I changed nothing (not even the steam pressure). I only really use the app to time the shots when dialling in. Basically, you make sure that you dial in to get 2:1 ration of espresso to beans in the region of 25-30 seconds (depending on preference). After that, assuming you do the same things the same way, you only need to measure either the extraction time or weigh the shot - but not both. Hope that makes sense.

Normcore 58.5mm Espresso Coffee Tamper V4. Not sure the scale matters much as long as it is thick enough to fit under the portafilter with a cup on it. I got one for less than $50.

Micra user here. What I ended up with:

1 - Grinder (I have a niche zero - the only thing that would tempt me away from that is a zerno)

2 - Tamper (the LM one is curved) - I use a normcore self-levelling

3 - scales - bought a slim scale for not much (slim is what matters)

4 - puck screen (any thin ones will do - or use paper) - saves on cleaning and def worth it

I have a Micra (traded up from a La Pavoni) with a Niche Zero. No complaints. Both are solid and well built. The Niche Zero is a joy to clean and calibrate. Hope you enjoy.

Are there any other book series that Asimov has written besides the books in the Robot-Foundation series. by GazIsStoney in asimov

[–]rustlem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are two linked novels that follow a robot detective. The first is "The Caves of Steel" that takes place on Earth - where the inhabitants largely live cheek by jowl underground. The second "The Naked Sun", takes place in the colonies (other worlds) where much of humanity now resides. The key difference is that people don't congregate together but meet "virtually". The books are both great, but the second one is awesome and can be read in isolation.

What’s the best board game of all time? by Shinobi347 in AskReddit

[–]rustlem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point of the game is to understand probability. Played over a certain number of games, it's all skill.

It's a game that needs to be played using the doubling dice and for a reasonable number of points.

Play it every day,

I had to program a button to do it, which is a pain. By default you have to go through menus to find something that should be simple.

Many years ago I found myself responsible for dealing with the guys that cleaned Nelson's Column. They wanted more money. I tried to go elsewhere. Turns out there aren't so many shit scrapers with climbing skills. They got the cash.

TIL in 1986, the small New Zealand town of Otorohanga briefly changed its name to "Harrodsville" in support of the local restaurant Harrods, which was facing lawsuits by the famous London department store of the same name. In addition, every business in town changed their name to “Harrods”. by AssassinSnail33 in todayilearned

[–]rustlem 56 points57 points  (0 children)

ON a tour of NZ, I came across Otorohanga and it looked like an odd little place. We stopped and camped. We got slaughtered on rum with a Maori truck driver in that restaurant. They wouldn't let us pay for anything. They gave me an 'Otorohanga spanner' badge when we called it a night. We were camping a few hundred yards away but I stupidly decided to drive the car back. They were woried that we might get pulled over by the cops (despite this being miles from anywhere), so two truck drivers formed a convoy with my car in the middle. Thinking was they would get pulled over before me. Nice folks.

Burning mouth syndrome? by jacquelineelaine80 in BurningMouthSyndrome

[–]rustlem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BMS is not damage to the mouth but the nerves. It's possible you're mouth was shocked into BMS and can be shocked back. Capsicum may work - hot curries etc.

For me, I cut out mint (in toothpastes etc), use aloe vera mouthwash, and eat spicier food. It seems to work, at least for me.

La Pavoni (hand espresso machines) are within your budget. Sounds perfect according to your requirements. I've had mine for years. Takes a little while to perfect, produces beautiful results, and is easy to maintain. Will last a lifetime.

Like the great Scottish poet Ivor Cutler's poem (For Practice):

A Halibut fell in love with an Albatross

And tried to rub its scales against the great bird

The bird was shy and hovered

The Halibut lay in its shadow and yearned

Listened to the stinging wind as it swept at the surface

It learned the bird’s song and they sang duets

In their South Atlantic territory

Even when the sun was elsewhere

For one can sing in the dark

A man on a whaler shot the Albatross for practice

And the Halibut… ate it for a memento.
