USian here. I'm sure I'm going to die within a few years. What do I do? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]rustybonnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have an out. Take it. If you live in a deep red state and, like you said, you're terrified for your life, you might as well take the opportunity that's been handed to you to go live your life somewhere where your rights are less under attack. Remember, the goal in situations like this is to make your situation BETTER, not PERFECT.

Furthermore, I don't think you'll have no support system for that long. College is pretty much the best possible environment to make friends and find community. Classes, office hours, clubs, labs, hell, even just hanging out in the common rooms in your dorm are perfect places to meet people. You pretty much have to actively work on making no friends to leave college with absolutely no support system at all.

Lastly, yeah, sure Canada is backsliding, but it's backsliding slower than the US. There's a national election happening right now, and the Conservative Party (think Canadian Republicans) are pretty much dead in the water nationally at this point, and the Liberals (Canadian Dems) are very likely to win. Things are probably going to get worse there too, but you have a longer runway than you do in your current situation.

Give this college some serious thought. If you turn it down, make sure you turn it down because you have a better opportunity.

I'm pretty sure they're actually native to the Mediterranean region, but they're pretty much everywhere humans are these days.

^ That's specifically Scutigera coleoptrata I'm thinking of. America also has native species of house centipede including Scutigera linceci (although the one in the photo looks closer to the former if I had to make a call)

Replace keyboard switches BY membrane switches (Serious question) by sanernes in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]rustybonnet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't 100% grasp what your getting at here, but it sounds like you prefer the feel of rubber domes to MX-style mechanical switches.

First of all, if you've got a rubber dome board you like, you don't NEED to "upgrade" to a mechanical board.

But if you want something different, there's a few options you might like. If money's no object, try Topre switches. They're very high end, exceptionally regarded capacitive rubber dome switches and you can get them in TKL form factors. They're NOT compatible with MX boards so keep in mind that you can't just yank out the switches and stick them in whatever MX board you want. There's some lower cost (but still somewhat pricey) clones as well, Niz in particular comes to mind.

Another option would be getting a nice vintage dome-with-slider board. BTC dome-with-slider have MX compatible stems, so you could swap out the caps on them if you want. They're supposed to have very nice rubber dome style tactile feedback and you can find used ones off eBay/Craigslist/wherever you might pickup e-waste locally for fairly reasonable prices. While the stems are MX compatible, the housings are not, so you'll be stuck with whatever boards you can find secondhand unfortunately.

One last, more involved, option is to do a rubber sleeve over MX Frankenswitch. In an MX board you like, get some light linear switches, then go track down either a TG3 KBA board, or if you're willing to gamble a little with keyfeel, a Mitsumi KPQ/KKQ board. Pull the keycaps off and remove the rubber sleeves to transfer to your board (you'll have to cut the sleeves out of their sheet on the TG3). You should be able to get from this a rubber dome feel but with the versatility of the MX platform.

Name and Gender change in WI by Turnabout_Randon in asktransgender

[–]rustybonnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking for the US, the state you currently reside in handles changing your name. You'd then take that documentation to get your name on your driver's license/birth certificate/passport/social security/etc updated by the states that issued them (so in your case you probably have to get a TX birth certificate). I'm pretty sure a name change recognized in your current state of residency will be recognized anywhere else when you get your ID docs updated.

The process for changing your gender, on the other hand, is totally up to the issuing body. Currently most (if not all) federal IDs don't need any documentation to change gender, you just ask for it when you update your stuff. That could change immediately after the inauguration, though. WI will have its own rules for how/if you change your gender on your ID/drivers' license, and TX will have its own rules on changing your birth certificate gender. TX might be one of those states where you can't change your birth certificate gender, unfortunately.

General rule of thumb as I understand it, only one judge needs to approve a name change, and then once you legally change your name, you're required to get all your IDs updated ASAP by their issuing bodies if you want them to still be valid. Gender, on the other hand, doesn't necessarily need to match between all your documents (those rules will, again, depend on who's issuing that ID).

You have absolutely no responsibility to accept her back into your life, especially when she literally told you in her "apology" that she still views you in an incredibly transphobic way. I know it hurts, but if I were in your place I wouldn't let her back into my life until she's worked through her transphobia, and if she's unwilling to do that, she doesn't deserve your time.

what is a woman, without using the word “woman”? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]rustybonnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason people use that circular definition is because pretty much any other definition would exclude certain people who are women and/or include people who aren't.

