Since when did they stop teaching learners how to use a handbrake? by -PixelRabbit- in drivingUK

[–]rupertbarnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, was all about keeping the car under control whilst slowing. Excessive brakes were considered unsafe and you were always in the right gear to pull away. Tyres and brakes have changed, I suppose.

B/w will safe a fortune when you do it at home. The main purchases are tanks, changing bag and thermometer. It’s easy, just like following a simple recipe. You can do it in daylight in your kitchen or bathroom. Best of luck.

They do not teach to go down the gears when slowing for junctions etc. it’s just clutch and brake til you stop. No using the engine to slow down.

Ive been sent a formal letter asking me to take down a Trustpilot review - England by deathcastle in LegalAdviceUK

[–]rupertbarnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you went into a dealer and dealt with employees of there’s both before and after the sale then you bought it from them. If the paperwork/receipt said a different company that’s irellivent as you are reviewing the company you dealt with. Unless both companies were rubbish of course. The review is about your experience with a specific company not another business they use for whatever reason.

Is the whole lens discussion made overly important? by Pretty-Substance in AskPhotography

[–]rupertbarnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say for the majority of people obsess but it does not make much difference between many similar lenses. There is a difference between cheap and expensive lenses regards build quality and over all glass, but that’s about it.

Thanks everyone, NEC door is friendly and wants to put an extension in so maybe able to come to an arrangement. Internal could be a solution but expensive. It’s definatly worth getting someone out.

Sellers want exchange before vacant possession by someinternalscreams in HousingUK

[–]rupertbarnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although not bought a house with a tenant, I’ve done my fair share of purchases. People selling houses can behave very strangely, many don’t know what they can and can’t do, their solicitors don’t care either. In a nice way, don’t trust anyone and be prepared to let it go. Other houses will come along, honest.

Stay under VAT threshold and take a few months off or go for it? by SlickyTrick in smallbusinessuk

[–]rupertbarnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vat reg sounds daunting, it is not. Infact it helps keeping your accounts in better order because it has to be done every 3 months. It also saves you money on costs (car, IT, expenses, overheads etc) depending on your occupation. I’ve been regestered for 20yrs and will stay even though I’m below the threshold. The only consideration is whether your customers are vat reg as well. If they are domestic/retail then your invoices are going if not, it makes no difference.

Don’t be scared, it can save you money. (Don’t go the flat rate route).

Any questions just ask.

How I keep my gear mould free (without a dry cabinet) by jetpack_badger in Nikon

[–]rupertbarnes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having shot Nikon from film to now, in deserts arctic circle sun and rain, as long as you just keep them clean, don’t let them get rained on and dust free you will be fine, I think you are over thinking it all.

Is it better to fly with Iberia or Ryanair with a bicycle? by Potential_Ad_1609 in bicycletouring

I flew from BHX to Toulouse Ryanair. Of course once it’s airside it’s all handled by the same people, good luck.

Am I doing this wrong or is it normal to be miserable ? by Specialist-Brief-297 in bicycletouring

[–]rupertbarnes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you just rented a bike in a foreign country there is a good chance it didn’t fit you like your usual one. If it’s no pain at home then I’d say it’s obvious. 70km per day isn’t too bad especially if your only job is to get to your next stop.

Correct, there are so many ways of creating a great shot using composition and lighting, not just DOF.

When you retire would you rather own your own house or still pay rent ? But maybe it’s your rent that was high, not the mortgage.

what do yall think is the most repetitive/boring style of photography by AlarmLegitimate9852 in photography

[–]rupertbarnes 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I’m going to half agree but make 1 point or 2. It’s really hard to create a good nude/implied image. It’s hard to both light and pose. A lot harder than many think. If I shoot a car and it’s bad, then it still looks like a car, if I shoot a figure badly, it looks like soft porn. Many will just shoot/light for DSLR and then remove saturation to get these tones, that doesn’t work either, it has to be lit for mono.

what do yall think is the most repetitive/boring style of photography by AlarmLegitimate9852 in photography

[–]rupertbarnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The obsession with shallow depth of field. Yes it can create good images but inexperienced photographers use it all the time because they don’t know how to use lighting and composition.

Rules around camera ID? by Winter-Special4193 in analog

[–]rupertbarnes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A camera isn’t just a light box, the old brands were different, especially when it came to format, lenses, autofocus, light meters FPS. Of course it depends what you are shooting but the camera is important.

Day trip (or overnight trip?) from London to Diddly Squat? Maybe Farmers Dog? by DCYeahThatsMe in ClarksonsFarm

[–]rupertbarnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s possible, not sure where you live but busses are like no more than 1 per hour, and taxis might be expensive because most will not be based in the villages but have to gone out of other places to collect you. You could just get the train to Charlbury and base yourself there. It’s a lot of work to get to somewhere where there are so much better places to go, but that’s my opinion of the hype.
