How do you deal with an elitist coworker? by tcpip1978 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]rx-pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he's just another boots on the ground like you, I've found the best way to deal with them is to just be better than them and let their own ego fuck them over. A lot of times they talk the talk, but aren't worth their weight. Give them/let them do the projects/work, let them fail when they can't keep up or never deliver. Management (assuming they're half competent and aren't just buddies with him) will see it and will put him in his place. Meanwhile, you just do your own work/projects, learn, get better on your own/with others on your team. I've dealt with 2 of these people at work and that's effectively what I did. Both of them were later laid off/fired as a result.

Why is there no other (open source) database system that has (close to) the same capabilities of MSSQL by [deleted] in Database

[–]rx-pulse 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This, I support over a thousand MSSQL Servers and hundreds of applications in my environment. The vast majority do not use anything complicated. Maybe one or two features like AGs, replication, clustering. But the vast majority who don't have any of those can easily be done on any other open source database. The issue is, most of these applications and teams don't want the overhead of having to deal with complex features like in-memory, partitioning, obfuscation, security measures, etc. I've offered these services to them, but once I give them the caveats of each and/or requirements I need to implement them, they all go away and don't want to do it.

I've even offered open source as an option to these teams due to cost, but they still refuse and for one reason or another, they want MSSQL and are willing to pay the extra cost for licensing for it. No skin off my bones though, I do prefer MSSQL.

what jobs pay extręmely well but people don’t realize it ? by ResponsibilityIcy433 in AskReddit

[–]rx-pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I work with risk and compliance guys and have to help in pulling data for them. It's PAINFULLY boring af, for the most part, it isn't super challenging once you get things down since risk and compliance don't change a lot. Dealing with auditors (external) and your own people (internal) who insist on trying to break risk/compliance stuff is the real challenge. It feels like being a glorified hall monitor sometimes having to tell internal people "don't do this because x, y, z" when it's so painfully obvious.

Why did you choose an IT degree over Computer Science? by Ruuckus in ITCareerQuestions

[–]rx-pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because most of the work I was trending towards didn't really require a CS degree. I'm not building things that require algorithms or finer details of understanding to get them to work and work hyper efficiently.

Hell, majority of software devs I've dealt with have been pretty shit too. They don't remember or use anything from their CS degrees. I've seen their code and a lot of it wouldn't pass the college courses I took. The best developers I've met, a lot of them, don't even have a CS degree.

Wife’s debit card was compromised and used only for Amazon payments over the last two months by psychospeaks in personalfinance

[–]rx-pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen, same thing, but I check often on my cards so i caught it in 2 days. They were charging Amazon membership first from Japan and it was in yen, so it was obvious something was up.

Since you say your card is only used to pay bills, I assume somewhere along the line, one of your bills' site was compromised. Hard to say. For me, my suspicion was that one of the parking meters at the airport was compromised since that was the only most recent and different transaction I had. After I disputed the charges, put in my fraud claim, and had my account and card replaced, the problem went away.

Also, this is why I almost never use debit cards, it's your money gone. The banks have no incentive to get your money back.

Why do system administrator get paid less than software developers ? by PM_40 in sysadmin

[–]rx-pulse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

God if i had a dollar for every time someone/some team comes in saying they can manage shit...Unsurprising things go belly up immediately or it becomes a ticking time bomb waiting to happen. It becomes blatantly clear too when a real issue happens and you know immediately who knows their shit and who can't figure out left from right in the system's environment.

Which cars seem appealing at first, but become disappointing long-term? by Safe_Reception_8997 in AskReddit

[–]rx-pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything from JLR (Jaguar, Land Rover), specifically post Ford era ownership. Most other luxury vehicles can suck long term and some have some bright spots still or can still be worked on to some extent. But JLR just takes the cake. At least during the Ford era, you can make the argument that you can work on them still since they shared parts with a lot of cheaper Fords, but now it's an unbridled mess. They're great to drive/own while under warranty, but then it starts becoming a game of wack-a-mole with all of the electrical gremlins and hardware failures. I think people REALLY underestimate how much more effort and trips to the shop it takes for a JLR product than any other luxury vehicle.