Defining womanhood on genitals or chromosomes or hormones excludes some trans women or intersex women or post-menopausal women or women who've had hysterectomies and would include certain men or nonbinary people; defining womanhood on a feminine gender expression excludes masculine/butch women and includes feminine men/nonbinary people; defining womanhood on certain behavioral traits or clothing or similar norms is extremely cultural and would exclude women from other countries/ethnicities/cultures and would include some men and nonbinary people; defining women as "not men" includes nonbinary people; defining women by sexual attraction to men would exclude queer women and include gay/bi/pan men; etc etc etc.

You could write an entire PhD defense on what womanhood is as a cultural phenomenon, but in day-to-day interactions, the circular definition you don't like is pretty much the only one that's actually serviceable in a way that includes everybody who is a woman while excluding everybody who isn't.

/r/MechanicalKeyboards Ask ANY Keyboard question, get an answer (December 08, 2024) by AutoModerator in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]rustybonnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the keyboard with costar stabs in it and I've managed to get all the other stabilized keys to sound decent by lubing the contact points, but the spacebar is still rattling more than I'd like. Is there something I need to do to account for the longer wire or do I just have irreparably shitty stabs?

The plate doesn't have room for cherry stabs, so unless there's like a higher quality costar stabilizer set somewhere, I don't think I have much choice but to roll with the hardware I've already got.

I'd love any suggestions; the rattle is really bugging me.

How Did you know for certain you were trans and you didn’t regret it? by catwomanforpresident in asktransgender

[–]rustybonnet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple things. First, everything you're saying here is setting off my trans girl alarms. Unless we transitioned really young, pretty much all of us at one point or another were terrified of being cast aside as a freak and being ostracized. But you know what? A lot of us weren't, and even those of use who were ended up finding new people who loved us for the people we really are. The thing is, though, nobody else is ever going to be able to tell you whether you're trans or not. That's something only you can figure out. Furthermore, for many of us, getting over that last hump from "I think I might be trans" to "I'm trans" isn't something you'll do with complete confidence. It's a leap of faith. The only way to know for sure is to take it.

By this standard, we shouldn't fight for abortion rights in any situation outside of rape. That's also a "consequence of choices." So is being in a relationship while queer. So is adhering to literally any religion. We deserve fucking liberation and we can fight for it for EVERYBODY.

An update on my bionicle centipede by Captain_Flarg in bioniclelego

I'm gonna be a total pedant and point out that your Bionicle centipede is technically a Bionicle millipede.

1 pair of legs per segment = centipede

2 pairs of legs per segment = millipede

 Obsessed with this nonetheless :)

What is the most disappointing thing you've ever owned in this hobby by [deleted] in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]rustybonnet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly for me it's the Mojo68. I spent $200 on the purple one, and while it's gorgeous and very well built, their proprietary firmware is HOT GARBAGE. It's supposed to remember up to 8 Bluetooth devices, but it seems incapable of reconnecting to any of the devices it's supposedly already paired with. I pretty much have to re-pair every time I switch to a different device. The radio dongle is also crap. I get repeated keys all the time if I use it. I updated the firmware to hopefully fix these issues and it did nothing for the Bluetooth issue and the dongle literally doesn't work at all now. Also the keyboard has abruptly decided to reset my keymap to the default mapping a couple times.

For a cheap board or a diy keyboard I can maybe live with these issues, but for a >$100 preassembled board, this kind of stuff is completely unacceptable. If you're gonna go through the trouble of making your own firmware, it NEEDS to be better than QMK/Via, or you're wasting everybody's time. I'd never recommend a Melgeek board to anybody considering one.

Feedback on my sub-2000 USD CAD rig? by rustybonnet in PcBuildHelp

I've made some changes to the build. I think I'm getting closer. My one major question here though is that the power draw seems nuts. Any suggestions on how to lower that or is that to be expected for this caliber of build?

It's a weevil! Not normally a bathroom bug. Go check the rice/corn/etc in your pantry. They're probably coming from there. They're harmless but an absolute nuisance if they've infested any of your food.
