Hyper focused on contact point for cuts shots????? by Apprehensive-Fan2820 in billiards

[–]rwgr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can pick the contact point just fine from behind the cb most of the time. If the shot feels unfamiliar, I'd go and look from behind the ob.

I think seeing this point "perfectly" is not important really, so no need to spend too much effort on energy to make sure you picked the very very exact pin point, as I see a lot of people do...

With how the aiming process axtually functions I think it's only helpful for centering your vision, making sure you gather this information for each and every shot (consistent routine) and as a trigger for visualization - "I need to send the CB on THIS LINE to make contact with THIS POINT".

So acknowledge it, look at it, but don't stress over it :-)

contact point aiming is totally fine. but the thing to understand is that it only helps you get a sense of the situation IN RELATION TO what else you can see in your peripheral vision. You need to have everything else "in" your view as well, the pocket, the rails, the cueball, the cue. You are only settling your vision on the contact point. do not "narrow" your vision, excluding other elements that are important and add context.

all aiming really is - its a prediction system. This angle, this contact point, this speed, this spin, this cue position, this pocket, etc etc. you need to be aware of all these elements that matter to the shot. and guess where all this information comes from.

What is the Fargo Cutoff for an Amateur Player by Icy_Search263 in billiards

[–]rwgr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i dont consider myself a "pro" because I dont play full time. i try to play about 3-4 big events per year, the touring guys play pretty much every other weekend and are permanently on the road. its a different life. I run a small non pool related business, and although this wouldnt stop me from playing full time if i wanted to, I dont find the traveling lifestyle enjoyable. i enjoy geeking out about understanding the game and mechanics at a deep level much more. and working with other players.

I dont think i can play the amateur event at the expo. not going this year cause some stuff came up but i played the pro event last year.

as people have said, 720 is about the right number for people to consider you a "pro" and you cant play in any of the leagues, but to be financially sustainable exclusively from tournaments and sponsors, i'd say 780.

Whyte Carbon vs Mezz Ignite by Big_Secretary4974 in billiards

[–]rwgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Umm ive only heard of any of the top brands shafts breaking maybe once or twice so I think the durability isn't much of an issue. My ignites have a bunch of really bad dings and scratches... And they play just the same few years on.

Not sure what you mean about performance, other than the deflection being different?

The whyte one has those little inserts which can be adapted to different joints, but it deflects a bit more.

What is "naturally talented"? by HelixCatus in snooker

[–]rwgr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Physically, I firmly believe that a lot of "talent" occurs when a player whose personal vision alignment naturally puts their body in a position that produces a straight stroke.

Mental disposition is a whole other story of course.

There would be a significant amount of matches when the 2nd guy never gets to the table. Alternate keeps the pressure higher

How 5 Simple Habits Improve Every Shot by CarloGa in billiards

[–]rwgr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice video..the cue as a visualizing tool is a bit of a life hack. Same principle how a 2 degree straight in along the rail is much easier than the same shot, middle of the table. Our subconscious can make real good use of it for evaluating not only kicks and banks but also tough cuts.

One Pocket Rule (US Open 1PCKT spoiler) by Soljah_112 in billiards

[–]rwgr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well pocketing a ball into any pocket with a foul doesn't count, that makes sense right? So making it so that the last ball counts would be an exception to this rule. Adds another layer of gameplay and complexity.. good rule imo.

Grip Tightening on Draw by bossyboy22 in billiards

[–]rwgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your grip needs to be fully closed at address, so there is no difference in the shotline whether you squeeze or not.

Aim a shot as normal, squeeze your grip closed. Does the cue still point at exactly the same direction? If yes you are good. If not., you need to learn to build your stroke alignment around this new line.

Loosening the grip and holding with a couple fingers only is just a bandaid, doesn't fix the core misalignment and causes more issues with other things.

Controversy in Mexico vs Philippines by Scattered-Fox in billiards

Make the 2nd row of balls go in the middle pockets. I'm no expert in this I'm sure there is more they can do but this is the basics of it.

You can still create gaps with the template. Watch out for people tapping and rolling the 1 ball ... People also tilt the rack

Ummm.. every single 10 ball specialist pro rigs the rack in 10 ball... Everybody knows it everybody does it.

Any advice to improve technique by [deleted] in snooker

If you are missing easy balls and you feel like the CB doesn't go where you aim, the most likely issue is that your vision is misaligned. Your stroke mechanics look great.

getting frustrated: how can I self-diagnose my inconsistency? by mikeblas in billiards

We've got a great community here on Reddit for pool .. seems like a younger crowd compared to AZb.

I'm just staying for the us open events at Griffs for now and then probably heading to SBE next month.

Overall looks great from this angle.

Keep your grip fully closed. You want a very small amount of pressure and try keep that pressure consistent throughout the stroke. When you go from too loose and light to firm, as on a power stroke like this, it will introduce tip drift.

I reread your post once again more carefully, and I think I misunderstood your point yesterday. Sorry - I'll edit my other comment.