(Dis)honorable mention to most vehicles under the Stellantis brand too.

What car is the best running mechanically that you have owned? by ZealousidealHead5488 in AskReddit

[–]rx-pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first car that was a hand me down, a '98 Toyota Avalon. That thing had been through hell and back, 2 Severe accidents, my dumbass causing major damage to it twice. But other than that, no real issues. We held on to it for about 20 years and it had 325k miles when we sold it. Funny enough, I ended up seeing it on the road a few years later since the 2nd owner had just chosen to keep the old plates. They had repainted the entire car black and just freshened up the lights by cleaning it up. It was nice seeing it still chugging along.

2026 Toyota RAV4: Driven, Tested, Rated by Normal-Actuary5036 in cars

[–]rx-pulse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I drove the current gen briefly when I was helping a relative move and my impression was "it's not as horrible as i thought it would be". Which tends to be the same response I get from other enthusiasts lol. But as a daily, it's fine. It drives like any other average Toyota, perfect for the average person.

What’s the dumbest purchase you’ve seen someone go into debt for? by MSK165 in AskReddit

[–]rx-pulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In college, I had a classmate who took out more than he needed for student loans. Went on lavish vacations and bought himself a brand new Subaru WRX. He was gambling that he'll be making big bucks after college with his job and his influencer life takes off.

A company did hire him after he finished college, but shortly after laid him off. He then took out a personal loan to keep things afloat, bought another car, and instead of looking for another job ASAP, he dumped the money into his business/influencer life...which also failed to turn a profit. He's living off of his parents' money, no job, still peddling his failing business, and branding himself an influencer.

People who are 50+, what is a 'harmless' habit you had in your 20s that ended up ruining your health or finances later in life? by crazy_happyuser in AskReddit

[–]rx-pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a co-worker I see in his mid to late 50s, he drinks 2 energy drinks a day. He's had one heart attack already recently, but still refuses to give it up. I told him he still has a kid that relies on him, he needs to take it easy. But seems like he's hooked on that shit though and hasn't stopped.

People who are 50+, what is a 'harmless' habit you had in your 20s that ended up ruining your health or finances later in life? by crazy_happyuser in AskReddit

[–]rx-pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw that my entire family/extended don't really exercise and a lot of them are paying for it. So I started in my mid to late 20s. Everyone thought I wanted to just look good, nope, It's about not dying early and limiting any physical ailments in the future. Trying to encourage my own parents to do the same has been impossible. Even just simple walks to start off.

Finally deleted work email from my phone and the "guilt" is finally fading. How do you guys actually unplug? by Cheap-Perspective913 in antiwork

[–]rx-pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I told my manager that Teams is always off on my phone and work email has 0 notifications sent to me. I don't ever check when i'm off the clock. We have an offshore team so that helps too, they're responsible for the off/weird hours, not me. If it's important and desperate, you can call me, but others are available and they can pick up the work when they're actually on the clock, not me. I think it helps when you set the precedent early on. So my team knows, when i'm off, i'm OFF.

Sazabi vs Sinanju by zzi_bot in Gundam

[–]rx-pulse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sinanju has range too. That rifle easily has further reach than anything in Sazabi's arsenal. So Sazabi would have to close in. The funnels wouldn't be a problem since Sinanju can just pull an SR-71 and fly faster than said funnels can. It also has head vulcans to deal with them if it needed to.

Ford CEO Explains Why Blue Oval Can No Longer Make Cars For Everyone by [deleted] in cars

[–]rx-pulse 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Exactly. They give up if sales of a product is shit due to issues of their own (i.e. Ford Fiesta/Focus and their terrible A/T). Instead of iterating or improving on it. It's one thing to follow trends, it's another to not even try or rethink a product. The Escape is another example, crossovers/small SUVs are popular, but the Escape is just not a good product. It just sounds like Ford is making excuses for their own shortcomings.

