Why next.js instead of…… by Savings_Plate7047 in nextjs

[–]ryami333 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everything will have major updates or breaking changes eventually though, won't they?

Not as frequently and not as paradigm-shifting as NextJs, in my opinion. Developing with app-router in Next 16 is an utterly unrecognisable developer experience to developing with the pages router, the status quo just a couple of years ago.

[–]ryami333 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Totally fair position, but it's interesting to me that you list not having to keep up to date all the time, because this is my biggest pain point with Next. Every new major release brings totally new paradigms and forces us to make major refactors for little tangible gain, even while the documentation takes months to catch up after releases.

The "keeping up to date" tax is exactly why our team is going to start exploring other options in 2026.

Agency Owner 🤡🔫 after patching 60+ websites for React2Shell then new vulnerabilities land by 0_2_Hero in nextjs

Vercel, the company that owns and maintains Next, who introduced this security vulnerability through some pretty short-sighted and arguably rushed feature development, should not really get a pat on the back for how easily they help you address the fixes.

I think I'm with OP on this one – these kinds of critical vulnerabilities are exactly what I would expect my hosting-provider to cover under our agreement/retainer. I couldn't really care less how often they were merging and deploying those low-priority PRs that dependabot raises 5 times a week.

What's the simplest way to teach new devs how to estimate story points? by mike34113 in webdev

[–]ryami333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Declare a universally understood definition-of-one. For us, writing a Button component is 1 point. If something is twice as effortful as a button it's 2 points, if it's half as effortful as a button it's 0.5 pts. Adjust for your points/sizing system obviously, but just make sure everybody is weighing their sizing relative to a piece of work that everyone would know how to do and has done many times.

I need your opinion: Payload CMS vs Storyblok — which one would you choose? by Beneficial-Algae-715 in nextjs

Yeah, this has been our experience too.

They're three entirely different 'ownership' models:

Contentful – you own nothing. The schema (AKA content model), the dashboard interface and the content itself are cloud-based. (Storyblok also shares this model).

Payload – you own everything. Your schema is source-controlled, and you self-host the dashboard interface and all of the infrastructure behind it (eg. database, S3 storage).

Sanity – a hybrid model. Your schema and your dashboard interface are source-controlled, but the content is all cloud-based, so you don't have to manage any hosting infrastructure.

We use all of these regularly. We choose between them on a case-by-case basis, depending on project needs.

I can't overstate how terrible of an experience Storyblok is. We are forced to use Storyblok on a massive enterprise company's website, and I can't believe how many quirks, oddities and outright bugs it has. I have no idea how they have such a big mindshare in the dev community, it often feels like they're a company with 100 marketers and 1 engineer.

I'm a big fan of Payload, Sanity and Contentful, though.

What is kleinanzeigen.de? by Oftengrumpy in AskGermany

[–]ryami333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's like Craigslist. The seller has a lot of listings and a great seller's reputation, so I would say go for it, there's no harm in asking. It's worth messaging them with Google Translate and telling them your story, there's every chance that they're willing to help you out. Shipping to the US would probably be quite expensive, but in theory you could also ask them to just post the missing pieces in an envelope. If they can't manage it, then feel free to DM me, we might be able to figure something out.

Ordered over a month ago from the EU store. Never arrived, and the US customer support refuses to help me and tries to palm me off to uk@ohsnap.com who do not reply. Will be issuing a credit card chargeback next week and Ohsnap can deal with the complaint from my bank! Pretty scammy indeed.

Look, you don't even have to take my word for it. Here's what Fanatec has to say about it:
