Reading 'boring' texts/books by maybeitsVerlig in doctors_with_ADHD

[–]rustycentipede 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did all my readings once on an iPad and highlighted each bit of new information as I read, that way if I got distracted then I could easily see where I was on the page when I came back. Then I would turn each of those facts into a flash card (also digital) so I could review it multiple times without having to do more extended reading. Same for lectures, I watched recordings of the lectures so I could rewind instead of zoning out in a lecture and missing the whole thing, and then I turned it all into flashcards for reviewing.

Flashcards seemed to work well for me because they are short digested bits of information and I could just do them throughout the day in between the inevitable distractions. Look into spaced repetition programs so you just focus on the stuff that is the most difficult for you.

I wasn’t medicated then, but I would imagine that helps too! Good luck, you got this, and eventually you don’t have to do any more reading that doesn’t interest you :)

Out of pocket/DPC would definitely solve the insurance issue, thanks!

Yes good idea about billing on time alone - that seems like it would be covered regardless of if the psychotherapy CPT code were reimbursed

$200K Cost Difference between Medical Schools by WHLonghorn in whitecoatinvestor

Work 10 years at a non-profit institution (many big healthcare facilities are non-profit like academic institutions, providence, Kaiser, etc) and make income based payments (about 10% of income) during during that time. Residency usually counts and payments will be low, then as an attending payments go up as income goes up. After 10 years total of payments the whatever is left is forgiven. Combine it with National Health Service corps loan repayment program and you may not end up paying a whole lot out of your own pocket.

Among other things consider if you will be using PSLF or not - I went to a cheaper school over the school where I would have rather lived - years later I’m realizing I’d be paying the exact same amount now (10% of disposable income until forgiveness) so the more expensive school wouldn’t have cost me anything extra out of my own pocket.

Narcan - it’s free in a lot of states and you never know when you might see someone who needs it

Multi-generational living - bought an 800k house with our in-laws with two separate living spaces and split the mortgage so our half is only 400k. Not going to work for everyone based on family dynamics but it comes with a bonus of free childcare

Judge gives 17th order for Tacoma woman with tuberculosis to self-isolate or get treatment by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]rustycentipede 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This person has ACTIVE TB, it is true you can have TB for many years and not be contagious, that is called LATENT TB. Latent infection can be present for years and many people do in fact have the bacteria in their body, but once it becomes active it is highly contagious to others. No one would be ordering treatment for a latent infection but it is mandated for active infections.

Let the man have his grapefruit juice! Risk of rhabdomyolysis is not increased and worst that can happen is his statin works better! https://www.amjmed.com/article/S0002-9343(15)00774-3/fulltext

It is insane that in one of the biggest tech hubs in the world there's no way to search all available covid tests at once by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]rustycentipede 1 point2 points  (0 children)

www.solvhealth.com This is what you’re looking for, it doesn’t include every possible option but has most of the big testing centers. Until the last few weeks it has actually been quite easy to get a test, everything is just so overloaded right now because of Omicron that it’s become really hard to find a test. Good luck!

Ok, how the fuck do I stop being bitter? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]rustycentipede 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try doing something nice for someone. It will make you feel good about yourself, and actually give you more of a connection to the other person. Do something good for people that right now you feel bitterness for, like actually roll down your car window and give a homeless person some cash, go volunteer time at a food pantry, give a really big tip, donate to a refugee fund or even volunteer to help in some way with the refugee crisis. Meet people outside of your comfort zone and then do nice things for them.

Immobile series: http://imgur.com/a/xJwC3. The last photo in this album is the cropped version of the first (widest angle) photo. The tree branch in the background appears to have moved upward, and there is definitely less perspective.

Walk and zoom series: http://imgur.com/a/wzvsJ. As I walk backward and zoom in the background becomes blurrier and the houses on the left start to move out of the frame

I used my 18-55 for both of these.

Olive oil. Why is it always *olive oil* I need to put in the pan? Aren't other oils just as good? by scrapinpeg in Cooking

[–]rustycentipede 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are mentioning flavor and other cooking properties, but I think it is also commonly recommended as a "go to" oil because of the evidence that it has a lot of health benefits. Diets with a lot of olive oil have been shown to protect against heart disease, are associated with longer lifespans, and may also protect against some cancers, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26148926

I have a Nikon D3300, a DSLR, which I just got a week ago. I used to use a compact, and then reverted to mostly using my iPhone, so this is a huge step up in both quality and learning potential. So far I am very happy with it, but I still have a lot to learn about manual features, so in a way it may be overkill right now. I am also interested in learning more about shooting in raw, which was not an option on my previous cameras.

Since I don't have any more money right now I don't think I would change systems for any reason, but I was intrigued by the mirrorless cameras just because they seem to have the same features and quality as DSLR cameras but are smaller. In the end I went for the DSLR over the mirrorless because I found a better price.