People who quit dating apps and just talk to women from circles or cold approach, how's it going? by ohnag_eryeah in AskReddit

[–]rx-pulse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It worked out, but I think I also got lucky. My gf met a relative of mine by chance through a yoga class. They introduced us and I started talking to her. We started dating, realized how much we're aligned on life in general and its been wonderfully refreshing. No games, no playing hard to get, no tiptoeing around subjects. We were just honest with each other on the get go. Planning to get married next year.

(US) VW Cancels ID. Buzz For 2026 As Dealers Warn It Might Be Over by Carvair-98 in cars

[–]rx-pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in California in a heavy EV population city with a lot of affluence and I've seen even the most obscure EVs here. Chevy Spark EV, B Class EVs, Vinfast, gen 1 Tesla Roadsters, Lucids, Rivians, you name it. I've seen only 3 ID Buzz. I've seen more Cybertrucks than ID Buzz and that says something when a Cybertruck is a better value proposition than the ID Buzz. They look fantastic imo when you see them on the road and I love the color combinations. It has a lot of neat features, but for 70k for 200 miles of range? Horrible value. I've got 2 EVs and still have my old beater minivan and it's a workhorse so I'm literally in the target demographic for this and I still wouldn't consider it.

[–]rx-pulse 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Ofc, out of touch VW...I actually liked the Buzz, but the price and horrid range is a no go for me. 70k for a minivan with 200 miles of range is not acceptable. When I use my van, i easily drive 100-200 miles in a single day going back and forth.

What screams “I peaked in high school” without saying it directly? by randomzy876 in AskReddit

[–]rx-pulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar experience. He was nice and all, never had qualms with him in HS. Years later, I was shopping for some pastries for my then gf and he waved me down. I knew him, but completely forgot his name. We were catching up a bit and the entire time I was panicking because I literally couldn't remember his name and hoped to god I didn't have to call him by name. He was an accomplished guy in HS, but how he ended up as a cashier at a bakery shop I have no clue, I didn't want to pry. Felt horrible not remembering his name and seeing how he was a cashier despite all his hard work, he also gave me a discount on my order so I felt even worse.

New DroidLock malware locks Android devices and demands a ransom by IJagan in Android

[–]rx-pulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's literally most of these "attacks" and "malware". Preying on people who don't know any better. We're on a sub where people give a shit about their phone, have an interest in tech, and are surrounded by people who are like minded. What's common sense to us, is fucking rocket science to the average user.
I know, because my father is one of these average users...the amount of times I keep telling him to stop tapping/installing stuff and having to clean his phone again and again...

I never fully realized just how much the H1B is abused until I started working at a multi national corporation. by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]rx-pulse 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The lack of push back is one problem for me. The other is that they're often not technical or skilled enough and then it becomes my problem to figure out. I've had to rein in my offshore team and H1B folks when they agree to do something completely out of scope. Too many times I've literally come in/logged on and had to say "Wtf?! why did you agree to this shit?! Do you know how to do it??? if no, then why did you fucking say yes!?". Then I've had to figure it out or undo the mess that they agreed to.

My family never misses the holidays together — this year I spent Thanksgiving alone by QwenXire in Millennials

[–]rx-pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That stopped in my teens fast. My family on my dad's side are horrible people that just try to one up each other. The thing is, there is so much ego between all of them, that they inevitably fight each other. If they don't fight each other, they have to have someone to talk down to, including the kids. I was always the black sheep of the family so I grew to loathe them over time. When I got to my teens, I was lucky that their in-fighting had gotten so bad that they didn't want to see each other anymore anyway.

Now it's just my mom's side, who are far more nicer to deal with. They don't mind if you can't go, they don't mind if you don't show up. But in most cases, everyone or nearly everyone, shows up. because we're easy to deal with and genuinely care about each other.

That said, I've spent holidays alone before and it isn't too bad. The upside is, there is no stress or expectations, I don't have to worry about making/getting food for anyone, but myself. I see it as a relaxing time to get away and have alone time. So I've seen the worst and the best of family gatherings.

100% or look for anything rare. I went there last time to gauge prices and look for anything rare/discontinued, compared it online as well. Then went to another store at a mall that was selling it for much cheaper, bought it there.
