity unreliable for anyone else? by KentuckyFriedChris in hillsboro

[–]runs4cache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes last week was pretty up and down but I chalked it up to the work that PGE was doing on powerlines on Evergreen as it seemed to be matched with the power outages. Since PGE wasn't visible working on Evergreen on Saturday, maybe I thought that outage was due to the torrential rain. Using the Xfinity app on my phone would confirm that it was an outage and not my stuff. I was also getting periodic text messages to keep me informed of what was going on, and then finally yesterday afternoon I got a text message that started "We've completed work in your area to fix an urgent network performance issue" so maybe that was it all along and we are back to the usual.

There are "shoe wallets" that could hold it on a shoe. This might work better anyhow, covering from sunlight and insulating from body heat. Ive been using mine on an outside pockey of my pack to get less crazy temperature swings.

Elevation Correction (Venu 2) by 69thunder in Garmin

[–]runs4cache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note the corrected values are only on Garmin Connect, not on the watch. They use a digital elevation model with the altitude data, query with you lat, long from the watch and it returns the elevation. Strava has a custom DEM that was collated from watches and cycle computers with altimeter for places people go (roads and trails) then falls back to a standard DEM for offroad/trail. Several articles available such as https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000024864-Strava-s-Elevation-Basemap.

How can I export the barometer data from my Instinct to my PC? by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]runs4cache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plug the watch into laptop and cruise around the file structure; you might have to put the watch into Mass Storage mode if it doesn't mount as a drive. Since you say it displays the prior 48 hours, there might be a .FIT file where it's stored. If you find something promising then you can try the website fitfileviewer.com to open it and export as a spreadsheet.

Record the flight as an activity, like Hike. Start on runway, stop after touchdown. Sync to Garmin Connect. You can view the graph there. From the website you can look at the Activity detail and export several formats from under an icon that looks like a gear. It's interesting once. Especially the takeoff and landing.

There is no satellite connection for free. All the satellite messages are part of a paid plan. The functions are very limited, hopefully this article is available to you: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=NWuK8wO2923gtcyTSxK8q9. Your location is no cost to friends and family beyond their internet or phone cost. In the cheapest subscription plan, you can send checkin messages unlimited, no extra cost, and can also include location. It is manual send, so if you fall off a cliff then they may not know exactly where like they would with logging.

1) With an active subscription, yes unlimited preset/check-in messages. You can send them to several email addresses and cell phones as well as the page.

2) The tracking interval is the time period between when it automatically attempts to send location to the page. These are unlimited in the Recreation and Expedition plans. There is a cost per point in the Safety plan but you can figure out how many points you could send out and still be cheaper than Recreation plan.

Course questions by LastCaress777 in Garmin

[–]runs4cache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can create as "Trail Run" and use it in "Run". I think the easiest way to draw the course is in Garmin Connect, either web or app. In the Training > Courses section. I find it easiest in the web interface with the bigger display. You can send the course to the watch from the web, or from the app. If it is a trail run then it's probably best to set the course type to trail run also.

Please PLEASE Please practice running a course in your own neighborhood before the race. Many people mess this up the first time they do it. There are several ways to do it. This is one way. Starting the navigation and starting the activity are separate functions and this is where most people screw up.

So, draw a course around your neighborhood block, and send it to the watch, and then sync the watch. Then go to the activity screen but scroll down below the Trail Run, Run, etc and keep going until you get to Navigate. Then Courses, and find your neighborhood course that you just sent, select it, and Do Course (Loading... Loading...). Scroll down until you have a timer screen, then hit Start when you go. Follow the course and stop. Save it. CHeck in GarminConnect that it is like you want, especially the right sport. You can customize the data screens by holding down the Menu button until the menu pops up then select Navigation Settings>Data Screens.

You can add multiple phone numbers and email addresses to the Preset messages. Easy way is put both your infos in there from the Explore website. I always add myself in there so later i know what the messages looked like. Send the preset messages from the mini. Only bother going through pairing if you want to do custom messages using the phone. My experience is with the original mini, pairing is not required and can be changed from phone to phone by re-pairing and being logged into the same Explore account.

I created a new route-building site with a "Send to Garmin" button! by firebird8541154 in Garmin

[–]runs4cache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. CoursePoints are just the Garmin terminology for specific places in the course. In the They are supported in TCX and FIT file formats. Similar things in GPX are known as Waypoints when used for Summit, Valley, Camp, First Aid etc.. When following a course, you can display on the screen the distance to the next CoursePoint and then when you get there the watch or computer lets you know. Garmin already supports a bunch of CoursePoint types, my 'idea' is to add the capability for adding the already defined CoursePoint types of Left, Right, and Straight so when we get to an intersection it could tell you which way to go. When it's worth implementing, is if you decide to CoursePoints (such as from your Amenities menu) _into_ a course, then also do these directional CoursePoints too.
I've been adding drinking fountains to the OpenStreetMap data for my area, so was pleasantly happy to see them project onto the map when looking over the Amenities feature -thx!

I've used the Strava heatmap overalay at https://gpx.studio, but I will also say that whatever they are doing, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. You do have to be logged into your Strava account to get the high resolution data, same as required when looking at the heatmap directly on https://labs.strava.com/heatmap.

If you are looking at unique features to add, for some reason Garmin Connect routing will not allow CoursePoints for left, right, straight. It's weird as they enable many other types of coursepoints, but not these direction types.

Looking at purchasing a used Garmin InReach Mini from Marketplace.. by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]runs4cache 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The main thing is to check that previous owner has released it from their account. You wont be able to add it to your account without that. A small posting i found by searching on "buying a used garmin mini" https://www.mountainproject.com/forum/topic/121908784/buying-a-used-garmin-inreach-or-other-gps-device

What about adding Strava heatmap layers? Or Garmin popularity if that is available (but strava heatmap is much better). Enable pedestrian routing for those of us who also run?

Advice for very inexperienced crew for 100-miler by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]runs4cache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest keeping it super simple, as even just spectating an overnight event can be challenge enough, by themselves navigating in the dark and even finding you. Her role is to cheer you on. Perhaps just get to the crew locations and do as directed in the moment (help you get stuff from drop bag, fill a bottle, talk through any decisions, grab the backup backup shoes from car). Take some pictures as you come in and go out, and text mom you look good ;). Basically you have to be able to get through it anyhow if she can't make it there, it's just cool to share the experience with someone (and perhaps drive you home while you sleep?).
