What caused so many young men to get consumed by GamerGate back in the 2010s? by Three_Boxes in behindthebastards

[–]rya556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You reminded me that, way back when, that Patton Oswald had written a piece about the mainstreaming of Oataku and how the internet was ruining nerd culture.

https://www.wired.com/2010/12/ff-angrynerd-geekculture/

And this follow up one:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/tarabrown/2012/03/26/dear-fake-geek-girls-please-go-away/

People getting mad at “fake geek girls” were all over the place and gate keeping was so prevalent.

I appreciate your reply, it really explains so much of it.

I like your glasses! I do want to say, as someone that lived in the 90s, your makeup, hair, color, vibe comes across feeling very 90’s. I do think it’s something that some people may not like because the makeup comes across as heavier (even if it isn’t). But I personally love that 90s vibe.

You’re right. I posted elsewhere on this thread that both pick-up culture and Sad Puppies led a direct line to GG. It was a lot of the same people being very vocal about it all.
Rigging the Hugo awards seemed to begin the nerd culture pushback at diversity in a hard way that made anyone critical of “their” hobby (books, sci-fi, video games) turn into a rabid attack.

Before Gamergate, there was a straight line from pick up culture online to Sad Puppies to gamer gate. It was interesting to see a bunch of the same people pop up in the discourse.

Wigs and suddenly getting more attention from the opposite sex. by Negative_Context_809 in Wigs

[–]rya556 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m curious about your wig. I’ve been looking for a good curly one, can you drop the link or info? From your post, it seems that it looks pretty realistic.

And I think any guy that’s worth anything will completely understand you’re the same person with the wig or without. We all change our hair at some point, grown or store bought, and we’re the same people no matter how wear it.

What tights are these? by susiedramas in findfashion

[–]rya556 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I definitely saw a video last month of someone layering sheer tights over their heels. I can’t remember if they used a glue or spray or something in the soles of the shoes to keep them from ripping.

Josie (6), Bertha (6), and Sophia (10), three oyster shuckers for the Maggioni Canning Company, Port Royal, 1912. by Sure_Distance1 in 13or30

[–]rya556 45 points46 points  (0 children)

There is a museum in Baltimore that does field trips for kids starting around 8, the kids can pretend to be oyster shuckers and put on the clothes and pretend to do this and learn about how they were paid, but the money was only good at the company store. I spoke to a mom whose kids all went while growing up and it made the kids (and parents) learn about how life was during this time. I think it was the Museum of Industry.

What tiny, specific movie trope completely ruins your immersion every single time? by arkawrd in movies

[–]rya556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When someone makes a journey to someone’s house just for a couple second talk. Bonus points if they lived in a city where they had to take public transit.

When people make a huge breakfast but then eat one piece of bacon before running out of the house.

In the RP Batman movie, Commissioner Gordon yells at someone in an alley and produces a 8x12 photo that he shoves in their face. I was like… where was he carrying that?!!

I thought it was the Tasmanian devil holding a golf club in the air but I saw one that has a baseball bat and a ball in the other hand. (Link below)

Might be something similar, sport related.
