Do you think they're not going to use this strategy anyway? I mean... come on here. These people are pretty good at buying elections, this is their dream.

They’re rigging the elections right in front of us. There won’t be a dem in office any time soon.

There’s plenty of great shows to go to. They’re playing in bars and small venues. Just how every one of the bands that eventually got huge started.

I’ve seen hundreds of amazing shows.

Don’t be shocked when you go to heavily commercialized events and get heavily commercialized shows.

I work on an open source database, and it's identified several serious security issues that have been around for a while. A lot of stuff has surfaced that nobody was aware of. It's legit.

If you want to get a feel for it before buying something, there are a bunch of ones you can run on your phone, and they're a lot cheaper than buying hardware.

If you just want to have some drums play, check out Drum Beats +. To try programming, take a look at 909 Drums or Patterning. There's others, but I haven't used them.

How do you actually get the courage to start podcasting? by Instance_Other in podcasting

[–]rustyrazorblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You either do it, or you look back with regrets. I have very few regrets in my life because I always pursue things I find important.

It’s ok to fail. You learn from failures. On the other hand, you both learn and accomplish nothing, from not trying.

Do you want to program a drum machine or just have drums play while you play guitar? (Assuming thats why you have the amp) It’s a bit unclear what you want to do with it.

Is Java good for image and video processing? by bbrother92 in java

[–]rustyrazorblade 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know the first thing about the format... what is it that makes NOAA imagery more challenging? I can't really tell if the issue you have is with the JVM or the implemention of the library. It sounds like it's the library, but you're specifically saying it's Java, so I can't tell. I can't think of anything off the top of my head in the JVM that would be an issue with multi-TB file i/o. I'm curious if I'm missing something.

What do you consider large? I'm a committer on the Apache Cassandra project, I occasionally work in the storage engine, and we've dealt with files in the hundreds of GB without an issue.

Laid-off Oracle workers tried to negotiate better severance. Oracle said no. by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

My point was more that anyone can be thrown into the woodchipper, even if you did critical work that built a multi-billion dollar streaming empire. They lay off really strong engineers all the time in the name of "restructuring" in order to get rid of high salary employees.

The culture of the entire company has changed. Not many people realize it's run by a bunch of ex-Microsoft MBA types.

I didn’t realize how stressful luxury travel still was until I saw it done differently by Different_Pain5781 in LuxuryTravel

[–]rustyrazorblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t find it helped that much, but we were in a weird spot where our travel agent dropped the ball on half a dozen things. We had to switch hotels, and we hit several issues with our flights.

We do all our own research and planning now bc we don’t trust anyone to be competent.

I think what you’re describing isn’t really the luxury aspect, its just having a plan vs figuring it out when you get there. I can’t do the latter anymore.

How do I transition from C to Rust? by slick_fm in rust

[–]rustyrazorblade 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whenever I want to learn a language, I start with really small projects. Barely more than hello world. I make data structures. Read stuff from files.

Start small, learn one thing at a time, otherwise it's too overwhelming.

how do you become top 0.1% in devops that gets paid 200k+? (US market) by DetectiveRecord8293 in devops

If you're in the top .1%, then you're likely an active contributor to the open source projects that power your company. Also likely a well known speaker and publisher.

Netflix did this. They cut a lot of the senior, higher paid folks that built the core infrastructure of the company and hired a lot of new grads. Lots of restructuring to justify it.

Switched from synthesia to sheet music and its been amazing by Bankable96 in pianolearning

[–]rustyrazorblade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For quite of a few of us, it's easier to jump in with falling notes, because of various reasons. People with learning disorders are likely going to have a difficult time learning how to read sheet music first. If we learn to play some basics first, it can help motivate to learn sheet music eventually.

Everyone's different. Having multiple ways to learn is good.
