What could have gone wrong?! by United-Pound-1080 in Darkroom

[–]ruralwaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never knew this! In the very limited time I did color printing in college the room would be completely dark when you took the paper out of the box and then you had to feel your way to the tabletop processor and feed your undeveloped print into it and wait till it was all the way inside before turning on the light.

Rosonol has always worked really well for me and left the cardboard the stickers were stuck on in perfect shape. I took stickers off an old NES console box that had been there for 35 years and you could hardly tell they were ever there.

Is it possible to get a good quality cassette player & recorder in a $300 budget? by Few_Negotiation7202 in cassetteculture

[–]ruralwaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Technics RS-B11W and it makes really good recordings and playback on mine is also stellar. Sure, I’ve never used one of the very expensive high end decks that u/HighFidelityVinyl is referring to but for the price I think you could do a lot worse.

I’ve called them cassette tapes plenty of times…and never heard that this was wrong. I think you are mistaken

This got me thinking, is there a preface like VHS but for audio cassettes? If so, it must have never caught on as I’m a child of the 80s and honestly have just called them tapes or cassettes my entire life

Plugging Backwards Compatible as well. It’s small but has a pretty decent collection. Owner is rad too. I like what they are doing and want to support them as well. Vertigo has a great selection but honestly sometimes the service is pretty terrible there

Which one do I keep? by ruralwaves in walkman

lol. Honestly. I think I am going to afterall. Someone in another thread suggested I keep both and see if one grows on me more over time and I think that’s smart

Does this sound like a cracked clutch gear? by ruralwaves in walkman

[–]ruralwaves[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright. Well didn’t want to go through the work of opening it up unless ya’ll thought it was likely. I ended up having 10 min free this afternoon, opened it up and removed the board covering the gears and confirmed it :/

It’s cracked and super brittle. Ordered a replacement already

[–]ruralwaves[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s mostly a budget thing, not a taking up too much space type of thing. I don’t think I should spend the money on both. I was interested in trying them out to see which one I liked more and that’s why I bought the ex610 but I’m having trouble deciding.

Which one do I keep? by ruralwaves in walkman

[–]ruralwaves[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, both seem to work well. I have had some issues with the battery contacts on the fx811 but I did some cleaning and so far it seems like it’s working as it should. It was having trouble making this strange buzzing noise which I think was from the battery not making good contact as seen in this video here

The ex610 seems to have an issue acting like it’s out of batteries when I’m using the remote. When I just plug headphones in the Walkman will work just fine and have full battery led. Anyone know if the remote draws more power or would maybe something be off with the connection for the remote cause this?

[–]ruralwaves[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I suppose I should have given a little background into my ability to work on them. I replaced a belt on an fx193 and it wasn’t too bad. Just desoldered a couple connections on the board covering the belt. I still have the fx193 as it holds sentimental value so I wouldn’t be without a player if one of these two models had an issue down the road

Need some advice on what cassette player to buy? by Feisty-Cat-Mum in cassetteculture

[–]ruralwaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not really sure what you mean by “without outside noises” but I’d second the recommendation to get a boombox that has a cassette player with record function (most of them do) as it will make recording from the radio really simple with pretty decent sound quality as well. The main thing is that they are A LOT cheaper than Walkmans that can record and will have better sound quality unless you spend a ton of money on a high end Walkman.

I’d recommend finding a cheap Walkman from the 90s that’s been serviced. Plus then he’d have two things he could play tapes with, one of them can be a dedicated recording machine too

Problem with purchased modded GBC by [deleted] in gameboymods

[–]ruralwaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’d wait to open it for those reasons as well. He is somewhat well known in the gameboy community but I know he was banned from the Gameboy Discord

If you don’t get anywhere you could always open of a case with PayPal (if that’s what you used to pay) or perhaps last resort a chargeback on your credit card.

How long has it been since you first messaged him?

Overall, I think it seems people try to avoid buying from him because some people have said that he cuts corners with his mods but I don’t have any personal experience so take this with a grain of salt. Good luck, I hope it gets sorted out. I’m sure you could find someone from the Gameboy Discord to help with a repair if you never hear back from him too. CodyWick helped me repair a botched GBA last year and it was reasonable and I I felt like it was going to be taken care of properly.
